I've grown to have such an appreciation of film because of this series. Currently I'm at 580 films in the list out of 1007. it includes multiple parters, which explains why there are 6 extra on this list. I've also kept up with the updates to this book since the 2015 one was released, so that's an extra 15 or so a year.
I bought that same book around 10 years ago as well. My intention was to watch as many as I could, no matter how long it took, and to write a short note in the book on what I thought of the film and date the entry. Seemed like it would be a cool project to work on.
Unfortunately I got lazy and never got around to it. It is still sitting untouched on my bookshelf.

I've been traveling from movie forum to movie forum looking for a great place to discuss both new film and old for a few years now. I lurked 4chan's /tv/ for about 6 months before giving up on it and landing on reddit's r/movies. Regardless to say, I started posting on r/moviescirclejerk quite frequently.
I'm trying to expand my taste as far as I can. Good, bad, doesn't matter. A helpful guide I've been using is the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list. I've completed about 270 of the films in about 3 years time (they change yearly though, here's a full list of every entry). My progress has been hampered a bit by college and my roommates sharing our netflix account, but I hope that it will change as soon as we split up next semester.
I occasionally post movie reviews on letterboxd, although I think the only ones with actual effort put into them are my most recent ones.

I'm currently working my through the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die in sequential order (up to about 1952 now) and it's been a magnificent education I have thoroughly enjoyed.
Bit hard work at the very very early stages, but I found so many amazing films that are straight into my all-time favourites. And a love of silent film I never knew I had.
Unlike other posts here, I think it's good to do sequentially, because you see the advancement of the medium and techniques, how influences spread, etc etc.
I've also been trying to see as many as possible actually in cinemas (re-releases, repertory stuff, festivals etc) and would recommend that.

A good documentary series and book is Mark Cousins' The Story of Film, though he is very much 'foreign = good, Hollywood = bad' so be aware of that

But there's a book on the subject and a ton of lists on the internet. All you're getting here is some recent popular American films.
