~ Skip ahead to bullets if you like, felt a preface was in order. ~

Welp, I guess I’ll go for it. I’ll be brief on each point, but I’d be happy to expand/link studies for anyone interested.

I do have a bio degree / STEM background and put a lot of research, time and trial-&-error into my “plan.” Some of it came from doctors, some stuff I just tried and it worked. Everything I will list has some research backing why it would affect cognition or mood (usually comes down to hormones).

Also, PSA: I have a genetic disorder and this is not a one-size-fits-all deal. Each person should prob take a hard look at their diet, overall health and genetics when changing nutrition for mental health.

Phew! Here we go:

  • I take this fish oil, 1 pill/day (at night after dinner). Got better mood results taking the recommended 2/day split up 12 hrs apart, but it gave me bile attacks/threw off my hormones cuz too much fat for me.
  • 400 IU Vit D (morning)
  • 100mg calcium + 100mg magnesium mixed w/ 45mcg Vit K2 in water (at night w/ fish oil)
  • 1/2 Tbsp gelatin in smoothies
  • Fixed Vit B deficiencies - I have MTHFR and needed converted methyl folate (I take 200mg/day since I am the genetic variant that can get some from food), I also take methylated B12 2-3x week (1,000mcg sublingual spray)
  • Eat 3-6 servings green veggies each day (w/ variety: spinach & Swiss chard in smoothie, asparagus w/ lunch, broccoli w/ dinner, etc.)
  • Replaced almost all processed sugar w/ fruit, some ones I believe are nutrient dense: kiwis, berries, grapes
  • Cut down on coffee: took a one month break as an experiment, I believe too much caffeine (90mg+/day) was yo-yoing both my blood sugar and neurotransmitters
  • Addressed my insulin resistance: I am lean and athletic, but still couldn’t handle 30g+ sugar/day
  • Maintain carbs 30-50g/day and minimal-modest fat intake and modest protein intake; I tried keto and it fucked my mood up big time, the excess fat messed w/ my hormones (this was even after doing it for a while, excess fat raises estrogen) (BUT! Brain and nerves need fat too, don’t over-restrict) (Variety of fats good: a little animal fat, the fish oil + GLA omega-6s inc. in the one I linked, olive oil for cooking, etc.)
  • Got on a simple electrolyte supplement and drink tons of water all throughout the day, I don’t chug but I am never even close to dehydrated
  • Stopped letting my blood sugar drop, take snacks always
  • BONUS: I take 250mg grape seed extract for my battle w/ Candida overgrowth and my poor circulation ... I think it may have helped a smidge and it lowers blood sugar, so it cancels that “spike” I’d normally get w/ my bfast

    Also, sleeeep. I have a sleep disorder and sometimes, I have to sleep 10 hrs if I had a bad night or two. A lot of people think depression is sleeping too much ... the opposite can also be true. Quality > quantity sleep.

    Oh, and I exercise often. I did OK sedentary three months this year after major surgery, but I feel much better lifting 2-3x week, cardio 1-2x and HIIT 1-2x.

eh, basically 4 ingredients.

  1. meal replacement powder (basically gives me about 30-40% of daily vitamin requirements). I use a local store brand but Slim-Fast or Nutri-bar work. Dry powder is about 100 calories, along with about 15% of daily fiber.

  2. Muscle mlik (lean) - mostly whey protein (16g), but also gives a relatively balanced amount of vitamins (bumps the total vitamin amount to about 50%) and calories/fat (150)

  3. Hemp Protein (provides a 50% of your daily fiber requirements, and also a good amount of protein (11g) and 130 calories.

  4. milk. about 750mL of homogenized (3.25% fat) milk. That's a big chunk, about 450 calories, 24g of protein, and obviously calcium and vitamins.

    i use a 1L water bottle. 1 scoop of each powder, milk until it's not quite full, shake it up and go.

    total: around 830 calories, 65% of your daily fiber requirements, 50g of protein (which is 100% of your daily requirement if you're not a pro athlete) from 2 sources (cows and hemp plants), 50% of all vitamins and minerals. Basically equivalent to 2 Soylent meals (each soylent meal is only 25% of daily requirements). For the extra calories, it isn't hard - eat junk food or whatever the hell you like.

