4TB is the best value per terabyte when I looked at prices last week

Edit: I was wrong, I was thinking about the Seagate BarraCuda!

u/skitthecrit · 9 pointsr/buildapcsales

I wish they would put the actual speed of the drive in an easy to see spot, I like to know. It's apparently ~5900 RPM, according to Amazon. So not 7200, as a lot of HDDs are these days.

u/zardoz_speaks_to_you · 5 pointsr/videography

The 4tb Seagate is $99 on Amazon, and a 4tb WD Blue is $117. These are US prices - I can't speak for other countries.

u/azlad · 5 pointsr/btc

You are a dumbass then and incapable of forward thought. Not a surprise.

4 TB of storage today : https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-ST4000DM005/dp/B01LNJBA50/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1499367644&sr=1-3&keywords=4+TB+HDD

100 bucks.

Maybe we need 8TB?

$250, What the fuck are you talking about man? Maybe you haven't had time to brush up on hardware while you've had your head in the sand.

>Current payment processing centers in the US store PETABYTES of data.

And your panties are in a bunch over 400 GB in 1.5 years you absolute dickhead. Not to mention an actual fast sync node, which has full capabilities, is only 25 GB from my understanding.

Worst case scenario, and technology suddenly stops scaling. We're still fine for at least 2-3 years on storage before it becomes a concern and thats if we somehow start generating 2 TB a year.

Your username really applies here. You don't have a fucking clue.

But sure, I don't know what I'm talking about. You're the one that is spreading baseless FUD right now about a fucking non-issue. Storage space is fucking cheap and it will continue to get cheaper with advances in technology. You must have had your fucking head in the sand for the past 15 years. Someone in DevOps should know how fucking cheap data storage is right now and continues to get. But you don't, so you're either terrible at your job or you are full of shit. Take a pick, asshole.

There is plenty of shit to be concerned about in the crypto space. This isn't one of the things.

This was from amazon uk, no third-party.

u/TylerR96 · 4 pointsr/buildapcsales

It is not 7200 rpm. Micro Center has a mistake in the listing. Amazon lists it as 5900, so does newegg. It is slower than its 3tb or less counterparts, which are 7200 rpm, according to seagate themselves.

u/billcom6 · 4 pointsr/buildapc

I want to add some extra storage to my PC (for Steam games, music, videos, etc.) so I need a new HDD. I am looking for either 3TB or 4TB. Anybody have any suggestions on a reliable model that isn't crazy expensive? I was looking at this Seagate 4TB BarraCuda but the RPMs of it are listed nowhere on the internet which worries me a bit.

u/Sarillexis · 3 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

Anyone have an opinion on what to order that is more reliable?

Free shipping at Amazon.ca for orders $35+ for non-Prime members. Total incl. enviro fee & ON HST = $147.74.

MemEx shipping is $8.99, plus ON HST = $157.05.

Canada Computers has the same $8.99 shipping.

If you can pick one up at a local ME/CC location, it'd all be pretty much the same. Shipped, seems like Amazon would be best.

Trying to choose between this drive, and the Backup Plus, and this WD Blue. All are 4 TB, and will be used in my desktop (I'll remove the enclosure if I get the Backup Plus).

What do you guys suggest?

u/freakingwilly · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Twice the price, but FOUR times the storage. Seagate 4TB Barracuda.

u/BenderRodriguez14 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

4 TB HDD for $23 less, Seagate too. I have this exact one because I have emaulators for every console from NES all the way up to Wii U with thousands of games in total on them, over 1,200 movies and 100 full TV series. If you are looking for that kind of storage, this is your guy - https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-ST4000DM005/dp/B01LNJBA50/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492822223&sr=8-1&keywords=4tb+hdd

Otherwise, you can get a 7200RPM Seagate 2TB for $55 less, and a 525GB SSD for only $13 more than the 240GB one you have listed, I use this SSD and it works brilliantly. Completely silent and it will give you the space to run your most demanding games on - cuts down load times on games like Fallout 4 by a LOT - https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-ST2000DM006/dp/B01IEKG402/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1492822329&sr=1-1&keywords=2tb+hdd

Yeah, I'm always out of space. I've defiantly decided; thanks to everyone's help, to go Hdd.

u/iSwearImStrait · 2 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

So I have two links.

The first one is Canada Computers and they have it priced at $109.99.

The second link is Amazon and they have it priced at $99.99.

Sorry if these are 5400's I only had a second to look

u/thesupergeek42 · 1 pointr/DataHoarder

Litterally the first link on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LNJBA50/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500074677&sr=8-1&pi=SL75_QL70&amp

They are no WD Red, but I have had 5 of them running in a rig 24/7 for about 16 months now with no issues. The fact that they are almost half the cost of a WD Red Pro of the same capacity means (at least to me) it makes sense to run RAID6/Z2 and buy a few spares in case SHTF.

u/fzammetti · 1 pointr/writing

Once SpaceX gets the per-pound cost down a bit further! LOL

I've heard some negative things about the Red series, but it's hard to tell these days... seems like even "bad" drives are going to do the job just fine for a few years. I personally went with these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LNJBA50/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Though they were $99 just a few days ago when I bought them :( I found that 4Tb is kind of the sweet spot for cost/value. Anything more and I start to hesitate a bit (if we're talking drives alone - interestingly, prepackaged external "backup" drives seem to be cheaper for larger capacity).

I prefer Subversion to Git as a developer for sure, but also for my writing, just because I find it to be a bit simpler to deal with. Like I said, for writing there's not going to be much difference, but I still find Subversion more to my liking. Oh, and for anyone that uses either, definitely do use TortoiseSVN or TortoiseGit (assuming Windows):

https://tortoisesvn.net/
https://tortoisegit.org/

Especially with Git, you'll see online a whole lot of talk about command line, but fact is you can avoid that entirely with these. They just extend Windows Explorer, so it's a simple matter of right-clicking folders and files to work with them in either system.

Currently this is my gaming computer/plex server. I plan on upgrading my CPU in the next few months (probably Intel I9, we'll see though) and using the 3770K and accessories as the main plex server with the NAS backup in my new computer so as to keep the drives separate. Currently they are housed together which is not ideal but a backup is better than nothing. I'm fairly new to Plex (less than 1 month) but it is quite possibly the coolest thing I've found.

I'll be doubling the Plex storage from 8TB to 16TB once I upgrade in a few months and that should keep me content for a couple years (maybe).

u/patrickeg · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I have two of these and they've been awesome. They're fast for an HDD and do the trick, while not being stupidly expensive.

u/-Rivox- · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

I would say this hitachi is probably what I would recommend.

Otherwise Seagate has a wide variety of Barracuda HDDs, from 1TB to 4TB all priced fairly well.

Are you serious? I need a link to that.

We're not going to fill every 8Mb block tomorrow but even if we did.

8Mb 144blocks/day 30days / 1024 = 33.75Gb/month.

1st hit on amazon for a 4Tb HDD is £100.

4Tb*1024 / 33.75Gb = 121 months = 10 years of blockchain storage for £100.

I need a new hdd to store games that is not on my ssd and some other stuff. I'm between these two 1, 2. 3 TB for $90?

Too good to be true. The rate of DOAs suggest that the drives are probably refurbished old drives or plain duds.

Furthermore, I'd suggest you get a 4 TB drive as that's the sweet spot for capacity/performance these days.

WD 4TB 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache, 3.5-Inch Desktop Hard Disk Drive (WD4003FZEX)

Honestly, you can do a little better for cheaper. Here is what i use. It has a higher rpm and is very highly rated.

u/beartrapHH · 1 pointr/homelab

Quick question, what would be idle for ESXi? os on USB and then have 1 HDD? https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-ST4000DM005/dp/B01LNJBA50/ref=dp_ob_title_ce?th=1

Or SSD?

u/dromero313 · 1 pointr/buildapc

The SSD was just something I had lying around. It was either to use it or buy a flash drive. I was thinking about starting off with 3 of these instead. Easier to start off with for my budget.

u/1kca · 1 pointr/PleX

Building a Windows Based Plex Server but I'm not sure about drives. I intend to use Windows Storage Spaces, although this isn't set in stone. My question is about drives.
Is it better in this scenario to go for NAS drives or will "normal" HDDs work just as well?

I had my eye on 8 of these:

But if not then Toshiba N300s, WD Reds or HGST Deskstar drives

u/blaziecat1103 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Given that the cheapest 4TB internal drive I could find is the same price as the cheapest external I could find, I wouldn't bother.

u/GrayishEyes · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

hmm.... well I would personally go with this one. A cheaper option right here. This one is a 10TB that is currently on sale, and is one of the best imo. You can still of course just double up on two 5tb drives for cheaper but at a performance based cost.

u/The5thHorseman666 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Doesn't look bad but, why 2 500gb ssds instead of one 1tb. Is it significantly cheaper? Also I doubt 500gb will last very long with AAA games. I would probably ditch one of those drives and get something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LNJBA50/ref=twister_B01MUH2ARG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and then you'll never worry ever. And maybe not use a $45 case for a $1500 worth of stuff
