We don't have wire crates anymore because almost any dog we've had can/has busted out! We have a hard plastic shell type crate (there is ventilation and the door is still wire-type) that we are currently using while our ~70lb dog is on crate rest due to surgery. The only issue we've had so far is that because it's a hard plastic shell (even with ventilation) air doesn't move through it as nice as we'd like. Especially with the random hotter days we've had.

We do use the zipties to keep the top and bottom together as they are easily removed by us to clean the crate, they're on the outside so that our big girl can't get at them, and cheap (hello dollar store!)

If you can't get a different type of crate, maybe remove the bottom tray (if yours has one), put a soft bed in the crate and a blanket over top the crate to cover it. Having a dark, safe place to hide may be what your pup wants/needs.

Also - we give our big girl a kong filled with frozen treats (regular plain yogurt mostly). This occupies her time for the most part trying to lick it all out. She's too busy getting all the treats so she doesn't think about getting out.

There are other options (DAP collar, thunder shirts, separation anxiety music (no joke - youtube it!)) that you can utilize.

As other posters said, start from scratch. Maybe buy a new crate.

Our dog was so bad that she chewed her way out of two different heavy duty plastic ones and would bend the wire ones to escape.

We tried just leaving her out but she destroyed a lot of our stuff and chewed up my rug :(

We bought a heavy duty metal one like linked below, put it in a different spot of the house and HOLY CRAP.

We dont know if it's the elevation, the fact that the cage is sturdier, or changing the location, but it completely changed her attitude on being crated. We put in a crate pad from Costco and give her 2 to 3 stuffed treats, and she settles right in and doesnt whine. If she's home alone with our roommate, she goes and lays in it.

With time, on days she had a lot of playtime and a long walk, we started leaving her out to run to the grocery store (we'd make like 6 to 7 stuffed treat toys and place them all in her crate but not close her in).

Now we're up to 4 to 5 hour blocks of time with only 2 stuffed toys and no issues and I'm feeling pretty confident that she is almost ready for a full work day.

We do close our window blinds while gone as occasionally the outside world makes her anxious and she's more likely to chew... but we've forgotten before and she's been ok.

SO THERE IS STILL HOPE. be patient!

I've also linked the toys that we bought several of and then stuff with treats from costco for our pup. They've lasted surprisingly well for her, though you can tell they've been well loved. I just bought a couple replacements this week

Our guy had similar issues. He would break out of his kennel and scratch up his face and destroy our carpet. We ended up getting him this kennel and it was night and day. We put a comfortable bed in there and he loves it. He also knows that he can’t get out either so he doesn’t try. (He tried the first time then realized it’s too difficult to get out haha)
Whenever we leave we put on ambient noise (like a tv, or music) and i fill the black Extreme Kong up with a couple of treats and some peanut butter. If i know when I’m going to leave I’ll put it in the freezer so it lasts longer for him. Hopefully this helps or gives you some ideas. I know how frustrating it can be when you just want the best for your buddy.

If your cool with online shopping this one has a bunch of sizes and is plane travel approved. I didn't buy the huge one but the medium I have is pretty good.

We own a plastic type crate. There’s a metal gate door and the rest is plastic. There’s a few different styles with various windows or extra doors. Unfortunately, it’s a pain to move or store when you don’t need it. Advantage it’s the same one that airplanes approve of.

This being said we don’t use it often maybe once a month. It was bought for our first pup with quickly out grew the XXL and neither pup have any issues just hanging out in the living room together.

Ours was an escape artist too, kept destroying his crates. We finally decided to buy an industrial one and it's the best thing ever!

I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LYJ566M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They have various sizes and the small is just large enough to cover my gcc's cage. It's a nice and thick, opaque material with a little handle on top. The two side panels and the rear panel are all attached to one another, but the front is a loose flap that hangs down over the front of the cage, so you can lift it up to easily access the cage

u/chantillylace9 · 2 pointsr/duck

Well, I rescued a baby duckling and had to figure this out pretty much on my own because there’s not many resources about indoor ducks.

Backyard chickens is a great forum that I would definitely recommend joining.

I use this dog kennel:

https://www.amazon.com/Advantek-Original-Pet-Gazebo-Medium/dp/B0076DLUHQ

Since it does not have a bottom, I took a tarp, and use bungee cords attached all around the bottom to hold it up. You put the bungee cords around the outside of the kennel wrapped all the way around, connected to one another.

That works really well. Then, when you need to clean the cage, you can just empty out the entire tarp to the garbage. I replace the tarp every few months, but in theory if you really wanted to spend the time, you could clean it.

