You can get almost everything on Amazon. Browse through the "related products" on these pages, and you'll have all the bento supplies you need.

  • Soy sauce bottles
  • Panda bento box

You prevent everything from smashing together by packing the box tightly and putting lids on everything (see the six photos here). It's not foolproof, but it usually works well. You might want to use some baran to separate moist foods from dry foods.

B's mom insists that we all provide lists for her and her mother so there's no question of what to get - it's kind of nice, because you actually get what you ask for! I never got any gifts that I asked for when I was a kid, so this is cool to me. :)

  • AncestryDNA test - I've wanted to do one of these kind of tests for SO LONG, so I am finally hoping to do it this year!
  • SUSHEZI! I'm hoping this thing is cool and works well; if so, I foresee quite a bit of sushi in our future.
  • This lap desk so I can shitpost from bed more comfortably. :)

So, the trick to getting the garlic smell out of your hands is to 'wash' your hands with a stainless steel bar of 'soap' - totally kills any smell and cheap, too!

one of these?

u/Guygan · 5 pointsr/Cooking

God no.

DO NOT USE THAT KNIFE TO OPEN OYSTERS.

You don't need a sharp knife to open them. You need a stiff blade that's not brittle. The Opinel blade is very brittle. The tip will break off immediately.

Use what the "pros" use: Dexter Russell Oyster Knife

Storytime! I was so afraid of rolling sushi I actually bought a Sushezi. It is a terrible invention (it does actually work though), and I've long since realized that rolling my own is far easier than wrangling that contraption. Give rolling a try, and if you mess up, just eat it as a sushi bowl and it'll still be delicious! I believe in your sushi skills, internet stranger!

u/taburl · 5 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

I purchased a random device, the Sushezi, on Amazon that allows you to cheat on actually constructing/rolling typical sushi rolls.

I figured I'd give it a shot and see if I liked it... and now I've used it about once a week for several months. Once you have the staples mentioned by /u/unthused, you can even get imitation crab meat, some avocados, etc., at Aldi for next to nothing.

u/moisttrickery · 5 pointsr/sushi

I got a Sushezi last year for a secret santa gift. They work pretty good.

u/writergeek · 5 pointsr/AskCulinary

Get a rice press. Make rice (calrose) and fry spam slices. Cut a sheet of nori to the size you want. Fill press loosely with rice, to the top. Smash down, remove from press, top with fried spam slice. Wrap nori around, wetting the edge so it sticks to the other end.

Between rice and spam, you can also put a dab of teriyaki sauce, furikake, or even kimchi. No fucking pineapple though.

u/bran_buckler · 5 pointsr/whatisthisthing

If you get noxious smells on your hands (say from garlic or tuna, etc), you can rub your hands on stainless steel. You can check with kitchen supplies on Amazon or in a store and they will have what looks like a stainless steel bar of soap, otherwise using a spoon or faucet will work. There's some sort of chemical reaction that happens and your hands will lose the noxious smell and pick up a metallic one. The metallic one will then wash away with soap and water.

Here's one example and here's another

Edit - I’m not even logged into Amazon, these are non affiliate links.

I used to go through as shitton of oysters at work, and I really like this one. It also makes Philly Flips easier. I put just a bit of an edge on the curve part, just a very dull micro bevel, you don’t want to thin it.

If you prefer straight, these are good, too. The curve lets you get the upper adductor easier though.

yeah, it works well for cuts after you clean em up. There is waterproof medical tape that people use too.

You're guaranteed to cut yourself, try all the methods see what works best for you.

I prefer simpler pliers for pin bones, like this https://www.amazon.com/Kwizing-MADE-JAPAN-Tweezers-GLOBAL/dp/B01M8FHKOS

easier to clean, more sanitary. If you're using the pliers for other stuff tho, might not be as useful.

Ahh nice! Exciting! You have lots of hours, potatoes, onions, celery, garlic, and carrots ahead of you!

u/caradee · 3 pointsr/ketorecipes

Check out a sushi bazooka. It looks like some cheesy "As Seen On TV" BS product, but I have one and I can verify it actually works... though I haven't done keto sushi with it.

u/Qingy · 3 pointsr/Cooking

I have one of these and they're a huge help! It does take a few tries to get your sushi looking perfect, but you get the hang of it pretty quickly.

u/jayjaym · 2 pointsr/Bento

For the casual sushi maker, try this. Then you can focus more on getting the flavors your want and don't really have to worry about the technique for rolling it.

u/LiliedHart · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

LMAO sorry, oops. Here you go.

