While I love the look of the first quarter moon that was so popular with you guys last weekend, there is something to be said about the brilliant majesty of the full moon. Since the craters don't have the striking shadows like in the last shot, I pulled out some of the color in the regolith. This 15,000 x 15,000px image was actually downscaled from 368 megapixels, since my computer couldn't save the master file without crashing.

This image was created using a combination of shots from 2 different cameras, one to capture color, stars, and atmospheric haze, and one to capture the surface details and textures on the Moon. The shots were then stacked and pieced together for editing. I took so many shots to average out the blurring caused by atmospheric turbulence, as well as to eliminate noise captured by the camera sensor, and to be able to extract color from an otherwise gray image. A note to astrophotography purists: I did take some creative liberties with the composition to make up for areas with bad or incomplete data due to atmospheric conditions, so I would define this image as more of a composite than a true photograph.

For more of this kind of thing- come find me on instagram @cosmic_background . I have documented all the steps I took to create this image in my stories pinned to my profile. Feel free to DM me if you ever want to chat about astronomy/astrophotography/equipment or anything else. Most of my shots are taken from my backyard in Sacramento, California.

Equipment:

Orion XT10

Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro

ZWO ASI224MC

Sony a7ii

Process:

Acquired 71 tiles with the ZWO camera, and each tile was 2000 images. I took around 2000 shots with the sony, over around 16 tiles. I also took some shots with a 300mm lens to capture some stars around the moon. All these images were stacked in autostakkert, then stitched together and adjusted in photoshop until I was happy with the composition.

Feel free to swipe this as a wallpaper. Because of the high resolution and square image, it can be cropped to fit any device and still look good, but unfortunately reddit required me to downscale the jpg quality to get it under 20MB to post, so this still isn't it's highest quality.

If you want to view/download the 33MB jpg, here is a link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZxYwPBFvda6Ju5beSJHNIkG-OmoF18-p/view?usp=sharing

If you want to break your computer with the 819MB PNG file- here you go: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18zStLHTX7Ml-brjKj591SDAdghcSlQWM/view?usp=sharing

If any kind redditors want to set up a torrent for this, I'll be eternally grateful.. my knowledge of file sharing is pretty poor.

My computer is still attempting to save the 45GB layered file, so don't ask for it. ;)

Sadly, the [$1498 Panasonic GH4] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LXB9UME/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00LXB9UME&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and [$1499 Samsung NX1] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NFDZRRA/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00NFDZRRA&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) are both above your budget limit (especially when you factor in the cost of lenses).

The two best video cameras in your price range are the [$795 Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CWLSHUK/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00CWLSHUK&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and the [$698 Panasonic GH3] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009B0WREM/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B009B0WREM&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) (these are sale prices and will probably go up after the holidays).

I own both of these cameras, and both produce awesome video images - but each has its advantages and disadvantages.

If you really want to learn cinematography - and you don't need a still camera, I recommend the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. It is the least expensive interchangeable lens camera you can buy that records to RAW or 10-bit ProRes with 13+ stops of dynamic range - straight out of the box. Like Pro cinema cameras, it sets the shutter in degrees rather than fractions of a second and has a built-in headphone jack so you can monitor your audio track (only one other interchangeable lens camera below $1000 has a built-in headphone jack - the Panasonic GH3).

With a [$10 cold shoe] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJFBUCQ/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HJFBUCQ&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20), a [$24 pistol grip w trigger] (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5575034783&toolid=10001&campid=5337235943&customid=&icep_item=221603818145&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229466&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg), a [$159 LCD viewfinder] (http://www.adorama.com/LCDVFBM.html?KBID=66297), a [$70 external battery adapter] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LPJ1FJ0/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00LPJ1FJ0&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20), a couple of [$10 batteries] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007Q9PWQ/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0007Q9PWQ&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and a [$17.50 dual battery charger] (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5575034783&toolid=10001&campid=5337235943&customid=&icep_item=321347920244&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229466&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg) [Referral Links] - you'll have the best cinema camera in its class.

Although it has a steeper learning curve than a consumer camera, and color grading in post is pretty much mandatory - this is absolutely the best filmmakers' camera in this price range.

Second choice:

If you want something that is a little easier to use, the GH3 might be a better choice. With its built-in electronic viewfinder that continues to work while you're shooting video, 1080/60p frame rate for slow motion, up to 72mbps recording and all metal splash resistant body - this is a great video/still camera for the price.

Brand new Lumix GX85 w/ 12-32 and 45-150 for $447 on Amazon.

Same price on BH too.

I already picked one of these up for the stabilized 4k 30p in a tiny package. No mic jack though, so off camera recorder is necessary.

I've taken it out for stills a couple of times and find it to be good enough for an extremely portable walk around / travel camera. Neither of the lenses included are great for low light, but I can get useable shots at 1/3rd of a second with the awesome stabilization system.

Shutter is really quiet, probably pretty good for street but I haven't tried.

G7 is also on sale for $447 on amazon, but only with the kit lens. BH has kit + 45-150 for $597 USD.

u/provideocreator · 20 pointsr/videography

The camera you need to get is the Panasonic G85 with Rode VideoMicro for $799.99. The microphone is basically free, that kit I linked is the same price as just the base camera. Or you can get a kit with SD cards and a case if you prefer that.

As long as you're in the States and not EU, that camera has an unlimited recording time. Panasonic cameras also won't overheat on you.

Other features you should know about:

  • 4K video recording

  • In body image stabilization for handheld shots

  • Interchangeable lenses with the micro four thirds system

  • Weather sealing for outdoor use

I understand you didn't have a great experience with your previous Panasonic camcorder, but this is a much higher end camera, so they're not really comparable.

Hi /u/BranFlake5 - Good question. In my view, the principal reason is price.

That said, the GH4 has a few other advantages over the A7s besides price and internal 4K:

u/kabbage123 · 13 pointsr/videography

The GH5 outperforms any camera in the sub-$2000 range despite it's small sensor.

u/Spectavi · 12 pointsr/photography

I'd suggest something like the Sony A6000. There are newer models out like the A6300 or A6500 but those start to get much pricier and there's nothing wrong with the A6000. It's APS-C so image quality is great and there is decent lens selection. You can snag one on Amazon with a 16-50 for $550 or get the 2 lens kit that also comes with the 55-210 for $695.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I8BICB2/ref=twister_B00Q7QEPY8?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

I'm sure others more familiar with that price range will chime in shortly, but that'd be my recommendation on where to start looking.

X-T2 was on Amazon July 8 2016 and released Sept 2016.

This graph shows the first drop of $100 during the holiday sales around Oct 2017. This is one year out for any discount. Discount of $500 to current price started about 2 years after it was announced.

So I would expect 1 year minimum for any discount. 2 years from announce for sizable discount.

The graph for X-T1 shows the same 2 years for serious discount timing.

u/HybridCameraRevoluti · 7 pointsr/Filmmakers

I agree with /u/indieforge. All you'll get out of the 70D is video autofocus and a 30 minute continuous recording limit. The video image quality is the same.

It is just as susceptible to moire, for example, as first generation Canon DSLRs, as seen in this side by side with the 60D:

http://vimeo.com/73429088

You might be better off saving up another $800 for a [7D Mark II] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NEWZDRG/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00NEWZDRG&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Link] (fast video autofocus, moire resistant, 1080/60p, headphone jack - 30 minutes of continuous recording)

If you want to spend less and get more for your money, you might consider switching to a [$1500 GH4 mirrorless] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I9GYG8O/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00I9GYG8O&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Link] (moire resistant - headphone jack - 4K resolution - hours of continuous recording - 1080/96p - focus peaking - no need for an external viewfinder or EVF - $31 manual adapter for your Canon EF lenses [but not EF-S]).

If you want comparable quality (or better) then stick with Sony and pick up the a7RII. Nothing else even comes close, including the Fuji.

Side by side comparisons show the Sony blows the Canon out of the water with almost no comparison between them. In fact, the Sony a7RII is presently the highest rated camera on the market (by the numbers) and it's much lighter and smaller overall than the Canon or the Nikon.

http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-A7R-II-versus-Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III___1035_795

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Full-Frame-Mirrorless-Interchangeable-ILCE7RM2/dp/B00ZDWGFR2

The Sigma Art lenses work flawlessly on the Sony so you can still execute on your plan to pick up the full line.

You may also want to consider picking up a lightweight monopod. Get a collapsible one and sling it so you don't need to carry it and when you go to shoot you'll be a lot happier for it.

Edit: I felt it mattered. I shoot with the Nikon D810 with the 14-24, 24-70, 70-200mm f2.8 Nikon lenses.

u/lordkev · 7 pointsr/photography

Don't go for that Olympus. It's a bridge camera and they generally suck. If you want to go with something new, you probably can't get much better than this within your price range - it's a compact system camera that she can upgrade later with a large lens selection.

Did a bit of googling

It's about ~$700 for this mirrorless with an OLED viewfinder. I think the res is similar (1.4mil pixels?)

Qedit: And had I spend 30 seconds longer I would've found that cameras big brother Which has an OLED viewfinder with 2.4mil pixels. It goes for about 1 grand, body only. Also this oled is about half the size of OPs iirc.

So TL;DR; You can get an OLED half the size of OP's with twice the resolution, for about ~$1000 if you don't mind buying the rest of the camera with it.

u/mkopec · 7 pointsr/photography

Around $400 brand new you can probably get like a T5 with a kit lens, 18-55mm. Pretty good camera, not the best, but for a starter camera its good, way better than any point and shoot.

I know its a gift so keeping it new is probably best, but you could get like a refurbished one from cannon site.

Those all would be pretty sweet for a beginner. She can buy some better lenses later on.

Or you could go the Sony mirror less route with a a6000. I know she wanted a cannon, but the sony a6000 is a way better camera from the get go for the money. Better processor better sensor, the ability to use tons of cheap legacy lenses of all types, wi-fi capability to sync with her phone and download pictures, even control her camera with her phone.

Shane Carruth's "Upstream Color" was shot with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 DSLR camera. A bit more expensive that most phones, and way cheaper than a professional rig, so it'd be a good compromise IMO.

The movie looks great. I'd say that the right gear, in the right hands, is very capable.

u/scottbrio · 6 pointsr/videography

I setup and produced a setup similar to this. Here's what I used on a budget to get pretty fantastic quality IMO.

Two Sony A6000 ~$600 each

Roland V-1HD video swithcher ~$974

Elgato HD60s capture card ~$160

That's ~$2,600 but you'll still need a decently spec'd laptop, camera mounts, cables, etc.

Here's a link to the podcast so you can see the quality.

I also used a Atomos Ninja Flame and a Teradek Vidiu Pro, but those are unnecesasry for the end goal. The Ninja Flame is great for back up recording and real time color-correction, but also is an extra $700 or so...

Good luck!

u/flindaman · 6 pointsr/photography

I would highly recommend looking into mirrorless cameras. They use digital viewfinders and ditch the mirror, showing you to see exactly what the camera sees. They usually have far more features than an equally priced dslr, and are much lighter.

I love my a6000, it's in your price range and you won't regret it. I had a d3200 and honestly the d3200, I outgrew quickly from learning/practise and wanted more. The increased fps, noise quality, focus points, focus speed, and extra features like focus peaking were seriously worth returning the d3200 and buying the a6000.

It's fine. DSLRs are extremely high quality and are designed for being able to do streaming if that's what you want to use it for. Lots of big streamers use them when they run out of available webcam upgrades.

Edit: Turns out it depends on the individual camera. A "Canon DSLR" which is what most people think of when they hear "DSLR", is not designed for lengthy video recording. Other DSLR cameras which use the same kind of technologies are designed with those tolerances in mind and can be used for streaming. u/sjalfurstaralfur · 6 pointsr/fujix

You can buy an x-t1 for $700 used, look at the one sold by Michael, it's $716 for essentially a brand new x-t1.

The x-t2 is gonna be $1600, and it's pretty much x-pro2 in a x-t1 body. So it's up to you, is the new model worth $900 more than the old one? Check out xt1 vs xpro2, check out the image comparison slider, because xpro2 has the same sensor as the xt2 so you'll know what you're getting.

Personally I would only get x-t2 if I got paid to shoot professional photographs and client needed some really big ass resolution photos, otherwise it's not worth it. I would also check out the x100t in terms of smaller form factor.

As for the new model stuff, spend money on travel, not gear. With $900 you could buy good hiking gear. Which photo is more interesting, 1 or 2? First was taken with an iPhone while hiking through some random norwegian mountain, 2nd is my own backyard taken with x-t1. I'd take the iphone pic over the xt1 pic anyday.

u/UnfrozenCavemanLaw · 6 pointsr/photography

Amazon's got used ones just about $400 right now and they're always a little higher than what you could get on craigslist if you're talking to the right person.

Alright, I guess I'll be "that guy" since one of us has to.

OP, those camcorders are solid. However, as a videographer, I do all of my filming on a Panasonic Lumix G7. You can get one for $600 on Amazon. If you're willing to spend a bit more, you can spring for either the newer Lumix G85 or the GH4 which can be found for around $1200.

These cameras are much more suitable for videography, here's why:

  • Interchangeable lenses. This is huge. As you continue to improve your craft, you will begin to learn about using different lenses to achieve the "look" you're aiming for. You can't change lenses on a camcorder.

  • Removable media. They uses SD cards, whereas some of those camcorders have built-in hard drives. That's fine, but if you ever find yourself "running and gunning" as I do, you will need to use multiple SD cards.

Here are some of the images you can achieve with the Lumix G7.

As far as audio goes, I use the Rode VideoMic Go. It's not too glorious, but it gets the job done.

It should also go without saying that yes, these things take monster still photos as well.

I personally edit on a Late 2016 MacBook Pro with the 2.6 GHz Intel i7 and Radeon Pro 460 graphics. You will be just fine editing on something much cheaper, like a Mac Mini or iMac.

If you're looking for something cheaper, check out Apple's Refurbished Mac store. There also is always /r/buildapc. You could build a monster editing PC for ~$800.

A full frame sensor does not guarantee good image quality, so the comparison is really based on how different cameras process the video.

The GH4's 4K recording uses 1:1 sample from the sensor, so image quality is very good with low aliasing or moire. Other cameras (especially ones with higher MP sensors) may process the video differently (e.g. pixel binning, etc.) which causes more noticeable aliasing, moire, and a loss of detail.

For example, the Canon 5D MKIII's HD output is noticeably softer than the GH4's (or GH3's, or GH2's, etc.) HD output, and the GH4's 4K IQ only widens that divide even further.

At the same time, the HD and 4K output of Sony's a7S II (another camera with a full-frame sensor) is quite good in comparison to the GH4's 4K output when downsampled to HD.

I’m gonna go against the grain here and say that there are plenty of cameras you could’ve gotten that are better for video than the t7i. Not to say that you shouldn’t have bought it, but I will say that you should’ve done your homework. Don’t be spontaneous with your purchases. I did the same thing as you and bought a cheap camera, because I just wanted anything to get myself started.

Here’s a list of cameras I would buy before buying a t7i:

Panasonic G85 - $700

Panasonic G7 w/kit lens - <$500

Sony A6300 - <$800

Used Panasonic Gh4 - $600? Maybe

If you could save a little, I’d go for the GH5 or the BMPCC 4K or the XT-1, or maybe a used Sony.

There’s so many options out there. I’m not trying to get you down or anything. I just think you can do better for the money. You can probably get great footage from the rebel. It is true that you have to have a good eye for film. But it doesn’t hurt to have some nice machines to help along the way. Good luck, friend.

Edit: I like what one of the people in the comments said. Go shoot your videos. It’s only a waste if you don’t use it.

If you're just getting into it, I would consider a camera body that costs $500 USD or less. My own personal recommendation is the Sony A6000. The body and kit lens is small and compact compared to a traditional DSLR like the Canon T6i and performs just as well. It also has the option of being able to mount vintage lenses on it due to it's smaller form factor and the lens mount being closer to the sensor. This means you can get good but cheap manual lenses from back in the day for often times $100 USD or less plus a $18 USD converter mount.

If you have any questions about this camera system (i own the A6000) or in general, please feel free to ask either through comments or pm me. Shameless plug (https://instagram.com/snappedbyandy for example photos)

Also. It sounds like you want to take a lot of landscapes, and for that you want a lens with a low focal length. Now, the kit lens that comes with cameras is nice and all, but if you want some real stunning pictures, you'll get a better quality prime wide-angle lens. "Prime" meaning the lens can't zoom and "wide-angle" meaning you have a wider field of view. Since it doesn't need to move, there's less glass needed, and the quality of the picture is better. Something that's 12mm to 20mm should do the trick. I'll link a personal recommendation below should you choose to go with the A6000.

Again, i want to emphasize to buy used if possible. Especially on lenses. You'll get severe discounts compared to buying something brand new. Typically people take good care of their lenses, and if you can meet the person before buying, a little legwork can save you a bundle of money.

I bought a Sony a6000 about a year ago and really love it. It's a really capable camera, and quite a bit smaller than your average DSLR. The lens ecosystem isn't as robust (especially on the low end) as Canon or Nikon, but you can fill gaps with adapted legacy lenses for not a lot of money. I have used an old manual focus 100mm Canon FD-mount lens for macro and it works pretty well on the a6000 with focus peaking and magnification. The a6000 is mirrorless so there is less noise than a DSLR, (you just hear the shutter not the mirror and shutter) but it doesn't have silent shooting mode like some of the nicer sonys. It sounds like if you can swing it one of the A7 series of cameras might work well, as they provide better low light performance and some have silent shooting, but I'm not sure which ones.

I know next to nothing about photography, so an opinion from me is pretty much useless. However, I can share with you what I have been using for the past 2ish years.

Sony NEX3N. Great raw quality IMO. The entire setup with the battery and stock lens comes out to 13.1oz. It's definitely a luxury, and yes, I could just take pictures with my phone, but I feel like the quality of pictures I get with the camera make it worth the weight.

This camera has fit in every hip belt pocket that I've ever owned (along with ziplock bag filled with a microfiber towel, extra battery, and extra SD card).

Check out some of its raw pics.

Am I mistakenly understanding things? How is X-T1 1/3 of the price of X-T2? Had a quick look on Amazon:

X-T1 $1300: https://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-Mirrorless-Digital-3-0-Inch-Resistant/dp/B00HYAL88W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1487417981&sr=8-3&keywords=fuji+x-t1

X-T2 $1600: https://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-X-T2-Mirrorless-Digital-Body/dp/B01I3LNMAM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487417994&sr=8-1&keywords=fuji+x-t2

So, what you're paying a measly additional $300 is a better sensor, better processor, better video, faster shutter speed, additional card slot. Among other things.

Obviously, both of the cameras are amazing, but if the prices are correct in my links, I would probably go with the X-T2 since it is a newer camera with better technologies.

I would recommend you go with the GH5 and a nikon to mft metabones speedbooster. The GH5 has a lot of features that the other cameras you mentioned just don't have that you would want for run n' gun shoots. Rugged splash/freeze/dust proof body, in body image stabilization, dual sd card slots, 4k at 60p, and more. The speedbooster would allow you to use your nikon lenses on the GH5 and get an extra stop of light. This would get you a great camera setup for roughly $2.5k which would allow you to spend the budget on any needed accessories like a monopod and since I do not see that on your list and I would think it would be a very useful addition.

I just went through this, and wound up buying new because I was uncomfortable with the refurbished / used options online.

I was looking for a factory refurb (accustomed to what Olympus does), but I eventually bought a new GX85 + both kit lenses in a bundle on Amazon for $500 instead.

It was worth the extra $100 or so to me to get a new one, get both lenses (I'm new to MFT), and be able to send it back to Amazon if something was funky.

if both pictures and photos are important to you, I would probably go with the A7iii and pair it with a good all rounder lens like the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 referral links included throughout. If you want to save a little you could buy the sony 24-70 f4 it's not as fast or sharp, but it does have a little bit extra on the wide angle.

If pics are important but not overly so i'd also look at the pansonic G9 with the new firmware it's now extremely capable for video and better stabilised than the GH5. You could then buy a couple of lenses like the 12-35 f2.8 and the 25mm f1.4 and still have a load of budget for audio/lighting

u/king_olaf_the_hairy · 3 pointsr/photography

If you're willing to look at interchangeable lens cameras, an older Micro Four Thirds system might be in budget. I can see used/refurbished Olympus E-PL1s on Amazon, with a 28-84mm equivalent zoom, for under $250. That leaves you $100 to try and track down a longer zoom lens for when you need more reach.

Not as pocketable as your compacts, especially with two lenses, but will give far better results.

u/yesimalex · 3 pointsr/photography

Canon S95 can be had for around 250 I believe.

Oly E-p1 about 200 with lens

Sony Nex 3 about 350 ish

Fuji S4200 A bit cheaper still

Hard to narrow it down any with the only known criteria being sub 500 dollars. But the above are all (in my opinion) very good cameras for the money. I'm a fan of buying used because you can get a little bit more for your money since digital stuff just depreciates like crazy.

I think for an upgraded P&S the Nikon is a solid camera as well. You can nab it used for a pretty deep discount.

u/frostickle · 3 pointsr/photography

The best bang-for-buck camera right now would be the GX1 for $499 I paid $680 for this camera, and I didn't even get a lens with it.

But since your budget is $300, the EPL1 is the way to go. It is the cheapest interchangeable lens camera on the market. (Not counting the second hand market).

I'd recommend buying the EPL1 to learn on, and saving up for lenses as you improve to the stage where you'd want to use them.

You can also try to find a used d40... but I think the EPL1 is better.
***
Also, don't be afraid to get a nice compact camera. I'm only guessing that you want to change lenses because you said "hobby". Changing lenses is nice, and lets you do interesting things. Which is what hobby people do.

If you just want to take photos, in 90% of situations you won't need to change lenses and a compact is fine.

u/snorlaxstomp · 3 pointsr/photography

I have this that I use only for my baking. It's not a DSLR but I'm happy with the pictures I've gotten: 1 & 2. Also really like being able to choose where to focus through the display. Doesn't quite fit in your pocket though.

A lot of the times I take pictures with my iPhone, so long as there is enough light they turn out ok.

u/DatAperture · 3 pointsr/photography

While still a good camera, a g16 is quite a downgrade from a DSLR because the d3200 has a much larger sensor. one of the most influential parts of a camera on the image quality is the sensor. here is a scale model of the sensors in the g16, an olympus pen, and a d3200. bigger is better!

If you want smaller than a DSLR but better than a compact, try a mirrorless camera, like the olympus pen I put in that comparison. this one in particular is quite a good deal- you'll get most of the quality of a DSLR in a package about the size of a g16. and it takes interchangeable lenses like a DSLR if you ever wanted those! it's also great for street photography because it is discreet and has good low-light lenses available. highly recommended.

u/bigboiahoy · 3 pointsr/DSLR

I have the Canon 80d and like it. It’s a good well rounder and my only complaint is the low light performance (however the lens could have something to do with this). However I will mention this is $1000. An option I see often (never have used myself) and is cheaper ($500-$900) is the Sony A6000 or the Sony A6300 (or a newer model). These are mirrorless and when you look at the viewfinder and make changes, that is what the image will look like. The A6300 might be more future proof with its 4K video if video is of interest. These would be good photo options from what I can tell (but again take that with a grain of salt since I’ve only used the 80d). If you are interested in more video vs photography another cheaper option would be the Panasonic G7 and is 4K. I cannot speak for Nikon, but they seem like good budget cameras, but may be lacking video wise. But overall the glass will make more of a difference than the camera! Any of these options would be a step up from your smartphone!

Here's some options that I like, if you don't mind buying used you'll have more room to buy more lenses and any other gear you'll like, but these are all new and all kits which includes the body and a lens.

If you want to stick with Nikon the D5600 is an amazing camera, the image quality and usability are awesome.

If your willing to spend a little more the D7100 is a great camera I can only find the body and not a kit but you could just get a lens separately.

You could also buy a Used D600 for around $600-$650 with a low shutter count if you are interested in full frame, then spend the rest on a lens.

For Canon If your on a budget I'd recommend something like the rebel 7ti

If you ask for suggestions on this sub, people are always going to suggest DSLRs. It sounds like you don't want to be carrying around a big camera if you're living in one bag. I'd suggest a compact system camera like the Olympus PEN a Sony NEX a Panasonic LX7 or a Nikon 1.

You won't get the exact same quality as a DSLR, but the size is 1/3rd that of which you'd have to carry on your back, and they will certainly take good pictures.

Enjoy Asia, and if you come out to Taiwan, send me a message!

u/thedailynathan · 3 pointsr/photography

Sony 3N kits are extremely cheap ($245 refurb'd: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00BF9MUBM/ref=dp_olp_refurbished?ie=UTF8&condition=refurbished)

They're my go-to recommendation for anyone looking to "step up". The controls are very simplistic for anyone coming from a compact camera, it's got a TINY size, and the image quality is on par with all the other budget DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.

Plus, despite owning 5-figures worth of DSLR gear, I think DSLR systems are going the way of the dinosaur and will become a high-end and niche market in the near future (a la MF and LF cameras).

u/Streetiebird · 3 pointsr/Beginning_Photography

If you're looking for something which can go underwater, then you'll either need a fairly expensive and bulky underwater housing, or one of the few models which can go underwater on their own.

I would recommend either, the Nikon 1 AW1, which can go underwater without a housing. Though only two lenses are capable of going underwater.

Or the Sony A6000 and an underwater housing for it.

The Nikon mirrorless system doesn't have as big of a sensor as its peers, but they're very small and light.

The Sony mirrorless cameras are pretty awesome, have a normal-sized sensor, and are lightweight compared to a full DSLR with a mirror. If I was going to buy a new system I would either get the A6000 or the more expensive A6300.

Hope this helps!

u/Wombodia · 3 pointsr/a6000

I haven't personally ever bought a camera used but I know there are a lot of good places to get a solid deal on an a6000 as it has been out for a while and one of the more popular mirrorless cameras. Sounds like you have a good eye on eBay.

I would check out /r/photomarket as you can get an a6000 for $300-400 depending on amount of shutter count, overall condition, and if it comes with the kit lens. You also might search your local Craigslist and Facebook marketplace for an a6000, might not have any luck but it is worth a shot. You also might check Adorama or B&H as they occasionally have them as well. Your best bet would probably be /r/photomarket thought.

If you want new Amazon usually has it on sale every few months around $400 for the body only. You can check the camelcamelcamel here. If you want the kit lens with it they usually go for $500, again you can check here regarding the historic prices on Amazon. Usually if it goes on sale through Amazon it will be on sale on other sites like Adorama, B&H, etc. If you can hold off I would personally go for a new one via Amazon the next time it goes down to $400.

It would push your budget to get native lenses, but you can get adapters to work with your canon lenses. Note that there is some compromises with doing this, more than anything else I believe the AF slows down even more going through adapters.

http://www.metabones.com/products/?c=e-mount

You will also have a much shorter battery life, since the sony batteries are way smaller in capacity than Nikon/Cannon. However, I have the sonya7ii + native lenses + peak designs clip for backpacking, and as long as your lens isnt too big/heavy it works relatively well.

I will be moving to an Asian country for about 3 years in the military and looking to purchase my first camera for my wife and I.

We are currently pretty sold on the Song A6000 from reading all the reviews on it, it being our first and our budget.

Below is the deal I’m looking at. It’s $848 for the camera, 16-50mm lens and 55-210mm lens. We know nothing about cameras but really want to give it a shot, especially with us living in an Asian country.

We plan on taking lots of pictures of the landscape, daily street life, and traveling to other Asian countries and taking the same ones there. This includes monuments, Disney Parks, etc.

Would the 55-210mm lens be a good investment in the package for these types of pictures?

m43 shooter here.

Fuji makes great stills cameras. They have notoriously bad video. It's ok for personal use, but not usable in a professional context. Here is a short sample.

Even old fuji models get feature upgrades via firmware updates - the X-E2 is nearly identical to the X-E2S due to a firmware update. Fuji glass is all good. "Fuji’s 18-55mm is regularly viewed as the non-kit lens kit lens. People rave about it’s sharpness, the quality of its bokeh."

Sony makes computers that can take pictures and video. They probably take the best pictures for a given intro price, but I personally dislike their usability. I prefer physical controls to ones on a screen.

----------------------------------

I know you didn't ask, but if you want the most compact option, m43 is the way to go. Yes, the sensor is smaller, but that means the lenses require less glass.

Olympus makes stills-oriented cameras that have ok video. Their newest camera is a rangefinder style as well, but it's $1200 without a lens.

Panasonic and Sony are competitors for the best video. The GX85 might be of interest. It is the first camera with in-body stabilized 4k video, which you might like.

I'm trying to decide on my first camera (mirrorless), any help would be appreciated. These are the options:

[https://www.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-LUMIX-DMC-GX7-16-0MP-Digital-Camera-Silver-Body-Only-/282733706288?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c10](Lumix DMC-GX7 - Used (body only) 260 Eur) - some kind of a cheap outlier.

PANASONIC LUMIX G7 4K Mirrorless Camera, with 14-42mm MEGA O.I.S. Lens - 540 eur. The lens included has image stabilization, but I'm still a little bit bummed about it not having any stabilization in the body. My always trembling hands are my worst enemy. But then I'm probably exaggerating, it can't be that bad, can it?

OLYMPUS E-M10II (Silver) + 14-42mm IIR (Silver) 579.99 €

This (and a sony 6000 + some fuji) was the only camera I got to hold and I was blown away by the way it (and sony, fuji really sucked) sat in my hand, it was just perfect and the fact that it felt secure when held by just one hand left a good impression on me. However, I didn't try any of its functions, and I don't know how good is the lens. I am thinking about this and the G7 as my first and cheapest options. The main things that I have for olympus is that I can buy it here from a physical store and the ergonomics. The G7 though I would buy because it has more features (as in my list below), but I have no clue how well it's going to be ergonomics-wise and how well will the lack of in-body stabilization work.

Fujifilm X-T20 Silver+XC 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS II Black Lens 790 €

This has APS-C (I don't really know if there's much difference between this and 4/3, but still nice), but doesn't have an in-body stabilizer. And only tilting lcd, and that's it? Wait why am I even considering this...

Panasonic Lumix G85 961€

Things that make me consider Lumix G85:

 - Environmental sealing. I Would absolutely love to use my camera in rain and snow. Or can it be done even if there is no sealing? Neither my phone or headphones had ever had any issues, and they're constantly under pouring rain.

 - Fully articulated display. I don't even know why I want this - I'm not a big selfie fan, and I don't film videos, but just the thought of someday wanting to and already being able to do so with the resources already under my possession makes me feel a tad bit "future proof"... I've never had a "real" camera so I don't know what things I could think of doing with it. What if not having such a screen would limit something I'd want to do at some point, for example taking a picture of something on ground level, or stealth mode?

 - Image stabilizer. I've read that having body stabilization is a lot better than having a lens stabilization, and I myself would feel a little bit more secure knowing that I can buy any lens and not be limited to only those that have inner stabilization.

 - Possibility that there are some new technologies in it that you couldn't find in older models (taking still shots from a 4k video, for example, or

 - Battery saving mode)

It's all good, but is it worth paying twice for all of this?

Is there something else I might be forgetting right now? I'm leaning towards G7 right now.. I'd probably pick sony a6300 if it only had touch screen (navigating through menu with only buttons has been a pain in the ass in my experience)

I want to use it for travel and occasional portrait/landscape photo

> Honestly, man, how could you be okay with the camera being so shit in your beloved phone?

Because it's not shit and perfectly usable for 99% of smartphone use. This is from a Sony Xperia Z3+. If I want a better camera, I'll just buy a Sony Alpha A6000. I've never understood the smartphone camera craze. Who cares about how good a smartphone's camera is when most people will use it for Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook which ruins your photos anyway. The pictures from a Samsung may look worse than an Xperia after being uploaded to these websites/apps. Get a mirrorless camera is you care so much about image quality.

>Samsung, LG, and pretty much all OEMs are bad at rolling updates, and yes, Sony is good. But the update is not gonna magically let you take a good picture, change a just okay-ish display to a stunning AMOLED display, let the US users access the fingerprint reader.

