I got a "Super Eyes" similar to this one while I was in Shenzhen. The software on Windows is decent. OSX requires you to just use Photo Booth, so you can't adjust the resolution or anything. I got mine for $50, I wouldn't recommend it at the Amazon price.

Thats a cheap chinese Otoscope bought off Amazon. Medicine isn't in the dark ages because that Nurse or Doctor was cheap, instead of buying a high quality Welch Allyn

I use weigh paper, but it's an awfully small target you're shooting for. That's why I use an otoscope cover as a funnel. Thanks, r/nootropics.

Something simple, lets talk about a kids ear infection.

As a parent with kids that get ear infections, I already know what the problem is (Hell, I even have an Otoscope to confirm myself to save a trip to the doctor if I'm wrong).

I need a $5 antibiotic. But to get that I need a prescription - Which means I need to go to a clinic and see a doctor or someone who can give me that prescription.

Thats a $75 bill - IF I go to a clinic/doctor that my insurance covers. If I go to a doctor that my insurance doesn't cover it can easily be $400.

Honestly, I don't get to check it very often because he won't let me. He's fine when a doctor does it but I can barely put it in before he swats me away. The one I got has a little picture chart to compare to, so that was nice. I think they key is to do it semi often, even when they're not sick, so you get some practice and know what it's supposed to look like and the kiddos get used to it. The one I'm linking came with 2 different sized disposable tips for adults and kids and was $40 but you can get different ones by the same company (Dr. Mom) for cheaper.

My LO is only three months, but my SIL with a 4 year old and 22 month old suggested I invest now in an ear scope like this one so that you can take a peek at home and if you see inflammation take him in to the doctor. If not, then you can feel more assured that he doesn't have an ear infection and he's just dealing with a cold, and since a cold is a virus all you can do is treat the symptoms anyway you're already doing what you can. She said it was also really useful for teething - one of her sons would only have a fever with an ear infection so this helped her know if his fever was an ear infection or teething.

Decongestants. Heat on that side. Either a thermophore (moist heat), or a warm washcloth. That's if you actually have congestion in them. If they just feel stopped up, but aren't really - not sure what to tell you.

Also, get one of these. Obviously, you can't use it on yourself, but if you have a partner or friend who is willing to help you out, you can learn to see for yourself (secondhand, lol) what's really going on in there when you feel stopped up. I got one years ago to verify for myself what was going on when my kids were getting cranky or misbehaving - can't tell you how often it was because they had an ear infection, but weren't displaying typical pain or fever symptoms.

Last year Amazon had this as a set with both oto/opth, but now it only has one unfortunately. Regardless, works great for me, and much more affordable than most. Also, check with upperclassmen- people often get rod of theirs for cheap in later years.

I really like this otoscope. It is small and fits in my pocket easily. The light is really bright too. The only downside is that the light is a little different color than your typical welch allyn otoscope (more blue), but it still works great! https://www.amazon.com/Generation-Dr-Mom-Otoscope-Disposable/dp/B00AJDZJCW/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1481424196&sr=8-1&keywords=dr+mom+otoscope

You can buy an otoscope for less than $20 and check her ears yourself. Between two kids it saved us a TON of trips to the doctor when we weren't sure.

My hybrid program requires them as well. They are great for practicing these skills before you go on campus.

I got these:

They seemed to get the job done. I will say that the otoscope isn’t great but from what I’ve read is without spending A LOT of money the quality won’t be great.

Good luck.

I bought one of these for a bit more, the base is cheap but its much smaller than those ones. Its also a true 5mp sensor not interpolated.

For soldering its more than adequate. in mjpg mode the update delay is basically non existent and updates at 30fps or so.

I had a toy microscope as a kid -- it was a fun idea but not so good since seeing truly small things well requires more budget. I'm now in a business where microscopy is critical and have some nice hardware I can use to see truly small things, but there's a lot of fun in looking at larger objects. This can be done with cheap hardware and I use an older pen-style scope like what you posted even for "serious" business-related work (https://www.amazon.com/Supereyes-Portable-Microscope-Endoscope-Magnifier/dp/B0066H7H1Q ). These come with software a lot of the time but it's maybe not very good, so I use something called "SharpCap" which is meant for astronomy but is actually just an easy program to display USB camera images in real time so it works nicely for USB camera microscopy. I'd recommend getting this kind of setup (USB camera that plugs into a computer for display) since the display will be nicer and my instinct is that 80 dollars/euros is too little for a microscope/display/storage/stage that will work to anyone's satisfaction.

I found this one on Amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/Opti-Tekscope-Microscope-Advanced-Definition-Industrial/dp/B0184CCOY0/ref=sr_1_10?keywords=usb+microscope&qid=1567129440&s=gateway&sr=8-10 ). It has LED lighting (important for illuminating objects from the top) and looks solid, with metal construction that seems nicer than the one I have. Something like this would plug into a computer and display in real time, allowing you a large working distance from the object while being steady enough to watch the screen while focusing. There are lots of them like this for sale, some with higher magnification, but I think anything like along these lines would be a great toy microscope.

If you can acquire the disposable covers doctors use for otoscopes (that thing they look in your ears with) they make PERFECT funnels for filling caps and I use them to fill vials and bottles as well. This is the item, to clarify. I find them very handy.
Edit: Sorry, I didn't see /u/hypnagoggle 's reply that said basically the same thing.

No need to see a doc just yet if you're not in pain.

Here are two products that I highly recommend everyone own:

  1. Elephant Ear Washer Bottle System by Doctor Easy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005M2B5P0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_aljnDbJRK0X69

Best way to check is with one of these

Look inside the port and look at the pins. Do they have any white or green corrosion building on the pins? If the pins are clean, most likely you are fine. The damage tends to occur if the pins are in contact with liquid for a period of time.

the dr. mom ones seems to be the most common for home use:

http://www.amazon.com/Generation-Dr-Mom-Otoscope-Disposable/dp/B00AJDZJCW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449776822&sr=8-1&keywords=otoscope

if i decided to do this, i would take the time to study up on how to look and what to expect to see and do several checks when ears were in good shape. its just a matter of weighing whether the time + money is worth it to invest in order to have a better idea of what's going on without having to go to the doctor every time. And I also just wanted to see if any parents had done this and how it went.