    The nutrition powder i use is based on soy, so technically i'm getting nutrients from 3 sources (soy, cows, hemp) but if you can't take soy, there's still options.

    In the end it's basically just looking at the nutrition label, and adding the numbers together. That's all Soylent really is, too. Just in a more convenient package.

I believe the reason people take fish oil is for the omega fatty acids. These also naturally occur in other foods, it just happens to be very abundant in fish oil. Amazon has some vegan options which are about the same price or cheaper compared to the fish oil options, but you might be able to find vegan options at a natural food store/pharmacy as well.

Its really hard, i completely understand. You are not a lost cause, there is something out there that will work for you, you just have to find it. Also be sure to work on identifying any lifestyle factors that may be contributing. This includes physical health issues such as vitamin D deficiency, thyroid hormone imbalance, vitamin/mineral deficiency, lack of omega 3s in your diet (a person with depression should be taking 1-2g of a high quality omega 3 supplement daily (with a meal) which contains roughly around 60% EPA, 40% DHA. heres one that fits that description, a person with depression should take 3 per day. For those people (like myself) who eat a plant based diet, i take these which are omega 3s extracted from algae (fish have omega 3s because they eat algae). I also take a vitamin D3 supplement daily because i can't get enough sun naturally, and i keep a calcium/magnesium/zinc complex and multi-vitamin in my cabinet to take a few times a week on those days when I have been really busy and haven't had time to eat until i get home late, and know that the one meal I'm having cant provide me with everything i need so I'll take some calcium and a multi after dinner to just throw in some of those important minerals and vitamins that my brain/body need to keep itself running smoothly.

I know my diet isn’t amazing so I typically take a multi vitamin, iron supplement, vegan omega 3 supplement, vegan D3 supplement, and biotin (for non health related reasons).

I think I got that wrong. Hemp Oil Extract . Don't think this one has any CBD in it. Amazon doesn't sell any CBD items. Although the plant itself does have CBD. But if its seed oil it should be good.

That's weird. Maybe it's actually an allergy to fish protein in the omega-3 oil.

You could try vegan omega-3 made from algae, and see if you still have a reaction. Seeds and nuts are allergenic anyway, so it's hard to tell from that.

Calcium

Since you'll be cutting dairy from your diet I advise you to put some plant-based milk as a replacement. You'll have no qualms with calcium and plant-based milks are fortified with several vitamins and micronutrients.

Overall:

Although people talk a lot about the difficulty of getting other nutrients, I think it's super difficult to have problems with any other nutrient. To have a better idea, get an app called "cronometer" to monitor you micros and if you just eat normally you'll see that's almost impossible to have problems with other nutrients. You should also check out Dr. Greger "daily dozen" app.

Personally, I don't take omega-3 supplements just ALA everyday and I eat fortified foods and sometimes I just eat a B12 gummybear for safety.

I bought a big pack of generic maternity pads off of Amazon, so that's my main plan. My doula recommended Depends or something similar, but she also hated the hospital mesh PP underwear, and some people seem to love it. The pads should be good enough, but I won't know what I like until I'm there.

Besides drinking more than enough water, this looks like it can be a problem with not getting enough EFA's(essential fatty acids) or a problem processing fats. I would have her take three of these (https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Plus-Youngevity-soft-gels/dp/B005CK86XQ/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1478718907&sr=8-1&keywords=efa+plus) with each meal. This is an internal problem, not an external. Get her on vitamin A (around 20,000IU/Day) as well. I used these to get rid of some dry patches that I had and it worked great. I'm wondering about her diet as well.

Here's one vegan omega-3 supplement

I think it's possible to go without a B complex, but I supplement advice from a trusted friend, a Phd MD neurologist who noted that a large number of his vegetarian or vegan patients came to him because of conditions caused by B9 deficiency. I don't know if that's the case, but I've been taking it since then.
