Canon makes a pretty nice IR remote that clips neatly to the neck strap. I believe it works on all rebels but double check.

They are for flashes but have remote shutter capability too.

Right, but it doesn't allow for a half-press, sorta like the main camera shutter button? I use a pair of Yongnuo 603s as both wireless flash + shutter trigger, and the button has a half-press which will autofocus (if I have my camera settings to do so) before fully depressing it.
