As a pet owner, this is the best purchase I have made. Our one cat had issues with the couch too, and this is the only thing that got the smell out. It is super loud, but it's been nothing but reliable for the last two years.
Also we have these (I couldn't find a UK link, but maybe you can find something similar) and we keep them on our couch when we're not around. We haven't had an accident since.

I agree with the other posters. Your guests shouldn't have left the dog with you and you shouldn't have picked him up. Imagine if someone you didn't know wanted you to move and picked you up. You'd feel threatened. It sounds like you're not really a dog person, so it would be a good idea for you to stop accepting dogs. Many dogs are used to being on the couch at home. It's confusing to them that the rules are different in your house. If you keep permitting dogs you should get some of these.

Not really what you asked, but I got one of these to keep the dogs off our sofa. We have the dogs trained to not get on the sofa without permission when we're home, but when we're gone all bets are off. The sofa scram works, but you do have to remember to put it on the sofa.

The acrylic is harder because I'm guessing you don't have a way to cut a sheet of the stuff. You could get it custom but that would be super expensive.