I like Sony displays. Amoled also gets burn-in. I don't see any difference between an AMOLED and my Xperias. In fact, Samsung phones show the ugly sub-pixel matrix at low resolutions which is non-existent on midrange Xperia phones. I also don't care about the fingerprint scanner. I'm not American and the firmware takes one minute to change.

$90 Sony W800 point and shoot.

$450 Sony A6000 digital SLR.

Either of these are a suitable backup in the event your cell phone gets confiscated or damaged.

The Sony A6000 Hands down the best in that price range. You are going to want decent audio though so I would recommend also getting something like The Rode Video Micro.

youtube vlogging setups is also a great place to get some really good info!

u/MrMeursault · 3 pointsr/photography

I've been lusting over the A7s, it is the low light king. Not at all in your budget though. The D3200 probably isn't the best as it has troubles focusing in low light. The kit lens is a definite no no as it doesn't do well in low light. If you go DSLR go at least d5200 for $500 paired with the 35mm f/1.8 lens for $200. A refurbished d5300 can be found for $600 and would also be a great choice paired with that 35mm.

The Sony a6000 ($450 for body $600 for kit) is making a lot of noise in the mirrorless format at that pricepoint and can be paired with the 35mm f/1.8 at $400 for a total of $850, just above your budget.

u/AsleepConstruction · 3 pointsr/Cameras

Sony A6000 + the 18-105 F4 for general photography, this should be a good start and will get her a quality lens that will get her plenty of reach. This should be right around $1100ish

down the road she can add these options:

add the 35 f1.8 for great portrait photos with better background separation. Alternatively you can start her with this lens first, being smaller and lighter means she will be more likely carry it around with her.

add the 16 2.8 for hiking thanks to the compact size and theme parks, or just anywhere she needs it in a more compact size.

u/eirtep · 3 pointsr/barstoolsports

what's your budget?

I think mirrorless micro 4/3rds cameras from Panasonic or Olympus are pretty great casual cameras cause they're great quality cameras packed into a small and compact body/lens system. The pansonic G7 comes to mind, but they have lower budget/entry models as well. There are other options tho - I'd check out these 3 decent starter cameras:

Panasonic m43 mirrorless:

Pansonic g7

Sony APS-C mirrorless:

Sony A6000

Canon APS-C DSLR:

Canon t7i

I think a million people may have had t#i as their first budget camera. it's good but at this point that series is kinda shit for the price point imo. Canon's prosumer/pro cameras are still great for photo but Sony and Panasonic imo crush them in budget/entry level stuff and are better at any price point for combined photo+video use.

> A 90 second exposure of the sky is gonna give you streaky stars no matter what the focal length.

Whatever the number is. I'm not an astrophotographer, just trying to impart the importance of shooting longer than the pre-programmed exposure lengths.

As far as your suggestion of the T7i... I can't help but feel like that's a lateral upgrade at best. Marginally better video features and another kit lens for $1000; could sell the T5, get a used body and a $600 lens and be off to the races. Or a GX85 with a kit lens for $600 that has dual image stabilization and 4K video AND have $400 left over for a sexier lens.

I dunno; t2i was my first camera, t3i was my second camera, then GH3, then GH5, and then a Fuji to add into the mix. The Fuji is my favorite by a wide margin. APS-C sensor trumps the MFT sensors of the GH series, with better image quality and color science than the Canons, and a small form factor for street photography or low key videography. One of my favorite low-fi DP's shot on a t2i and a 30mm Sigma f/1.4; I don't see a reason to get a T7i over that combo.

Not trying to be Cathy Contrarian, just my two cents.

My recommendations

All of these meet your resolution and frame rate requirements.

Rx100
this camera is very conveniently sized. it has a non interchangeable 24-70 lens but it is a really good lens. In your case it would be great since its small, light, and takes really nice photos and video. It also has image stabilization and insane auto-focus. One of the reasons this camera is so popular is the slow motion capabilities. If you want interchangeable lens the a6300-and a6500 carry the same sony auto focus that is just rediculous.

G85
Finally this camera is geared more towards video people. It has the least mega pixel count of the two but with the no low pass filter it still can go head to head in pic quality with the other above. One of the biggest features of this camera is the image stabilization, it will blow you away. In addition to IBIS it also has great auto focus and the best touch screen available of a camera, its also sealed and can with stand a "camping" environment.

u/MasterU571 · 2 pointsr/Filmmakers

I think you could greatly benefit from something like the Panasonic G85. It's the camera I'm currently saving up for. It's got those great mirrorless benefits, but without that price tag. Currently at $1k.

u/Thestassinator · 2 pointsr/Filmmakers

I've been glued to this subreddit since September soaking up all the information possible as the filming process began.

So we shot this with a Lumix GH5 with a 12mm-35mm lens. We had the camera on a JOBY GorillaPod but we couldn't get any sort of tape (Gaff, Duct etc) to get it to stick to the dashboard. So for the front angle we used the legs of the pod and hung it from the rear view mirror and shot the skit upside down. We put the lens on the widest setting and put it on auto focus.

For audio we used a Zoom H4n Pro. We placed it on a little stand resting on the center console on the 120 setting. All audio was captured on the day, none of it is ADR.

The biggest challenge in the edit bay was the fact that some takes we're done when the car was at a red light while some we're in motion. We had a 6 mile loop which we drove over and over and we just ran through the skit multiple times not really paying attention to whether we were moving or stopped. It was 48 minutes of footage cut down to 2:19 of actual skit.

As far as my involvement went, I co-wrote, acted, captured audio and edited the skit. I'm the guy in the blue shirt riding shotgun (Dane) for reference.

Would love any feedback, thoughts, or advice!

u/DrKenshin · 2 pointsr/Cameras

If you want something a bit "time-proof" that won't become irrelevant and last you years right now I'd say the new Lumix GH5 that shoots 4k in camera, a good zoom lens for video, a Rode fuzzy mic, and spend the rest in extra batteries and the biggest, fastest SD cards you can find for cheap. Honestly right now I don't think you could find anything better in budget. You might look into the Sony A7sII but a good lens will run you more than it would for the lumix, battery life is worse. I'd check both setups locally and see what you like best and whatever leaves you some spare budget for the mic/batteries/SDs. And if you manage a cheap chinese LED video light might come in handy too. Hope this helps. :)

Lots of people use their iphones as a camera. I brought a nicer camera and was happy I did. I also used it as a teaching tool to teach my youth how to use a camera and let them take photos. So I guess think what you want to do with it and go from there.

u/zorkmids · 2 pointsr/bicycletouring

You're going about this all wrong: this is an opportunity to buy a new camera :-)

You could get a nice compact micro-4/3 camera that will fit in your Ortlieb Compact for $300 - $500. The sensor is not as large a DSLR (about 40% smaller), but the optics and electronics are generally comparable. I like the Olympus PEN E-PL1, which is only $260. The Panasonic Lumix is also well regarded.

u/Timetobuzzthetower · 2 pointsr/CampingandHiking

Half are from a GoPro mounted to a telescopic pole from hardware store and the other half are from this camera.

u/EventualCyborg · 2 pointsr/daddit

I bought my wife an Olympus Pen E-PL1 last year for Mother's Day and she loves it. Our Sony point-and-shoot just wasn't cutting the mustard and cell phone pictures don't play well with high-energy toddlers who end up as blurs. It's not the nicest camera in the world, but it's a heck of a lot better than what we had and it's not nearly as complicated as a DSLR. I also got a screaming deal on it, with the camera, a spare battery, a 16GB memory card, and a case for under $325. My wife simply didn't want the complexity or the bulk of a DSLR and that camera is small enough that its case could easily fit in the diaper bag, beach bag, or even her purse.

u/jvanderh · 2 pointsr/photography

I posted awhile back about upgrading from a point and shoot to a used four thirds for food photography. You all were super helpful, and I'm looking to make a decision in the next few days, so I thought I'd ask again about the options I'm looking at. I'm basically looking for under $200, with a lens included in that. Amazon would be ideal, because I have a gift card.

I have a few different PENs in my cart (E-PM1, E-PL1, E-PL2, E-PL3) as well as a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 and a Sony Alpha Nex-3.

I'm not married to those models, they're just the ones I found in the price range. I'm especially wondering: would the increased resolution of the NEX be noticeable? And even though they're all four thirds, do some have bigger/better sensors than others? Any advice or alternate recommendations much appreciated.

Edit: I do care about it being able to do video.

u/PardonMyHarden · 2 pointsr/Cameras

I posted about a week ago, about the same question. I got a few good replies. The one I went with was this Olympus PEN E-PL1 I just got it yesterday, but I love it so far. It is compact, has an interchangeable lens, "Can grow with you" is what the person said. It is also cheap enough that you can either afford another lens or whatnot. It doesn't come with an SD card however, but those are about 20-30 bucks. I bought a travel case also. Total investment so far is 250.

It is much more powerful than a point and shoot, yet not overly complicated or large.

Just what I was looking for. I'd say minimally do some research on it!

Hi all,

I've been shooting on my nikon D3200 for almost 4 years now, and I think I'm ready for an upgrade.

My uses are typically landscapes and various nature shots including some macro stuff, in addition to some video here and there, as well as some astrophotography.

Unfortunately my budget is still very low. I can't really afford full frame anything, so I'm staying away from that for now.

My question is, what is a logical step from here?

Is it worth it to upgrade? Should I just hold out with my d3200 until I can upgrade to a full frame from Nikon or Canon?

The cameras I've been looking at are all mirrorless, I've been looking at offerings from Sony and Fujifilm

Namely the Sony a6300 and the Fuji X-T20

I hoping any of you could point me in the right direction

Thank You!

TL;DR Looking for a mirrorless replacement for my Nikon D3200 any help is appreciated

u/Cum_Omlette · 2 pointsr/graphic_design

Just recently started getting into photography because of how influential it is in design (so please take what I say as a grain of salt). To start things off, photography in general is more equipment heavy than graphic design I will say. A lot of people will argue that you can replicate any photo style on any camera, but I typically disagree with this.

With that being said, price points can also be a be a bit subjective and relate with your experience level. A professional might consider a $1,500 lens to be cheap, while newcomers might find spending $1,000+ on a full kit to be expensive.

I might be a bit biased as it was the first camera I've ever bought, but I personally love Sony cameras! While Cannon, Nikon and Pentax have made names for themselves, Sony is quickly catching up with their market. In general, Sony's line of cameras are extremely universal, with their e-mount lenses the possibilities are endless. They've even provided lens adapters for many of the top camera companies, if you ever wanted to buy additional lenses.

