If it’s got the wires providing power, perhaps it’s too weak? Had to get this for a new ecobee, because I didn’t have a C wire available. If you have a plug nearby it may work?

This is what I’m using and haven’t had an issue what so ever.
I assume at the thermostat, you have one wire going into R and another going to W? In that case, I would get a plugin external transformer to plug in near your thermostat. That will power the ecobee (using Rc and C) and the wires from the furnace will go into Rh and W.

I did this just last month with good results for my 3-zone baseboard/hot water heating system controlled by 2 wires (R+W ).
I bought three ecobee smart thermostats w/voice control and three transformers for power (24 Volt Transformer, C Wire... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DJ7RHS5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share). I was lucky to be able to run the transformer wire through the wall.
You don’t need to buy ecobee per say as the transformer I linked would work with other thermostats, but since ecobee works with HomeKit right out of the box I went with it.
Probably a doorbell transformer, like this or this.

I bought a PDRYCB300 and an ecobee4. Unfortunately I have not been able to get the thermostat to talk to my slim duct system. (LMDN186HV) I bought a separate transformer which was able to power the ecobee4 but despite what I believe are the right wire mappings it does not send any commands to the unit. Note I attached this transformer directly to the ecobee4 on the RC and C terminals. I may try routing this through the dry contact next, but the exact configuration is not clear to me.

I already have a Nest E unit. So ordering another from UK wouldn’t work. But if the above transformer wouldn’t work then I would get the 3rd gen and sell the E
I had issues with my gen2 not having a common wire.
My dad has two Gen 3 in his house and my mom has one Gen 3 in her house. Neither of them have had any issues and they have had them over a year.
That being said you can buy something like this if you have an outlet within 26ft of your thermostat.

If it’s not your house, I wouldn’t be messing with the thermostat.
