If you have one of these jugs, you're probably car camping. Just bring a lantern!
If you're backpacking, these are pretty silly to carry. Buy a luminaid or a luci. If you buy through their sites, you can even donate a lamp to folks in need.
I've got a luci light I like well enough. It's not super bright, but it does pretty good for pretty cheap and not super heavy.
The more you do it the easier it gets.
Personally I would steer clear of motion detectors and trip wires / cans and such. The thing is there is all sorts of stuff walking about out there and they are for sure going to set it off and freak you out. It will just be a raccoon, but it will sound like Sasquatch.
I have a couple of solar powered tiki torches (goofy, but I kinda like 'em. They don't blind you wrecking your night vision) that I set out so I don't stumble around too much when making the pee run.
They sell them on a stick as well, but be warned the sticks will break the first time you use them. Pretty convincing flame though, and we all knowl animals are deathly afraid of fire :). Actually had a ranger come into my campsite once to chew me out for hanging torches in a tree.
this rooftop bag from Amazon. I drove from Los Angeles, through banff, to anchorage (over 5k miles) with it on the roof. It rained everyday of our trip for a month straight and never leaked a drop of water. It's still on my roof and it's rained on us almost every day we've been in ak. Amazing deal.
Also, if you're over landing you need to get an air compressor so you can air down and up if you need. I would also recommend an inverter and an extension cord so you can plug stuff in.
Additionally, I'd invest in some anker cigarette lighter and iPhone charging cables, as well as one of those large extra charge battery packs.
Also this little light is awesome. I use it all the time.
Okay slow down there haha. I have this lantern but it's not magic as far I can tell, is there a spell I need for that? I want to make it look cinematic and "filmic" like it was shot on film. Is this a good camera to invest in to make professional videos and films?
Halloween
Thanks for the contest! :)
I like the little Luci lights... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074NMPPVK/
Cheap. Solar. The 4 LED is a great nightlight. The 10 LED works as a flashlight.
Under $20!
Update: mine are more than 2 years old and still going strong.

When I camp I love to use one of the UCO Candle lanterns ( https://www.amazon.com/UCO-Anodized-Original-Lantern-Black/dp/B006WG9YEE/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1486953734&sr=8-9&keywords=candle+lantern) usually i also have the optional lamp-shade like reflector with it to shine down on a table (https://www.amazon.com/UCO-Pac-Flat-Reflector-Original-Lantern/dp/B000GBLPDE/ref=pd_bxgy_468_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=9FVV91XZWN2EXYXGX00Z) - might be something that fits the mood you want to set.
So for reading and such, he wife and I picked up a solar charge LED inflatable lamp that supposedly lasts for up to 24 hours on a full charge. We just keep it on a windowsill during the day and used it at night without power with no problems. Has a high, low, and flashing setting.

If he enjoys camping, he might like a Luci Light
I'd rather pay a little more for one of these. Lighter. Smaller. No batteries. Probably as bright, if not brighter.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NGD61GU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for cell charging.
Couple of these for light: https://www.amazon.com/MPOWERD-Luci-Original-Inflatable-Solar/dp/B00DQ1RDWS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484676064&sr=8-1&keywords=solar+blow+up+light
Also, "practise" being in the dark when it's safe. Don't need a kid freaking out in the middle of a real situation. Give him/her their own light source and show them how to use it.
For car camping I don't need anything blindingly bright that's going to annoy other campers. Just a little glow that will keep everyone from tripping over things. These lanterns burn for freaking ever on one filling. The wide base makes it very stable, but I don't know if I'd use it in a tent. This fuel is odorless.
They're bigger and heavier than led camping lanterns and they also use D cells, but I picked up a few of these this summer for around the house, or at night by the pool, etc. They're pretty handy and I'm happy with them so far. Gentos
Well, I'm 33 and I am still afraid of the dark.
A nightlight can be helpful, or leaving a light on outside your bedroom like a hallway light (that's what I've always done).
When I stay at my Uncle's cabin, I use a night light, and we have these speakers that light up that we got from The Source, I don't even play music on them, just use them for the light, and also a solar camping light thing...it's pretty dark in there but those make it pretty good.
These are pretty similar to the speakers I use: https://www.amazon.com/Dancing-Water-Speakers-Colors-Vary/dp/B00KOSU4UO/ref=pd_sbs_23_22?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00KOSU4UO&pd_rd_r=3fa3f279-61bc-4ed3-a99d-0365a7690bea&pd_rd_w=gQaoQ&pd_rd_wg=LvEcU&pf_rd_p=52b7592c-2dc9-4ac6-84d4-4bda6360045e&pf_rd_r=ZN5JVZH543MN39KHNE76&psc=1&refRID=ZN5JVZH543MN39KHNE76

The UCO lantern is an awesome gift..
No, actual candles... It isn't going to keep your car at room temp, but it is suprisingly warm...
I have:
UCO Anodized Original Candle Lantern Kit (Anodized Green) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B006WG9W6E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Mr4SAb3BQ0VGA
Or a bigger one:
UCO Candlelier Deluxe Candle Lantern (Yellow) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B000F7DIHK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_yo4SAbH7R0T37
I bought a few cheep oil lanterns and we played Touch of Evil by lantern light with the included sound track cd playing.. Frankly anything played at night by lantern light is going to be spooky.
Awesome costume, but he needs to switch to an oil lantern. How else is he going to blow it out all creepy-like?
This one looks pretty damn similar to the one Wyatt uses:
