Sony a7ii with kit 28-70mm lens for $998 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera-28-70mm/dp/B00PX8CNCM/

edit: B&H has the same deal but on Amazon I got 15% cashback with their CC

That's a very large budget, a lot more than you'll need to start out. So my suggestions are going to be quite a ways under-budget, so you can use that extra money for more lenses past the starting lens, accessories like a solid tripod, comfortable pack, spare batteries, etc, or you can just save the money.

If you're doing full frame mirrorless, you only have Sony as an option, and within your budget you could get an A7 II + 28-70mm lens for $1700. Their A7R II gives more resolution, but the body is over-budget, while their A7S II is much more video-focused (and even more expensive still).

If you're fine with a smaller APS-C sensor, there's a couple more options. You could snag a Fuji X-T2 + 18-55mm lens for $1900, Sony a6500 + 16-50mm lens for $1700, or Canon M5 + 15-45mm lens for $1100. Canon isn't very strong in the mirrorless segment with a more limited number of body and lens options, so they're not currently a very highly recommended body unless you have Canon DSLR lenses that you can adapt on. In addition, Fuji also makes a more "rangefinder" styled camera with their X-Pro2 camera ($1700, no lens) and X-E2S ($800 with 18-55mm lens).

Finally for ultimate size/weight, Olympus and Panasonic make Micro Four-Thirds cameras. You could get an Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II + 12-40mm PRO lens for $1900, or get the E-M5 Mark II by itself for $1000 and buy a starting lens for cheaper. Panasonic makes their own cameras as well, but in general they're more video-focused. What's nice is that since they both share the same lens mount, you can put Panasonic lenses on Olympus bodies, and vice versa.

Here's a comparison of body sizes (with an entry-level full frame DSLR for scale), and here's them with lenses attached. Keep in mind that while the bodies will be lighter, the lenses are generally where the size/weight compromises come into play for larger-sensor cameras. So even though the A7 II is smaller and lighter than the 6D2, when you put similar lenses on them those benefits largely evaporate.

In general Amazon often winds up with the same or similar prices to B&H (although I prefer shopping at B&H for a bunch of reasons). That means you can sometimes use the price trackers like camelcamelcamel to see the history. Yeah, kinda like predicting the market, but a data point. https://camelcamelcamel.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera-28-70mm/product/B00PX8CNCM?context=search

Looks like it is the same price on Amazon. I am trying to find a good beginner camera. To use on vacations, landscapes, portraits. Is there a better deal than above on a better kit?

Appreciate any insight!

Edit: I have an old Digital Rebel (DS6041) that doesn't get used any longer and I am looking for something that offers way better quality than our cell phone cameras.