My first camera was a Sony A6000, and I highly recommend it as a beginner level camera! They have a more updated Sony A6300, but it's entirely up to you and what you plan on using it for.

u/jmdelvecchio · 2 pointsr/WildernessBackpacking

I love my Sony NEX 3N. It's so compact but takes beautiful shots and allows for a lot of adjustable settings that mimic a much bulkier DSLR. Can also buy other lenses. I do a ton of hiking in difficult terrain for my research and it's so easy to throw in a small case. Battery life also superb. takes great video too. https://www.amazon.com/Sony-NEX-3NL-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera/dp/B00BF9MUBM/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1499790290&sr=1-2&keywords=sony+nex+3n

u/Bitteraftertaste · 2 pointsr/AskPhotography

I would have to agree with avoiding the DSLR and just going for a Mirrorless camera. You basically get the full performance of a DSLR, but much smaller and lighter weight. Unless you are going to be taking action sports shots at night with autofocus, there is really no disadvantage.

In fact, there is a large advantage to going with a Mirrorless Sony Camera; You can put basically any lens you find on it with a cheap ($15-$35) adapter. This means you can learn about lenses and photography with whatever you find at garage sales, antique malls, and ebay listings without having to invest a lot of money. I currently have 6 different lenses, that are all excellent, that all together cost less then 1 lens of the cheapest variety for a DSLR.

Check out this Sony NEX-3N. It is small enough to fit in your pocket, yet is just as powerful (if not more) than any comparably priced DSLR.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the NEX-3 line is completely geared towards beginners in the fact that it has Help Tips for every single setting on the camera explaining why you would want to change the setting, and when it is most important.

u/johnny5ive · 2 pointsr/photography

Christ you can get a new A7 for sub $1300! Used have got to be going for less than $1000 now that the A7ii is out.

u/avgxp · 2 pointsr/photography

You can get a Sony a7 brand new for just below that, and although Sony lenses are expensive, if you are confortable with manual focus, legacy lenses are very affordable.

u/Laupos · 2 pointsr/AskPhotography

The original Sony a7 is actually quite a bargain for a full frame sensor and is well within the budget of op. However, it doesn't have the great image stabilization.

u/finaleclipse · 2 pointsr/photography

Full frame is going to give you the best low light performance for sure (the 6D is a solid choice, as will the Nikon D610 and Sony A7-series cameras).

That being said, light and small with average sensor size you'd do well to look at some of the modern APS-C offerings that Fuji and Sony have. Fuji has some crazy nice glass for their lenses, some of which is pretty affordable. You could pick up an X-T1 for ~$900 and 35mm f1.4 for ~$450 (or 35mm f2 WR for $300) for a solid start, then save up for a longer zoom lens in the future like their 50-140mm f2.8 OIS WR. Of course, there's also 3rd party options like Sigma making lenses for the X-mount too. And finally, this is all assuming you're buying brand new, you can save a good deal of money going the used route.

u/musubk · 2 pointsr/CampingandHiking

As a semi-pro photographer who owns like 6 dSLR's, I'm going to second the recommendation for a Sony NEX/a-series for a hiking camera. I had an F3 but ruined it in a crash with my drone, soon to be replaced with a NEX6, but if I was willing to spend $800 on a hiking camera it'd be the a6000 (they've dropped the NEX name in the current models). I use them with adapters so I can use my good Nikon glass but it looks like the Sony lenses aren't bad. I still carry my Nikon D610 in the pack when backpacking but it's awkward dangling around my neck.

For $500-$600, this

For $800, this

NEX/a-series main advantage is that it uses an APS-C sized sensor rather than a micro 4/3s. A bigger sensor generally has better noise and color characteristics and nicer depth of field. If you want entry or mid level dSLR quality in a compact package, these cameras will do it. My Nikon D7000 is only superior in ergonomics.

If the zoom you're talking about was 'digital zoom', it's exactly the same thing as taking a picture without zoom and cropping the image later on your computer. Don't let that be a selling point. There are optical zoom lenses for the NEX/a-series line and you can use a really wide variety of lenses with adapters since the cameras are thin enough to give the proper backfocal distance even with an adapter and the sensor is the larger size that dSLR lenses are intended to work with.

Short version, the NEX/Alpha line has good image quality, is simple enough to start with, and is expandable enough with lens adapters if you decide you need more in the future.

You will need to learn composition and exposure if you want good results no matter what you get. It's not true what people say that the camera doesn't matter, but a nice camera won't make a bad photo good.

u/bigdogxxl · 2 pointsr/iphone

Think DSLR but smaller. I highly recommend the Sony A6000 with the stock 16-50mm lens. You can pick one up less than $600 brand new on Amazon, stick in auto mode and get some fantastic shots. It's also a great camera to learn on if you do decide to keep it and want to go beyond the auto setting. Here's something I took a few months ago on auto (very lightly retouched).

The other option is something like the Sony RX100 point and shoot. Again, it's a tiny camera and on auto you will get great shots.

u/inverse_squared · 2 pointsr/SonyAlpha

It's an OK price. Full price from an authorized dealer is only $600:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I8BICB2

Sony cameras aren't usually liked for astrophotography due to their star-eater issue:

http://www.markshelley.co.uk/Astronomy/SonyA7S/sonystareater.html

I would also look into the Fuji X-T100.

And regardless of whether you pick the Sony or Fuji, I would also specifically recommend the Rokinon 12mm f/2 lens for astrophotography and landscapes / cityscapes. It's much wider than any lens that comes with the cameras.

u/PrimordialXY · 2 pointsr/AskPhotography

My top 3 picks under $600 would be:

Nikon D5600

Olympus OM-D E-M10 M3

Sony a6000

These are all excellent beginner cameras that'll last you through your entire amateur phase at minimum. The Nikon 5600 is currently on sale for $550 brand new (normally retails for $800+) and comes with a decent kit lens. I hope you found this useful!

Hello fellow Michigan(area) Person.... Lake Orion, MI here.

Remember, whichever camp you go with (Sony, Nikon, Canon, Panasonic) For the most part you're going to want to stick with that, so you can move your Lenses (the true investment) among your cameras.

All of these cameras with Shoot RAW.

Canon has the T5i which is in the price range. It has all the manual options available, plus it is very forgiving. 18-55mm Kit will set you back about $650. I borrow the T3i from a friend, it has its moments (Again, I'm not usually using Canons) especially when it came to white balancing. BUT! Shoot Raw and forget about it. I'm sure the T5i has resolved that issue. : http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-Rebel-EF-S-18-55/dp/B00BW6LWO4/ref=sr_1_2?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1451374398&sr=1-2&keywords=canon+t5i

If you want Amateur friendly, I would (strongly) suggest the Sony A6000 series for your price range. While not technically a DSLR (its a mirrorless), Above all, they are VERY compact so if you travel a lot, they are just an awesome companion. To me, I feel that it is one of the best travel cameras that are made, given what you get for the footprint. Lacking a GPS, sadly... but one day soon. I have a NEX3 (Older version) that I've shot so many amazing pictures with. Here is the A6000 This comes with a 16-50MM range : http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera-16-50mm/dp/B00I8BICB2/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1451374561&sr=1-1&keywords=sony+a6000

In the other corner, on the more video side of things (being able to shoot amazing videos)

For 800 I would recommend (as a suggestion) a GH2 kit. Beyond photography, it is a killer video camera (as paraphrased by Philip Bloom). These can be obtained used for the $700 mark on Amazon all day long. This of course is also not technically a DSLR, Micro 4:3.

u/maroon23 · 2 pointsr/photography

I'm wondering if this would be a good choice for a beginner camera.

I've been looking at getting into the basics of photography and I like the features and the premise of mirrorless cameras since I would mainly be using them outside when hiking. (Don't like the weight of a dslr nor the lack of customization of a point and shoot)

Also should I get a different lens other than the one bundled?

It may be your skill but you're also most likely not using a good lens for it. You need a macro lens that can do 1:1 or 1:2 magnification. Here's a nice video that gives a cool introduction to macro photography and the most common gotchas.

Product photography is not hard once you got a decent lens, you can do it at home and you mostly need a white sheet of paper as background and some natural light coming in through the window. You can of course add artificial lights and all kinds of tricks as well as post-processing, but those are the basics for getting some decent shots straight out of camera.

Now the Tamron SP 90mm mentioned in the above video is a very nice macro lens but a manual focus version is about $200 and an autofocus version is more so it's not a good fit for your budget. Perhaps something to keep in mind for later on. Manual focus is fine for your needs, the leather I presume is not going anywhere so no need for autofocus. The focal length (90mm) is also not a versatile length for travel.

So for now focus on your travel needs. The Sony A6000 with a 16-50mm zoom is about $400-425 used.

The A6000 is a mirrorless camera and can easily adapt macro lenses from most other camera mounts, so it would not be a problem later to get a macro lens plus a $20 adapter and it will work fine. I recommend looking for older manual focus macro lenses because like I said you don't need autofocus, and older lenses are cheaper but just as good as long as the glass is in good condition.

Thanks for the help.

I just had a buddy over helping me compare some mirrorless cameras. Check out the Sony a6000 on Amazon. Kit options, lens options, lots of features and easy to pack around if you don't want to lug around a DSLR. I'm no expert but it seems very capable to me.

I am just getting into photography ( I am also interested in video, but I feel like I will mostly be taking photos) , and am looking to get my first camera. Right now I'm torn between the Sony a6000 or the Panasonic G7, both are priced very well right now.

Also, is there any lens that you recommend for the camera you suggest? Will mostly be shooting nature shots.

The shoe camera is just a cheap point and shoot (cheap as in ~$400). The Canon PowerShot SX50 HS

Although I blurred the background since I had a personal e-mail account opened on the screen and my name was on there. So that post-effect Photoshop blur might make it look nicer because that is causing a possible faux Depth of Field look.

The main photo was taken in studio with a Canon EOS 70D ~$1000 for the body alone. Coworker took the photo as it's a camera for work. Although I do a lot of video, etc. in my free time as well. I'm likely buying the Panasonic GH3 soon.

If portability is the concern, there is the option of a mirrorless camera.. Again, you could pick something up within that range (though I will say I'm not as familiar with those options, but plenty of other people around here are if you ask.)

Honestly, with cell phone cameras being what they are, I think mirrorless would be a better option for you. They're emerging tech, while P&S is starting to go the way of the dinosaurs.

Just a thought :)

Edit: Here’s an example of one, reasonably close to your price range, that appears to take gorgeous pictures and still has a small body:

Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digitial Camera 24.3MP SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD (Black) w/ 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I8BICB2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_HpPZAbDNDK6YW

Again, I’m not an expert in this (or any photography field, really) but I just want to point out things you may not have considered before you spend that much money on tech that is limited to what you pull out of the box (as opposed to expandable with better lenses) and fairly widely regarded as becoming obsolete.

They all look about the same, but are each $100 more than the other. I'm just wondering if the $700 is actually worth it over the $500 one. Right now I am using an older point and shoot.

This is what I'll be using the camera for, day light shots of costume stuff I make and sale, low light rave pictures of the tails, and my bunny. Honestly, for the price, look into mirrorless cameras like the current Sony alpha series or Panasonic lumix. They’re great cameras, I’ll link a few in a minute here.

