Thoughts being typed. Please ask any questions you have or feel free to discuss. Overall I'm blown away...

So I received these bad boys yesterday concurrently just as I got home to cover the Mrs. on the school run, phew. Coming from a CV1 and previously DK2. Only mobile headset experience is Daydream with Pixel XL (thoroughly unimpressed). Middle of the road IPD

Going to add some structure and more detail to this but immediate observations and comparisons:

  • Optics are stunning on both.
  • The resolution bump from CV1 is most definitely an upgrade, not a side grade.
  • The Quest is very front heavy but good adjustment gets it comfortable enough but not comfortable. This is a bit of a concern given I'd like to demo to people of all shapes and sizes, perhaps experience will help.
  • Passthrough is awesome and better on the S, though still the scale seemed off on the S, despite the obvious correction compared to Quest. I'd say at about 1.5 away from the S the scale looks accurate but closer is odd.
  • Audio on S is better than expected and will be fine for me when room isn't too noisy, obviously not as good as CV1 on the low end but for me, the option not to have anything on the ears is much more comfortable and makes it easier for glasses wearers to get on and off. Quest was similar but didn't sound as good as S to me and will be making use of over-ears when taking out and about.
  • Speaking of glasses, it's a none issue for S and with Quest I didn't even use the spacer. My glasses are big but sit quite high up my bridge. No need for contact lenses anymore and personally won't be getting prescription lenses as makes it harder to share.
  • Some Quest games /OS still have some kinks to iron out. Rec Room I couldn't log in and they've acknowledged an issue. Additionally I found other titles crashed back to "home" when my battery was getting low. This may or may not be related to the battery state at the time.
  • Vader Immortal - omg, wow. I just can't, wouldn't even say I'm a massive Star Wars fan but wow. Everyone needs to pick this up even though it's under an hour. Cannot believe what they've managed to do with a Snapdragon 835, the presentation is amazing and despite being a bit of a VR veteran now, seeing the Star Wars world "blown up" to scale really took me back to that initial feeling of VR/Mario 64.
  • As mention in Tested's review of S, there is no longer a tilt option, which I really miss as find it allows you to get the sweet spot more easily, which in turn allows better comfort options. Despite the bigger sweet spot I'm stuggling to get it along with the comfort as easily as CV1, but expect some time I'll find the right fit.
  • The cable on S is heavier I think. As you can have your "front facing" position point anywhere, naturally I set it up to have the cable behind me. I decided to ran the cable through the rear velcro on headset strap to have the cable come out behind the headset instead of west-south-west. However due to the weight of the cable that wasn't the way to go. Need to take it back to how it was and compare.
  • Rift S extensions - I managed to use passive 2m (perhaps 6ft) USB and Display Port extensions without issue. I like to route through my TV cabinet and it offers a bit of extra length, safety to the PC if snagging and can even go into the dinning room now too as no need for sensors and cables a bit longer!   • The convenience of Quest cannot be underestimated. You are immediately in VR when you put it on and can take it anywhere, even whilst wearing it!
  • Tracking - So, starting with the S, imho it is better than CV1. Now this is very subjective but fundamentally I would not go back. Warning WOT:For comparison, I had/have very wide roomscale with 4 sensors (1 which I scarcely used as wasn't cabled managed and made little difference) it was incredibly neat and no wires could be seen, each mounted in top 4 corners of room'ish. I had to purchase the expensive 4 separate host controller per port USB card to get stable sensors, but once eventually finding the right combination was excellent. So for a new user this is asking a lot, but setting all that aside as I had it set up perfectly, I would still get the odd dead spot and if looking closely there was the occasional very slight wobble, but not something that would effect game play. Fast forward to S and the hand tracking is perfect, I cannot see any wobbles at all and the are no dead spots anywhere in terms of where you go. Obviously the cameras can only cover so much FOV but I did not find that a problem once during play and the only area where it clearly could be a problem is hand over hand close up to the headset (e.g. how I would hold a gun in Onward), however I found I was able to just extend this an inch or two naturally and comparing tracking overall I would say inside out on S is a clear improvement and definitely the future. The Quest is very similar to the Rift but clearly doesn't have as big a FOV and when I purposely broke out of the FOV, it's not quite as smooth as S (couldn't really notice at all on S), but did not find this a problem in games.
  • Quest outdoors - Not sure how that chap in the field managed it. The optical tracking is absolutely fine, headset tracks flawlessly, however the IR tracking of the controllers was a no go for me when outside, even in shade. Will try some other settings but not optimistic.

    This is getting a big long, will add some other stuff and tidy up later, but please post any questions you might have.

    There are a number of things that could be better, e.g. I'm not convinced the comfort is better on the S, but I couldn't be happier with my purchases, they are amazing devices.

    I was really not sure whether I would get the Quest and actually put an order in almost a week later than S (I have a 1080TI in my PC after-all) and whilst I will continue to use the Rift S and look forward to the amazing content you can only get on Rift, I can see myself using the Quest far more regularly due to the convenience.

I successfully extended 6 ft using this DP cable. No issues so far. Also used a long, maybe 15 ft active USB 3.0 cable I already had but I am going to try replacing it with a 6 ft cable as well. Not a big extension but I don't need much in my play space and it's cheap.

The cable is definitely shorter than on the Vive.

Using Vive linkbox to fix USB issue which gives a tiny extension, and a DP extension cable myself.

Also tried USB-C -> 3.5mm adapter for audio with my first HMD that had a busted audio jack on day1, which worked fine as well (although it keeps slapping you in the face since it's nice and centered on the bottom.)

I have to extend mine over 1.8m in two places (seated and roomscale 1080ti setups). The USB extension will help you, not tried that far with DisplayPort