We use pellet pine bedding for horses. Everything else saying to make the older much worse.

You definitely want to find some duck diapers, if you PM me, I can send you some links. You use feminine pads, the biggest, thickest ones you can find, inside of the diaper and you change it about once an hour.

Make sure to give them a bath every day, and keep an eye on them because the new ducklings are not as waterproof as you would think.

Good luck! You can always contact me if you have questions.

Doggyride stroller could do it (the original is rated for up to 100lbs but I wouldn't go over 85), and then it could be locked like a bike at the station while you're out and about. Perfect solution? No, but it would get the job done :) If you had to TTC to the Go station though that would be a problem, I don't think you're getting one of those bad boys on a streetcar, they're sizeable. Would serve Go Transit right though (because the dog alone would take up about 1/3 the space but hey, you want everybody in a crate? Ok then!), I would love to see a whack of large dog strollers stage a sit-in on a Sunday haha.

Edited to add: oops forgot that someone I know, a service dog handler, uses a sport crate sometimes for her large German shepherd. It's a "Sport Pet", like this: https://www.amazon.com/POP-OPEN-DOG-KENNEL-X-LARGE/dp/B003Y2KZEM

Bogey's kennel is like this one. He weighs 48 pounds (~22 kg).

u/Wendeli · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

He needs a heavy duty metal crate (https://www.amazon.com/SmithBuilt-Large-Heavy-Duty-Crate-Cage/dp/B00KGDX6VQ), not a wire crate. You should also talk to a trainer about how to manage the separation anxiety.

I would specifically purchase the Variocage trunk barrier-style system if I were in your situation. The Variocage is expensive at >$1000. If this option is cost prohibitive, I've outlined lots of info about the other options in this thread including harnesses here and here as well as crates here.

My recommendation is to place the dog in the front seat with either the Sleepypod Click-it (any size dog) or a Ruff Wear Load-up harness (small dogs only bc it fails certification with med and large dogs). Combine this with training to ensure the dog stays in position and doesn't cause a crash from distracting you as the driver. This would provide the optimal level of safety to the dog while prioritizing the safety of the children in the backseat, who face significant dangers from:

  1. Projectiles including the crate itself
  2. Projectiles from [failed crate parts] (https://vimeo.com/133808147)
  3. The [dog as a projectile] (https://vimeo.com/133808345)
  4. The crash-test certified crate that successfully protects your dog from the initial impact of a rear-end collision, only to get pushed forward and into the back of the rear-passenger seat by the impacting vehicle, causing injury to the rear passengers, as demonstrated in this simulation. The successful crate reduces your vehicle's "effective crumple zone," something that doesn't happen with the Variocage barrier system or a dog harnessed appropriately in the front seat.

    P.S.Obviously avoid booster seats !

It looks a little weird but on really nice days I use these to give my snakes a taste of the outdoors and a little sunlight. I have two of these pens and they zip completely closed so I don't have to worry about the snake going for a wander or getting into something that might be dangerous.

They are great for hanging out on the porch or yard, just add somewhere for the snake to get out of the sunlight and keep your snakes natural behaviour in mind. A corn snake will probably love being outside but a ball python would not be too happy with the bright light and open space.

Those pens also make great places to put snakes when we are cleaning the tubs out.

u/timberwolfeh · 1 pointr/dogs

You have a screened in porch - is it attached to a yard, or even a bit of yard?

Basically would you be able to put in a dog run/kennel like this one? The obviously come in different sizes, but are usually big enough to put in a heated dog house if you wanted, or one properly insulated and lined with hay, etc as well as food and water and enough room to potty without walking/laying in it.

u/wuselfuzz · 1 pointr/Rabbits

In Germany, I got them from Amazon. They were not called X-Pens, but it's the same.

I don't know any spanish, so I can't search there. =)

u/goldfish_king · 1 pointr/dogs

Not really. He's a lazy little guy and we go for a walk at lunchtime and have potty breaks and coffee breaks. He has toys and chew things and a popup crate. Sometimes coworkers cruise by and pet him.

I'd say his tolerance for sitting quietly working is about the same as mine -- when I'm like I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE LET'S GO OUTSIDE it's usually a good time for him too.

u/SillyNluv · 1 pointr/DIY

Why? It’s a good use of space in a small area. Assuming the dog would be crated when the people are away from home or asleep.

I have this one. It's 28 x 20.5 x 21.5 inches. It's comically too large - my corgi right now is about 4 months old so do you think the 24" would be too small? She seems a bit small but I'm not sure how small the 24" would be