Brands like Rokinon make fairly affordable lenses too.

Edit:

$500

$650

$1000

$1050

Seconding what the other commenter said about buying used. I have a Sony A7s ii that I picked up used for just under a grand and it’s been a great camera for both video and photo purposes. Saving up for a Panasonic GH5s next.

Just make sure you research the the camera best suited for what you’d like to do (video, photography) and make sure the lenses you get fit your camera body or you have an adapter (Sony uses E mount lenses and the Lumix cameras take G or micro 4/3s, for example). Get the right speed SD card (if you get a 4k camera - the write speed should preferably be higher than 95mbps) and figure out the kind of lenses best suited to you (zoom lenses are versatile, but prime lenses tend to have better aperture ranges and depth of field).

There are also tons of blogs and videos that can explain everything you need to know.

u/PictureYouThis · 1 pointr/photography

Have you considered a mirrorless camera? They are more portable and older Sony models are in your price range. You can get a Sony a6000 on Amazon for $600 with a 16-50 mm kit lens. It's a great camera with a high burst rate and excellent image quality.

EDIT: Grammar

u/BlauweKaasstengel · 1 pointr/photography

Looking for a camera with great video and photography capabilities in low light while still being small and not too expensive. My question is: does anyone have any experience with insert one of the camera's listed below both with video and photography? I'm very interested in the Sony A6000 but I'm open for other suggestions.

Sony DSC-RX100 (Able to get it for € 385,00)

Sony Alpha a6000 (Able to get it for € 594.00 with lens)

Canon EOS M3 (Able to get it for € 459,00 with lens)

u/Angry_helper · 1 pointr/Cameras

A mirrorless camera with a wide angle lens is probably what you want. You can get something like a Sony a6000 Body and a Rokinon/Samyang 12mm f/2. You could also use a kit 16-50 lens instead of buying the separate body and lens kit link

The a6000 is pretty good with low light (although a full frame camera is almost always better, but more expensive). The camera has decent wifi functionalities. A smartphone app allows you to transfer the images and/or control the camera like a remote.

You can save more money if you buy the body and then get used lenses, which is great for mirror less cameras.

u/tjl_p · 1 pointr/photography

None of the cameras you listed are that compact unfortunately. Look into the a6000, it's at the top end of your price range.

To be honest, I'd suggest something like an RX100M2 instead of an interchangeable lens camera. It'll last forever and it has everything you need in a super compact package. It's more capable than any of those Canons and it has NFC in addition to Wifi.

Hi everyone!

I'm looking to get back into photography after having a run with a dslr years ago. This time I'm looking in to trying mirrorless and wanted some help picking a camera.

What would I use it for? mainly portrait work but I would like to take urban landscape type shots and nature landscape shots when I travel.

Budget? max 700 (i know, one link is above that amount) but would prefer to keep it max 500

I have looked at the buying guide and some of the posts on here with recommended cameras and in all honesty I'm even more confused now.

So far these are the options I am looking at:

I am planning on buying more lenses farther down the line (and possibly flash if required... clearly I'm new at this) so any recommendations for that as well would be great.

Thanks in advance ☺

No problem!

I used a Sony A6000 with that 16-50 kit lens. It's been a wonderful starter camera.

u/marsofwar · 1 pointr/photography

Definitely talk to your fiance about what she wants to do. A lot of people want to get into photography cause they see the image quality and the pretty bokeh and/or blurry backgrounds but the reality of it is, not everyone wants to lug around a hefty piece of equipment everywhere.

Does she just want some better quality pictures to put on social media sites (FB, instagram, etc..)? Or does she really want to go around and look for nice angles and composition?

If you can borrow someone's camera for a week that'll be a great way to start. If not, and she just wants better quality pictures, maybe start off with Canon S series or the G series. Very solid cameras and small form factor make them ideal to carry around.

For a beginner dslr, as others have stated, thats a good bundle to start. Or go up to the t5i.

Or for a little more, you can get her Sony a6000. Very solid camera with good image quality and small as well so its easier to carry around.

Most of the online gaming community calls me Zaerr, but my real name is Christian. I live in New Hampshire right now, but I was born and raised in New Jersey. I work sales for a plumbing supply company right now, and I've had this a6000 mirror less camera for a while now, and really want to do something with it. I recently went to PAX EAST in Boston, and decided to bring my camera to take photos of cosplayers and my friends and really had such a great time. My photos were not the best, but I feel like this is something I can really learn and pursue. I have never been particularly good at many things in my life, but I had so much fun that it sparked a fire in my soul.

I really enjoy macro shots, and portrait shots.

and I have an old canon eos 10D a few lenses for it. I'm wondering if my Canon lenses would be compatible on the alpha6000 or whether I should just sell them. The two lenses I have are "Canon Zoom Lens EF 75-300mm" and "Canon 28-80mm"

u/perceptibledesign · 1 pointr/Cameras

If you can spend a little more I'd get a Sony A7 which is full frame or get the lower priced a6000 which would allow room for you to get another lens in addition to the kit lens. Both options will allow you to change lenses which will allow you to upgrade lenses down the road. Full frame is nice but the a6000 is sweet. Also get two spare batteries because they use them quickly and when hiking you may need the extra juice. Get at least a 16 or 32GB memory card and you'll have plenty of room for a bunch of photos and video too.

Edit: In this price range nothing will be rugged but can take being jammed in a pack for a day.

u/iserane · 1 pointr/photography

Not a single vendor on Amazon has had it at $500 until this past week. $550 for the past month. The body only has been $500 several times this year.

You are either mistaken or it is a pricing error. I'd bet money you are simply mistaken.

Without saying anything about lens quality here are some price comparisons.

[Nikon D3300 w/ kit] (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-Focus-S-18-55mm-3-5-5-6G/dp/B00HQ4W1QE) $447, [35mm 1.8] (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-AF-S-NIKKOR-Focus-Cameras/dp/B001S2PPT0) $177, [50mm 1.8] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Y1AYAC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=cpc02-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004Y1AYAC) $197

vs

Sony A6000 w/ kit $650, 35mm 1.8 $450, 50mm 1.8 $250

I'm not trying to say one is better than the other, just making a comparison. On the Sony you get OSS with the lenses which drives the price up. If you are trying to save money though, OSS might not be that important.

u/voiceofid · 1 pointr/Cameras

you can buy an a6000 in the US right now at $600 with lenses or $400 without

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Alpha-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera/dp/B00I8BICCG/

probably a better route

u/pedrocr · 1 pointr/photography

To complement DatAperture's answer the other option in the mirrorless market is Sony. The tradeoff is probably a bit better quality (the same sensors as in APS-C DSLRs) versus larger size and less lens selection.

For your budget you could get a very nice body:

  • A6000 648$ (24MP, latest model, supposedly very fast next-generation autofocus)

    Or a cheaper kit:

  • NEX 3 with 16-50 lens $398 (16MP older model)

and then complement it with some lenses:

  • 16/2.8 $248
  • 20/2.8 $348
  • 35/1.8 $448
  • 50/1.8 $298

The Sigma ones are also available in Nex mount:

  • 19/2.8 $199
  • 30/2.8 $199
  • 60/2.8 $239

For my kind of shooting, on a backpacking trip of Europe I'd go for A6000+19/2.8+50/1.8. Fits in your budget. Is light and small. Gets you a wide angle for scenery and a 50 for everything else, including low light. If you prefer zooms you can get the A6000 with the 16-50 kit lens plus a 55-210.

I got a body from Amazon warehouse deals for $385 a few weeks ago. It said the screen was scratched but I didn't notice any issues. (Looks like prices went up a little though).

Lenses: I just bought an adapter for some old manual focus Canon FD lenses I had laying around. The adapter was $15 and the 3 lenses probably cost me $100ish on eBay.

So I just bought an SD card, 2 batteries, and a dual charger for another ~$50.

I do plan on getting newer lenses later, but so far I'm enjoying the manual set up. A lot of bang for your buck.

Focus peaking can make it easier to focus manually. It highlights what's in focus like this.

I have a sony a6000 with 50mm prime lens. You could get the macro version but this makes for a killer all-around lens with beautiful bokeh. I used 26mm extension rings to get it to focus at close range

Yeah, I suppose the difference between a $1k camera vs a $30k+ camera is quite substantial. I think you've convinvced me for the GH4, and it would be a much easier transition (given I still have to figure out how to tinker around with V-Log settings)

So you're saying get the GH4 with V-LOG. So not all GH4's have V-LOG built in? For example, the one on Amazon doesn't have V-LOG? And V-LOG is better to use over the Cinelike D that the GH4 has?

I picked up a Panasonic GX-85 kit with two lenses this past June for $500 USD and have been very pleased with it. The GX-85 is a 16mp Mirrorless micro 4/3 that is compact takes good pictures and also does very good at taking video (both 4k and 1080p). Look it up on DPReview (they are a good source of info on cameras in general).

This isn't the latest model, but it does have a lot of bang for the buck. If you do choose to order it definitely get some spare batteries and a charger (it does in-camera charging but doesn't come with a charger, any you can get spare aftermarket batteries and chargers for pretty cheap), - The spare batteries are pretty much a "Must" for any mirrorless camera as they tend to not have the greatest battery life.

Just looked on Amazon - here is an example of price: https://www.amazon.com/PANASONIC-12-32mm-45-150mm-Stabilization-DMC-GX85WK/dp/B079VDF7ZG/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=lumix+gx-85&qid=1574777069&s=electronics&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&sr=1-6

Might want to look at the Panasonic Gx85. Not the highest quality images at 16mp and M4/3 but looks like it would do pretty good for video and has in-body stabilization and the images should be more than sufficient for most. Its under your budget right now for a two lens kit. It is mirrorless though, which tends to be better for video anyway. https://www.amazon.com/PANASONIC-12-32mm-45-150mm-Stabilization-DMC-GX85WK/dp/B079VDF7ZG/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=panasonic+gx85&qid=1574688778&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&sr=8-3

Have you considered the Lumix G85 (amazon affiliate link that goes towards funding my college senior thesis film). It's mirrorless so it's very lightweight, and can be put on any number of hand grips to help stabilize it even further. In addition to the one I linked above having a zoom lens, the body has a micro four thirds interchangeable lens system, which means that you could get a prime lens to record yourself at home. It also has a microphone input so you could get a shotgun mic that would be an incredible step up in audio quality.

u/inkista · 1 pointr/AskPhotography

Camera prices depreciate, even while a model is new. What the initial MSRP is tends to get lowered over time as the street price. The easiest way I've found to figure out what the current street price of something is, is to check Amazon, B&H, and Adorama prices. :D

The price has been at $800 since August, according to camelcamelcamel.com, which graphs both new and used Amazon prices over time (G85 graph). But B&H is saying the $200 off deal is until Nov 21st, so could be a Black Friday deal is in the offing. But there's never a guarantee.

