Two people in a small car in the winter is going to zero fun. Not sure if you've tried it yet, but you're going to have a load of condensation unless you crack the windows and then it's going to get cold. They make mattresses for car backseats that kind of stay level. Never seen anything for a front seat.

You can get a Coleman fast pitch tent for less than a hundred bucks. Their insta-cabin goes for $80 on Amazon. Walmart has some Ozark Trail ones that are similar.

Pick up a couple of sleeping pads for warmth and comfort and you'll be good.

As for paying, there are loads of places to camp for free. /u/Circle_in_a_Spiral posted a good source.
