Great rug! I saw in the comments that you are willing to get rid of the big chair, I think that it would be best to do so. The furniture is too big for the space. Below I put some links for chair suggestions. I also saw that you want lighting suggestions so also put pairings together.

I would also suggest maybe painting the wall behind the couch to help make it pop. If you do get rid of the chair, the couch you need to center on the wall along with the coffee table and have a chair or two in the other side on an angle to it can be a more social space.

I was thinking about that as well since it's hard finding space to hangout when friends/family are over. I was also thinking about moving the bookshelf by the window somewhere else and putting a small couch there, though I'm not sure if that would make the room too cluttered. I know a guy who can get me a discount on a lot of electronics, I call him first, get hooked up with two smart bulbs $85, a projector $92, and speakers $140. I'm figuring also $50 for cables.


Other than the wall the projector is going to be on, which I'm leaving white, paint all the other walls with black chalkboard paint. I'm gonna figure this at about $40, 1 can of paint that covers 110 square feet is $10 on Walmart.com. Black walls is pretty retro futuristic dystopia, and now we can draw or write on them, which is good for making things. I'll also be on the lookout for a large flat piece of scrap metal to mount on the wall for magnetic haikus and "filing" printouts. Take apart old hard drives for free magnets.

I'm going to use scrounged furniture for any other furniture in the room. I'll probably start applying the leftover blackboard paint to it, to give it all a uniform appearance, and run out halfway through, and then spend $10-$25 on another can or two of paint and some sandpaper.


I'll spend $90 on 3 smart plugs, then purchase a $20 electric kettle, a $30 electric rice cooker. Now I have the ability to not stop working to make instant noodles.

If this is a bedroom, substitute the fainting couch for a cheap memory foam mattress and some printed sheets that I'll probably buy at Target with cartoon characters on them.

So, this is a weird question, but is this your futon? I've been debating buying it (broke grad student) and was wondering how comfy it is.

It's the Emily Futon. They look great and are cheap, but I'd be lying if I said they were very comfortable. I'd put it on par with other futons. It is nice to have as a sleeping place for guests though.

That was the futon I had for 2 years before the new one. There's also a burgundy velvet option for $40 more. While it's not as comfy, it still looked good. Great bang for the buck.

I don't like it because I can already feel the springs but for the price it's good for overnight guests. One or two nights is fine. The backrest side is the cushy side.

Oo cool, thanks a lot! I think that couch looks pretty good. I was considering something like this for a futon (the gray color). I've moved a lot and I guess in my mind it'd be more portable than having a couch for when I move again, but after moving my roommate's futon this week I could be wrong.

It's called "Emily futon". I have two of them and they suck hardcore. They look great but so uncomfortable that in two years of ownership I probably used them less than 10 times.


Each futon is divided into 4 separate sections, but it's cheaply made so you can feel the frame around each section when you sit or lay on it.
