I would also recommend a Harmony hub and remote ($80ish) to consolidate your remotes and also make the switching seamless.

I use an HDMI switch. It strips the audio from HDMI and sends it to optical while forwarding the video to HDMI out. Most receivers do this as well so it's not a surprise that most TVs don't.

I'm sure someone will think of a much better solution than any of these ridiculous ones, but:

You could remote desktop into your PC from your phone/tablet. (If you have an nVidia GTX card, Moonlight for Android is ideal)
Alternatively if you have a spare HDMI port on your monitor you could get a Chromecast and cast to that from the Youtube app?
Alternatively if you don't have a spare HDMI port on your monitor, you could get a HDMI auto-switcher box (Amazon sell them...)
Alternatively you could get a HDMI capture card for your PC and plug the Chromecast into that (this is getting ridiculous though)

I have a Samsung TV from 2008. I bought an HDMI audio extractor. I have linked the one I bought below. You can get this or others. The set up will be all your inputs to this device. The HDMI output goes to TV. The optical goes to the playbase. The one issue is that when you turn off the TV, you need to turn this off as well otherwise the audio continues to play.
