Ah I always underestimate hair thickness XD I also have trouble with ends when I use the wand to curl my hair cause I'm scared of burning my fingers. My strategy is either to get someone else to do it or I have these hot curlers that have worked really well for the past couple years. You have the same potential problem off too much hair in one of them, but you're far less likely to have straight ends. I definitely prefer them, especially when I'm doing my own hair. They save a lot of time cause I can be doing something else while they're curling.
You'll want to give them plenty of time to warm up (the light says 15 minutes, but I usually let them go for a half hour) and then I leave them in while I do the rest of my morning routine (45 mins - 60 mins, but it doesn't hurt to go longer) a few pins and hairspray and I'm good! Also, they keep your hair out of the way while you do everything else.
There is also the problem of having different sized curls. You'll either have to be patient and do a few rounds of them or pepper the odd sized ones through out your hair. For example, I use the large pink ones on the back of my head. bottom layer since there's a lot of other hair to help hide the fact that they're not as tight and I use the tiny white ones above my ears to get a nice tight curl. That's the chunk of hair I fiddle with the most, so I give it a little extra curl at the beginning of the day.