Basically rice labeled 'sushi rice' will do, I used to get Kokuho Rose or something like that. He's also going to want seaweed sheets. Any Asian grocery store will have these, but the rice might come in really, really massive bags. I found some on Amazon that were more expensive per oz but more manageable in size.

u/EFCFrost · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I learned off a website. Remind me in a few hours if I don't get back to you with the url. I'm at work right now.

Edit: Here you go! http://www.makesushi.com/

Also I highly recommend you put this on your wishlist

Hint hint

u/McGraver · 2 pointsr/GifRecipes

It’s so easy thought.

I’m kinda lazy so I got a spam musubi maker like this one to smash the rice. Then all you have to do is fry the spam with teriyaki or oyster/soy sauce and wrap it all up with seaweed.

Amazon link But note that "Usually ships within 1 to 2 months."

u/snipatomic · 2 pointsr/OddlyArousing

All the rice. Apparently it is indeed for "sushi"... Amazon link (also posted below):

https://www.amazon.com/Camp-Chef-Sushezi-Roller-Kit/dp/B001P8J1GU/ref=lp_2600075011_1_1?srs=2600075011&ie=UTF8&qid=1479139834&sr=8-1

Even in the images on Amazon, they use about 20x as much rice as filling... and the rolls appear to be ~ 4-5 cm in diameter.

u/LadyLucifer · 2 pointsr/Bento

Nice, I didn't catch that edit of yours, sorry.

Actually, the link that is still in your comment is the knock-off version, it doesn't look to me that Amazon sells the real Sushezi or you aren't guaranteed to get one depending on the reseller. Here are the reviews for that one stating the obvious knock-off/quality control issues, 8% 1/5 star reviews. I was about to order it too, but I won't take the chance.

Edit: Where'd you snag yours? :D

u/playhertwo · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Let's do it in the kitchen.

This contest was MADE FOR ME. My wish list is 90% stuff I want for the kitchen. Edit: I am only linking things that I have tried for myself so I can recommend them.

Have you seen these gloves? Never cut your finger off again! Need to steam stuff but you're tired of burning your fingers removing your veggies? I got you, girl! Love cooking with garlic but you're tired of your hands always smelling like it? No sweat! Tired of always fishing your spoons out of your spaghetti sauce? No worries!

For me, I just need my cast iron pans and I'm a happy girl. My dutch oven is probably my favorite one, I can make ANYTHING in it.

Various types of musubi.

I'm from Hawaii, and the traditional musubi is a layered thing with first a layer of rice, then a layer with fried spam, then another layer of rice, and you wrap that in seaweed.

It's very portable and a good lunch. If I'm lazy I'll just cook up some eggs with a bit of mirin in them and use that in place of the spam, or if I'm not lazy, I'll marinate some tofu in something overnight, cook that up and use that. You could also use quinoa or something, but I tried that once and wasn't able to get it to be sticky enough so the whole thing kind of collapsed.

Here is a cheap musubi press, and to make one you just make your rice and your protein center (in the shape/size of the press so it'll fit), lay down the seaweed with the press in the center of it, add a layer of rice, add a bit of soy sauce, press down, add your protein layer, with more rice on top, a bit more soy sauce, and press down again, then just push down on the press while lifting up the mold, and you have your brick, then you just wrap the seaweed around it (you can use a few grains of rice or whatever as a mild adhesive to keep it from coming apart).

u/stubbytuna · 2 pointsr/90daysgoal

So, here's a story about Stubby (me), I bought this ridiculous contraption on amazon that like, "makes sushi" for you because I wanted to make healthy vegetarian sushi at home instead of spending all my coin on fried sushi rolls (because let's be real, if I am going out for sushi, I am going ALL OUT, you know what I mean?)

Anyway, it's hilarious but got the job done. I did make a sacrilegious "BLAT" sushi roll. And it was pretty tasty.

u/pro_ajumma · 2 pointsr/Cooking

I just made this for the kid last night! Other people have given you the recipe. A press makes shaping the musubi super easy. This is the style I use. https://www.amazon.com/Happy-Sales-HSK5SPSM-Musubi-Sushi/dp/B000FWOB5S/ref=pd_sim_79_9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=VZSBWTZCQPTE9CMT2M5P

If you do not squish the rice down with a press, the whole thing will crumble apart. Be sure to use the short grain Japanese style rice, not the long grain American style.

I'll provide this as an alternative to the teriyaki sauce recipe already posted. I'm afraid that I always just kind of ad things "to taste" without using a recipe, though.

For the marinade:

Start with soy sauce and sugar in a small pot set to low to dissolve the sugar. Start adding oyster sauce in small quantities to taste. Adding too much will overpower the mixture pretty easily, so taste after each bit added. Think of the oyster sauce as augmenting the mixture's flavor rather than taking it over as the main attraction. Add water to dilute if necessary to your tastes (I think I always end up adding a bit).

You'll probably need more sugar in the mixture than you think since the spam is already very salty. Let the sauce heat up a bit and then marinade the spam in it for about 20-30 minutes.

Fry in a nonstick pan. Even with non stick, the sugar tends to caramelize, so don't try to get it too crispy or you'll have a burnt mess on your hands. There are those who fall in the crispy camp for spam (I'm more in the soft-cooked spam camp), but soft is best for musubis. You're looking for just a light crisp on the outside.

As for the rice, just use any sushi rice recipe you like.

You can make the musubi without a press, but it's kind of a pain in the ass. If you don't want to wait for shipping, you can make a ghetto press by cutting a spam can in half. Don't ask me how though. Maybe a hack saw? I dont know.

Anyway, it's kind of nice to toast your seaweed in the oven a little before wrapping, even if it says the nori is already toasted. I prefer the nori to cover the whole musubi like in my ghetto press picture (as opposed to OP's partial nori covering).

Good luck. I like to make a lot at once. Refridgerating them can be a little problematic because the nori will become soggy but imo they are still good :P

u/cchings · 1 pointr/shittyfoodporn

You're not supposed to roll spam musubi either. You get one of these things and press the rice into a spam-slice-shaped block. Unlike sushi rolling, it's pretty foolproof.

https://www.amazon.com/HIC-Lobster-Japanese-Stainless-8-Inches/dp/B0041HRJVQ

It just didn't sound cool to say "Lobster Crab Seafood Pick Fork and Scoop."

Also, you do and can if you have someone crack it open and get all the meat out.

I think to do the original poster justice however we need to resolve this issue of exactly how we are going to eat all the lobster. I am open to change. At the current coin price I am not buying a lot of lobster.

I'm using R. Murphy Duxbury Oyster Knife - As Seen in Bon Appetit Magazine - Shellfish Seafood Clam Shucker Tool - Made in USA - $22

and I've been extremely happy. All the other oyster knives I've used have been flimsy and I've bent the blade. This one is very sturdy and the handle is substantial and non-slip.

The following I recommend:

http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Champ-Pocket-Knife/dp/B0001GS19U/ref=sr_1_6?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1377493877&sr=1-6&keywords=swiss+army+knife

I think she would love this. She can use this to help her in the outdoors and it will make her feel like she will have more utility. I have had success with the swiss army knife from cutting ropes to helping my dad repair the bathroom.

http://www.amazon.com/Sante-Cookware-SUZ-Sushezi-Sushi/dp/B001P8J1GU/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1377494165&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=sushi+roller

For tasty food why not surprise her by making sushi with these products. Not only will you show your skill to her but also she will love you even more:

All you need to do is find the sushi recipes online not to mention you can youtube it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Mm_5Z__TjQ

For cleaning why not surprise her and make your own safe cleaning products. Hell do some research on how to make cleaning products. Nothing says I love you like making her gifts especially ones that can help her clean and be safe.

That is all I got.

The rice soaking is generally called for in a lot of sushi rice recipes, they claim it kind of jump starts the water absorption, but i don't really have any science to back that up.

Sushi rice is really sticky, a few grains of rice helps the seaweed edges stick to each other.

Musubi press!

Shucking them can be kind of a bitch but as long as you have a good knife and a towel to hold them still with, you should get the hang of it pretty quickly.

I say we go full on sushi outfit with this outfit/costume disguise topped off with this hat and obvi some knee socks to keep our bare leggies warm and bottomed with these to keep our toes warm .

We can stash the stolen 🍣 in this backpack and if anyone tries to stop us we will hit em with this sushi bazooka baby!

I couldn't help myself lol. Any additional game plans will be much appreciated.

(I hope that link works) hear me out. The sushezi roller looks rediculous. I mean. You load the rice in, make a trough, add the fillings, close it. And boom. Sushi roll. I make homemade "sushi" with it at least once a week. No, it's not authentic, but it makes life so easy.

Botan Calrose Rice Extra Fancy, 5lbs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002HQIN68/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vY71BbF9HECS3

This is also the rice I use. I can usually find it in a Walmart though. I don't have a rice cooker persay, but I do have one of those instapots that has a rice setting on it. It shouldn't be difficult to cook in a pot though.

I'm no expert by any means, but let me know if you have questions!
