Your opiate point also reminds me of something I went through: opioid-induced hyperalgesia. Basically, with long term opiate use, the thing that's supposed to treat pain causes you more pain and makes you hypersensitive to stimuli.
Also, I went to let you know you can get one for $25 on Amazon for yourself, aswell as enough pads for a very long time for $20. Make them last by not changing the pads very often, even when they loose stickiness they still have the conductive gel so I use cheap medical tape to stick them on.
I just picked a Tens unit that was being sold by amazon. They all have 2 leeds with 2 pads per leed. Then I purchased an extra electrode pad set of 20 for $15.
