Because buying bulk peppercorn is less exepnsive than buying those cheap grinders.

2.5oz for 4.20
($1.68 / Ounce)

17.5oz for 14 dollars($0.80 / Ounce)

If you cook a lot and are going through it at a decent rate, its worth it to have a refillable one.

Mapo Tofu - an authentic Szechuan Chinese dish. Hot and delicious AF! Recipe can be made without the minced beef/pork. Only issue some may have is to order Doubanjiang, Douchi, and Szechuan peppercorn. They are really must-haves for this.

next time- also add these

It's a slightly numbing peppercorn- not spicy per se, but a cooling almost numbing sensation. Common in Sichuan cuisine

You should be able to find them at any local Chinese supermarket; if you can't find them locally, there are several options available at Amazon (albeit marked up much more than if you bought it at a store)

I bought these on Amazon awhile back. Few seeds and VERY intense flavor. I had only ever used red peppercorns and when I first received these I ruined my mapo tofu because the flavor was so intense.

No problem and good luck! You could also pair a dish with some more ethnic pepper options, like dried red chilis found in Kung Pao usually, or get some Sichuan peppercorns and grind them in a grinder. Those wouldn't be sauce, but would give you some spice to a Chinese dish.

I bought a brand called IndoChine Kampot Pepper from Amazon.

Their prices have gone up since my last order. Have you ordered from the Spice House? Their prices for Kampot peppercorns are good.

They're on Amazon, so I might order them! They look tasty. $7.95 + $5.20 shipping is a little steep though so I'll have to see if I can find them locally or something.

There can be cross-contamination with anything. I think it's a serious concern and if you want something that's actually been tested, so you're not just taking some unknown company's vague assertion, order it from someplace like

Which is certified GF.

I would suggest the oxo pepper grinder. Fresh ground pepper for fuckin life.

If you want suggestions on pepper to grind, try Tellicherry peppercorns.

u/simplanswer · 2 pointsr/asianeats

Try this one. The key ingredients are the dried chilies and the "Sichuan Peppercorn," which has a numbing flavor to it.

I bought them off of Amazon from this seller. There was detris (twigs and seeds) mixed in with the peppercorns, but the flavor was fine. I would probably refrain buying again and just get them at an Asian supermarket, where I can see the product before I purchase.

These don't give you the tingly/numbing that the szechuans do. It's a nice other option. I recommend breaking them before trying to use a grinder, but it will depend on your particular grinder. These are what I got.

Absolutely.

Smash a ton of those peppercorns with a crap load of peppers like this and toss in some oil and you got yourself the start of a great dish.

Here on Amazon, they're a type of black peppercorn.

>Can you show me where on the packaging it’s labeled as disposable?

The fuck it isn't. It right on the damn label.

>It isn’t there. Pick up any other spice bottle on the shelf and the top will screw off so it’s reusable. It’s entirely reasonable for someone to have assumed this would be the same. I made the exact same mistake years ago.

Here's a clue, this costs virtually the same as the ones with the screw off lids you'd use to refill it.

Grains of Paradise on Amazon and the eponymous website.

u/mdezzi · 1 pointr/EatCheapAndHealthy

i bought this in Feb 2013, and it is still about half full. I think i use a lot of pepper too. Great purchase.

Finding 花椒 in non chinese grocery stores is going to be pretty close to impossible. You could possibly try online as well!