Ah,
Well considering they sell for 699$ with the kit lens, memory cards, etc...

I'm not too sure how much more I'm willing to spend. Might just pick up an A6400 instead myself lol

I got the G85(MK) abt... a week after I posted this https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MXHN32J/.

The 4k is nice indeed without any memory restriction, just haven't got a big chance to use it yet until November.

As a Youtuber who's invested in the wrong gear before the right gear, here's a quality list that I've found works for my needs and will likely be great for you.

Camera

Panasonic GH4: This is a great camera that shoots 4K. If you are shoot in 4K, downscale to 1080p, you have the option to reframe and zoom into a closer shot without losing quality. It has a flip out screen so you can see yourself, focus peaking to show you on screen if you're in focus, and can record longer clips (in select modes) than the Canon T3i to make syncing easier. This camera is also great for when you want to deliver in 4K one day.
$1699

AC Power adapter: No worrying about batteries for the indoor shooting. $20

Lens

Panasonic 12-35mm: Versatile lens that gives you great range. $1000

14-42 kit lens: Cheaper alternative. $120

Audio

Zoom H4N: Great recorder for your mics. Monitor each mic's level independently. $250

Rode NTG-2: Shotgun mic. $270

Sennheiser Wireless Lav: Expensive, but great quality. $640

Audio Technica ATR-3350s: Cheap corded lavs with long wires. $30

You'll need one long XLR cable, a light stand to use for the boom, and some kind of shotgun mic shock mount. $60 for all.

Lighting

3-light softbox kit: Great kit, been using it for a year with no issues. I don't use the over head light, as I don't have the space. I can use the light stand to boom or for another light. $170

Neewer CN-160: Small LED light to help light certain situations or to use as a hair light. $30

Tripod

Manfrotto Tripod w/Fluid Head: Great set up, worth the investment, but there are cheaper alternatives. $350

Memory Card

64GB Sandisk Extreme Pro: Great card which will allow for smooth 4K recording. $100

Don't think anyone mentions the A7RII Deal on Amazon

Is this a good deal in 2019? I'm currently on a a6000, and have been wanting to upgrade,

Not sure if this is the chance, or if its not worth in 2019.

u/jtuck25 · 1 pointr/photography

Or this

u/jbeer · 1 pointr/flying

In that price range, you have a couple of options. I would look at the Canon Rebel T6i or the Sony a6000 as your two top choices. Those links offer nice packages in that price range.

I would also look at the used Canon/Sony market for deals on 1-2 year older camera's that offer video. Note the DSLR video is just now getting really good (5DMK4, 1DX2, Sony A7R, etc.) so if you go two generations back, they kind of suck.

DPReview.com is a great site for looking at options... check out this link.

u/dtabitt · 1 pointr/Filmmakers

That's the Sony ALPHA a7sII

This is what I want for $800

I'm confused as can be about all these little variants on the Sony names myself.

EDIT: Yeah. I'm fucking retarded. It's the A7rii is what I'm thinking.

u/alchemeron · 1 pointr/giantbomb

Christ, that's an expensive camera. The quality didn't blow me away, either. Well, the high framerate stuff was really cool. Colors and clarity, less so. Guess it takes some tweaking to get the most out of.

Love the new mic, though. That was great.

u/rrmrrt · 1 pointr/videography
u/djrbx · 1 pointr/Android

The price isn't too bad considering what you get. I'm currently in the market for a new DSLR and waiting for the release of the Note 8. The Sony A7S II is priced at $2700 just for the body and the Note 8 will probably be at around $800 upon release. That's $3500 I'm looking to drop on a phone/DSLR combo. I could buy the RED Hydrogen phone and still have money to spare for lenses and mods for the price of the A7S/Note combo.

u/piorekf · 1 pointr/photography

Panasonic GX85 – awesome camera. Small, light, great image quality, packed with features and really cheap for what it can do. Panasonics are also one of the best cameras if you want to also be filming.

u/APimpNamed-Slickback · 1 pointr/photography

Micro FourThirds is a great system for the situation you're in. Small and compact. Priced affordably. Good video and still image performance. Some pros even use M43 gear.

You can still get the Panasonic GX85 with a lens for under $500 from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/PANASONIC-12-32mm-Stabilization-Display-DMC-GX85KK/dp/B01DOKHSH0

There's another bundle with that camera which has another lens for another $100, highly recommended. I don't have this camera personally, but I have been told it is a great camera for beginners and enthusiasts alike and has great video and still performance.

You certainly don't need a DSLR or even a standalone camera, especially just for posting to social media...but you will get FAR better photos and have FAR more control over a standalone camera.

u/Bro_Dave · 1 pointr/Panasonic_G80_G85

80 and 85 have to do with which market is sold in.

Here's the g85 on Amazon (USA)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M050N05/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_cecgAbK6AJR8Y

I think besides the market origin, the 85 comes setup with NTSC and the 80 had PAL.

I believe they can be changed regardless. But I may be wrong.

u/TygerWithAWhy · 1 pointr/videography

That was extremely helpful! Heres what I've got so far.

I'm torn between the G7 with a 12-140mm lens and the G85 with a 12-60mm lens. They are the exact same price (if I get the G7 with 14-42mm it's half the price) But from what I've read and watched, the G85 only seems marginally better and people say it hums whenever its on. Would getting the older G7 that comes with a better lens be a better purchase? (Links

https://smile.amazon.com/PANASONIC-Mirrorless-12-60mm-Megapixels-DMC-G85MK/dp/B01M050N05/ref=sr_1_3?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1523850414&sr=1-3&keywords=panasonic+g85

G85, then G7) In your opinion, does the newer attributes of the G85 outweigh the much larger range lense of the G7 option? This video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_fjscdhJ0M ) makes the G85 stabilization seem very impressive. But I'm still on the fence, the 140mm capability of the G7 seems like it could remove the need for a long/tight shot lense.

As per the video you linked, I'm looking at getting the rode lavalier that the speaker mentions due to its convenience and price. I also subscribed and will be watching more.

https://smile.amazon.com/Rode-smartLav-Lavalier-Microphone-Smartphones/dp/B00EO4A7L0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523850906&sr=8-3&keywords=rode+lavalier+microphone

And for room/atmosphere sound I was curious if you use a shotgun mic, or a traditional supercardoid boom mic more often if it is attached above the camera.

If there is any way I could repay you for all the help you've given let me know. You've saved me countless hours of research and hundreds (if not thousands) in mis-bought goods. When I got into recording and mixing I spent weeks researching mics and audio interfaces on forums, reviews, and asking people at my university for their opinion; but the information you have imparted has cut this time significantly in my pursuit of filming. Thank you very much.

u/MontyManta · 1 pointr/photography

Sorry I can't give a technical explanation for what I need in a camera, I guess I shouldn't be a beginner. I though giving my ultimate goal IE botanical photography and 3 cameras with lenses and asking if people though any of those combos were better than the others for my purpose was enough.

Also the g85 is under $700 on amazon with the 12-60 mm lens I mentioned in my post. For reference, Amazon's current listing: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M050N05/ref=psdc_3109924011_t2_B079VDF7ZG?th=1

Y'all have so many subreddits and a question thread that I wasn't sure where this would go. I'll delete anything that's in the wrong place!

I'm looking at buying a camera in the next couple of days (actually have been for a few months now, but I'm very indecisive) and am currently looking at the Canon ELPH 300 HS and the Olympus PEN E-Pl1. I'm wondering what you more experienced folks would recommend.

DPreview comparison

Snapsort comparison

Canon on Amazon

Olympus on Amazon (shoot, they were both $10 less last week)

I'm being told to spring for the Olympus for the bigger sensor and the ability to change lenses (a friend has offered to loan me lenses for it), but I'm not sure if it's what I need or overkill. I've photographed a bit, but want to learn and practice more.

If I get the Canon I'll definitely be putting CHDK on it. Would that put it a bit more on par with the Olympus? I'm a little concerned about the stated shutter lag on the Olympus.

Ideally I'd like to order in the next few days so that it can arrive before spring break.

My dad had been dropping hints (not seriously as it turns out) about being interested in photography. I was considering the options for what I might get him. I'm planning on getting a Full Frame body soon, and I could hand him my current camera. He seemed to be wanting one sooner then I would be willing to part with my current Camera. I figured there was at least a 50/50 chance that it wouldn't take and I'd get the camera back. I had decided that I would have prefered a m4/3 system.

Photography is a huge investment, and even with Mirrorless, the ability to invest and retain that investment is a huge deal for me.

I've seen the E-PL1 around for pretty economical prices. I don't know about how well the E-PL1 compares to the NX100, but the options for lenses and the options for bodies is pretty remarkable.

Here is a link for it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-E-PL1-Interchangeable-Digital-Black/dp/B0035LBRJO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347930781&sr=8-1&keywords=Panasonic+EPL-1

Would you consider a Mirrorless System Camera?

The Panasonic GF3 and 14-42 kit lens can be had within your budget:

GF3
Lens

As can the Olympus EPL-3 (which I own):
EPL-3

Both are one generation old, but each is a very good camera, and the Mirrorless system allows you to add better lens as the funds become available.

ETA: Looks like the Sony NEX-3 is also in your budget.

u/Elk_Whisperer · 1 pointr/videography

hohoho, nice

I'm probably going to get it then.

One more question

Would the filters on this: https://www.amazon.com/EOS-70D-Essentials-Replacement-Accessory/dp/B00GXKV2NU/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1473284821&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=canon%2B70d

Go on this?

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Alpha-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera/dp/B007GK50X4

Or would I need something else? I don't actually know if these filters are universal for cameras or if each camera has specific filters, or if this camera uses filters at all (I don't know if lens and filters do the same thing)

u/PhotoVideoSamplesEtc · 1 pointr/videography

It's $1,148 at both Amazon and B&H for the package that includes the 16-50mm lens. Amazon has it in stock. Perhaps sell the lens if you don't want it or want to save money rather then continue waiting until the body only package is in stock.

You were probably looking at the price of just the body from a third party seller. That wasn't directly from Amazon.

u/Rex_Lee · 1 pointr/videography

Well it is selling for $848 on amazon right now, brand new WITH a kit lens...so I am thinking you are not going to get $900 for it.

