If it's animal fiber, you can by a no-rinse super gentle detergent like Soak or Euclean
Others have suggested using Unscented Soak in some of the other discussions I have seen on the topic.
Totally spot on the dry cleaning thing. The only items I'll ever actually have dry cleaned are my wool blazers/suits. I do a lot of handwashing, though. Soak is an awesome lazy resource if you don't mine the expense.
Love the idea of wearing a pretty apron around. Definitely going to be incorporating this when I get married!

A bit pricey, but a little goes a long way and it actually works very well. Plus, your clothes last way longer if you use this stuff instead of a washing machine. It usually takes me less time to wash something with this stuff than it does to walk the one block to the cleaners.