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Camera-Interchangeable-Digital/dp/B007GK50X4

I guess it depends on where you live, but they are going for $500-$600 on facebook marketplace around me on the low end.

u/truesly1 · 1 pointr/Filmmakers

i'd split the difference and go with a Gh3. for an MFT mount first camera, i wouldn't worry about going crazy with lens quality. a kit lens will serve you fine for a while and when you upgrade your camera in the future, you may be going S35, APS-C or FullFrame, in which case your MFT glass wouldn't fit. i recommend grabbing the 14-140 kit lens, the 20mm pancake (roughly $400 each) then grab an e-image tripod

> Other cameras that have been recommended to me are the black magic cinema camera and the canon 7D

having owned the 7D, BMCC,and Gh4 i feel like I've trained my life to answer this! :)
the Gh4 is not great in low light by cinema standards, but its better than the BMCC or the 7D. the 7D and Gh3 are on par while the BMCC's low sensitivity and small sensor make it crap for low light.

with the GH3 and GH4 you get 1080/60p but the 7D is only 720/60p and the BMCC has no slomo.

the BMCC is a bitch of a camera ergonomically and it is a little finicky in its function.

the GH3/4 both have way more video minded features than the 7D (zebras, peaking, audio levels, histogram, etc.)

if you like the video that you get from a 7D, buy a t3i instead. it's the exact same sensor, but a cheaper body. then you could spend your money on EF mount glass which is more likely to stick with you when you upgrade (even if it's not canon brand)

u/KyleSamaSensei · 1 pointr/Cameras

Panasonic GH3. I'm about to purchase one for myself after doing a metric butt-ton of research and it seems like the best camera under $1000 (body only) for shooting some high quality footage. It has 60fps in 1080p and some slo-motion options as well.

u/cocomojo4991 · 1 pointr/Cameras

Does it have to be a camcorder? And is your budget strictly for a camera, or does it include all accessories, as well?

The BlackMagic Cinema Camera is $2,995, but you'd need to spend some extra cash on related gear.

If you're not opposed to using a DSLR, I'd recommend either a 5DmkII or a Panasonic GH3. There's some other options, but those are good ways to go, in my opinion.

Note, however, the BMCC requires a good deal of consideration, especially if you choose to shoot RAW.

u/CricketPinata · 1 pointr/Filmmakers

Here are some cameras i'm used or that i've worked with footage from that are in the "affordable" range I think. This is a decent cross-section I think of a lot of the DSLR and Camcorders out there.

It really depends on if you just want a really basic camcorder to just use as a learning platform (I would consider a used DVX or something if that's the case), or if it's something you want to try to use as a professional rig, and if so what do you want to do with it? Narrative work, documentaries, videography work?

Depending on what you're planning some cameras on this list will be good choices, some will be bad.

If you don't mind spending more, maybe think about the Panasonic AF100, or consider looking into the Black Magic: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/855879-REG/Blackmagic_Design_BMD_CINECAM26KEF_Cinema_Camera.html

Or maybe even a used Scarlet or something.

Hello all, going to purchase my first ever camera (besides what I've been using with my smartphone) and I've decided to get a mirrorless camera since they are compact yet produce good quality photos from what I've read.

I've narrowed it down between the NX 1100 http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-NX1100-Digital-Camera-20-50mm/dp/B00CEH9NFU and the Sony NEX 3N http://www.amazon.com/Sony-NEX-3NL-Compact-Interchangeable-Digital/dp/B00BF9MUBM .

Does anyone have experience with both or either one and can help me make a decision? The Sony 3N is about $60-80 more than the NX1100

u/SgtSwordfish · 1 pointr/photography

haha, understand this a lot better now. thanks so much man! definitely getting the sony in that case.

sorry about this though: one last question.

amazon has something called the nex 3nl/b...is that the same as the nex 3n? http://www.amazon.com/Sony-NEX-3NL-Compact-Interchangeable-Digital/dp/B00BF9MUBM/

also i was thinking about getting it on ebay or something used...it would save me $100...would it be worht it?

u/13jpgbass · 1 pointr/Cameras

If you're willing to spend a little more money I'd go with the sony nex-3n. It will provide you with great pictures, as well as advanced features should you wish to expand your horizons.

u/charlesviper · 1 pointr/photography

GoPros have a very distinct semi-fisheye lens that are great for sport but not that great for...your face.

I'd recommend a point and shoot (mirrorless if you can stretch the budget a little) with a mini-tripod.

Something like this with a few spare batteries.

u/higher_moments · 1 pointr/Cameras

When I was in the market for my first "nice" camera without breaking the bank six months ago, the consensus seemed to be that the Sony NEX-3N is the best value in the under-$500 range. Having owned that camera since then, I can say it was worth every penny. With an APS-C sensor (same size as the pricier entry-level dSLRs) and a decent kit lens, I think camera takes pretty respectable pictures (here's one of my favorites, with a bit of RAW editing) and offers as much manual control as you want.

The low price comes at the expense of a few features found on more expensive cameras, perhaps most notably a viewfinder and hot shoe, though this has never really bothered me. I can tell that I'm going to enjoy these sorts of features when I'm willing to spend more on a camera, but in the meantime, I'm satisfied with the control and image quality I have now.

I know Sony has been revamping/replacing the NEX line recently—Amazon reports that the NEX-3N has been upgraded to the a5000, which offers a few more features for a bit more money—so it'd certainly worth doing some research to find the version that fits your budget and your needs. At any rate, I think the Sony mirrorless cameras fit the bill quite well in this price range.

I'm using this lens and this camera.

u/Fantasy000 · 1 pointr/SonyAlpha

Nope. You can buy an A7 for $798 brand new on Amazon.

It's a black friday sale.

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Full-Frame-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera/dp/B00FRDUZXM/ref=sr_1_2?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1511157133&sr=1-2&keywords=sony+a7

So even if you bought that one used and pay 200-300 for a viewfinder repair, you'll probably be paying $700 for a used and repaired camera with who knows how many shutter counts.

Holy shit, thats amazing.

Wait, so this can take video like that out of the box?!

Yes, I actually ended up figuring this out yesterday. Here's how I ended up doing it:

The body is $1000 new, so that seems like a good deal, if that's what you want. A couple of lenses and you'll be down another $500 or more.

But it sounds like the Sony might make more sense to you.

Hey!

If your looking for a great camera that can do both photos and video I would recommend the sony a6000

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Digitial-3-0-Inch-16-50mm/dp/B00I8BICB2

It has great image and video quality for the price point and you could pair it with DJI ronin S https://www.amazon.com/DJI-Essentials-Stabilizer-Mirrorless-CP-RN-00000033-01/dp/B07R88FBRH/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=ronin+s&qid=1559149661&s=electronics&sr=1-4

Ha totally! I'm probably as full of myself as much as I hate myself. But let me give you the rundown and go in detail:

First - I saw the caption. I stand by what I said about it. Language, man, it's nuanced and important. At first I was certain the piece wasn't yours, especially because it's pretty good.

So - I reverse-imaged your artwork. I glanced through a bunch of deleted reddit threads without any leads until I saw the booty blog. OH SNAP! It's ON now, bitch (was the mentality that motivated me). I went back to the threads, saw the accusations of you being racist, and really flipped my shit. That's the kind of hypocrisy that goes far deeper than race or prejudice. I had to really hit home and hit deep with what I say.

My fury was fierce yet the trail was running cold... At this point all I know is the blog I saw, the post in /r/blackladies, your initials and that you moved to Tampa... Until I saw your web links in the lower left corner of your piece. Again, man - language! The art of? /u/comradepyro said it best - > Bit of an ego there, mate. Anyway, that's how I see your portfolio, CV, etc. It was kind of a thrill, I've never felt like a private eye before! I'm also shocked at how much I found out... Please take this as a wake up call on online privacy! I'm actually a bit freaked out. I've never just "Googled" someone so extensively. Be really careful with any bits of info. I can PM you the details of what else I found if you want.

/u/HarlequinForestFairy said that I "hate you so much" - you pissed me off; there's a difference. And you continue to do it! The way you use language is political - not in terms of Republican/Democrat but in the context of Slavoj Zizek's Violence. I generally agree with you but I'm irritated by the way you say it.

> A person does not truly value their humanity until they experience it being taken away from them.

Totally. Please read Violence though and think about the word "humanity". Selfishness - yeah. By the way, did you know that our species can be traced back to the first hominoid that did not abandon its sick and elderly? Suffering - mmmhhmmm. Kafka, Nietzsche, Van Gogh, so on and so on. Suffering is an odd thing for sure. Is David Foster Wallace less of a writer because his suffering was mental and emotional? See what I mean? "Dehumanization" is one bitch of a word.

I've had a pretty comfortable life. Off the top of my head, I probably experienced 5 "tragedies" (more like first-world problems).

  1. A dog I used to play with attacked a stray cat and her newborn litter when I was 6 yo. I grabbed a stick and started hitting the dog but at the same time I didn't want to hurt him. He just ignored me and kept snapping the kitten's necks. The and ambiguous morality was devastating.

  2. I became aware of myself within my body and began resenting my parents for giving me the pain of consciousness.

  3. My grandfather died.

  4. I read about subjective vs. objective.

  5. I saw that many of my classmates were content within the "Theater" and that our paths would go different ways.

Lol. Boohoo. I'm a lucky fuck but the sad lil' ENFP within doesn't appreciate it enough and likes to bitch instead. But you sort of proved my point right there and then...

TL;DR: I'm not hating on your art so don't feel the need to defend it. I'm criticizing your self-importance.

    Anyway,

    Good luck.

  • Mid-cheap: Canon 60D - I have the cheaper version of this one. The skin tones are really good and the colors are robust. If you have any moving shots, you need the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS. It's the one I have and it's amazing at 24mm and up. You need a constant F# for video, otherwise the aperture (and exposure) will change if you zoom in low light. If it's mostly steady shots and indoors, get the new 24mm f2.8 STM. If that's too expensive, get this Pentax SMC 50mm 1.7 and a Fotodiox Pentax-K to EOS adapter (I've got this one too, I love it, but direct sunlight will give you lots of flare). And you can always pick up a kit lens used from eBay or KEH.com for shits and giggles.

  • Cheapest: Sony NEX-3N THIS IS SO CHEAP! WTF?? Old but great camera. You can get reaaally nice and cheap Canon FD glass for it and an FD to MFT adapter. Only look at primes - 24mm or 28mm / 50mm / 135mm @ f2.8 or lower. You can also get a Metabones SpeedBooster later on. Heads up: The smaller the camera sensor, the "bigger" it makes each lens. The Canon 60D has an APS-C sensor with a 1.6x crop factor which makes a 28mm roughly 45mm. The Micro-Four/Thirds have an even smaller one that varies between 2x and 3x. I think the NEX-3n is 3x.

  • Baller 4K: Panasonic GH4 I know nothing about this camera except that everyone's crazy about it.

I started photography with this bundle. Still using the same kit and made my money back from it within a month doing odd jobs for different companies. The 6500 is relatively expensive and it does the same job as a6000 (bar built in stabilization) with this bundle and a gimbal you’re basically set.

A6300 is a great camera, but it isn't full-frame. If you are looking for something in the Sony realm, I would suggest the the Sony A7. It's $998 or about $800-850 used. For a little bit more, you can also get the 24-70mm kit lens, which is a great focal length for landscapes. As far as the macro lens, the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8-22 Macro G OSS is incredibly sharp. The Sony 30mm f/3.5 is a pretty good option too.
