It won't be a great screen but it will be better than a projector. Its thin enough as to not take up much room either.

  Nice setup. I have 2 of those AOC monitors and they are awesome. Here is a higher resolution one which I have on my wish list. I assume it would use more power. The AOCs I have came with the double USB cable, and some ports supply enough power with just 1, other times I need to plug into a second port. I have a couple ancient external USB CD drives that are the same way.
  
  

So the PG279Q has a screen that's roughly 13.2" tall. You'd want 16:9 monitor that has a screen width of around that number. That'll be kind of difficult, but you might be able to get close. A 15" or 16" 16:9 monitor would be about as close to a perfect fit as you can get.

My thoughts:

1. I'm not sure there are many laptop cases out there capable of accommodating a 22-inch monitor.
   
2. A stand for that size monitor would likely be not only heavy, but wide and difficult to tote around.

That's a good observation. Although there are USB powered monitors around 15", they don't seem to be as ultra thin as some laptop monitors but still fairly thin and lightweight (not less than a pound though). There's probably not much incentive for it and not all panels manufactured are good enough to be used (similar to CPU yields/binning), so there's risk as well (for less margins). The profit margin is probably too low for ultra thin, lightweight, no bezel 15"-ish monitors. The margin is there when paired with the rest of the body of a laptop, probably.

I can't speak for him but I tried one out for a project at work once and did notice a slight increase in latency compared to my "traditional" monitor. It was set up as a third monitor in this case from a company called AOC.

This USB (3.0 btw) monitor would be great as a second monitor for a laptop if you travel.

From my knowledge, there is no hardware solution to make a secondary laptop to act as a secondary monitor. There are software programs, like the one you mentioned, but that is all I know about. Laptops simply don't have video inputs on them to send to the display, this is all done within the computer.

If you want a secondary monitor though for your laptop, you can buy something like this portable monitor so you can take it where ever you want. These are also pretty cheap so it won't set you back much.

This has been something that I've been looking into the past several months. So far the best option I've found for portability isn't that cheap, but it is a very niche market.
Gaem's is the market for making consoles portable, however it can be used for PC's.

I've found that latency can be subpar on them, a bit worse than a low end TV. If you can stomach that and a potentially low resolution, they're pretty great.

If you're going to spend almost $100 on one though, a USB powered portable monitor is way better.

Probably overkill most of the time. But during an exam when I wanted an outline, reference materials, and my exam software open at the same time. This shit was clutch.

I use my laptop for my notes, monster cards, and any other info. I also use ambient noise, background music, and soundboards when appropriate.

To Live DJ, I used to use a 2003 Dell core 2 duo. It really depends what programs and how far you want to go.

These days, USB3 is one of the biggest things. You'll spend $50-100 on a great powered usb 3 dock guaranteed for high bandwidth.

So, any laptop that does usb3 really well, with 4+ cores will do good by you. Aim at 4 cores (either an i5 or i7). I7, you get additional threads, which means faster/more tracks.

If you are planning on having it plugged in 100% of the time, consider the build I listed above, and add $100 for a portable monitor The above build is a Mini ITX case. Surprisingly small.

I actually looked into this a bit when I wanted to create a raspberry pi console emulator when I travel. The affordable portable monitor choices are few and far inbetween.

TBH 27" is just not that portable of a size, so the market for that just isn't there for the most part.

You'll be looking into something smaller if you want it to actually be portable. They are all usb powered, so a usb bank would be a good investment as well. Or use you can use a tablet, some support HDMI in.

It was really slow for me as well. Maybe if both computers had ethernet connections it would have a more stable connection, but I'd rather just get an actual monitor at that point, maybe one of those portable USB monitors because I'd probably just connect it to my Surface 3.

OP, don't get a dumb tablet when you already have a full computer, get a portable external monitor instead. It will be cheaper and you won't miss any functionality for your use case. Take a look at these:

Honestly, I hardly ever use it. The pic quality is a little lacking. Its ok, but its 1366 x 768, which next to the SP2 is a little... odd looking.

Yes, it can run with only one USB cable, but as you might suspect, everything has a cost. This is no exception. It runs the battery down pretty quick. I haven't run any tests or anything, so I can't give you figures on how much juice it pulls.

I also purchased a cheap 24" monitor. I walked around a store and physically picked up each monitor and found the lightest and cheapest one. I figured I could ditch the bulky stand, McGyver a lightweight stand, and take it with me if I needed it. The only limitation would be the need for a power source.

My concern was that the SP2 screen would be too small for the kind of dev work I do. Honestly, this hasn't turned out to be the case. Sure, its a small screen, but I seem to have adapted just fine.

I do use the 24" LCD from time to time at home.

I'm actually more interested in using Surface RT/ Surface 2 as extra monitors for my SP2. I know its possible, I've actually done it, I just need to refine the process when I get some time.

It's a USB-powered monitor. It uses a Y-shaped cable. All three ends are male USB. There are no HDMI ports on the monitor. The computer you plug it into via USB powers the monitor, hence why I'm hoping a powered USB hub would work for the Pi, that way it's not drawing off the Pi's own power. This Acer would be the newest version of what I have (supplied by work). It's a cheap plasticky thing but I've had it for years and it's never failed me. I wish the stand had more settings, the angle is a little high for me, but that's a small complaint. It's not exactly slim, thicker than most slim laptops these days, in fact the reason I bought the Filson is because it's a big bag that can fit my laptop and the monitor with ease.

If you have a triangular kickstand pop out from one of the tablets, then you can basically turn the two screens into one giant portable monitor or kinda like a surface pro.

Then use that same keyboard via Bluetooth sitting in front of that large screen.

personally, i took a 5 inch screen attached to the pi, and with some glue and cardboard, made my own 'mini pc' that uses a small bluetooth keyboard. Cost of LCD was $30, but its just barely usable as a work station, but its very portable.

They specifically said "the only input is USB". Maybe they're just confused, but there are definitely monitors which only receive input via USB, like this or these. I'm fairly sure none of those would work with the Switch.

I'm a programmer as well, and everyone at my company works remote, and I was using an iPad mini as a second screen when we'd all get together and one of my co-workers showed me his portable monitor, I was an instant convert!

I don't think having to have wifi is that big of an issue. I'm always looking up SDK's and stuff online while coding anyhow.

However, having a large screen is a requirement for me. I couldn't really see myself doing much coding when I am away from a larger monitor or at least multiple screens.

If you want a 16" screen and are on a <$100 budget, it works pretty well. If you can spend some more cheese, I'd probably go with one of the nicer options though.

It is possible to replace the screen yourself. Google "replace screen" along with the model number. Look for a youtube video. If you don't have repair experience it may be difficult to repair yourself (depends on the model). This is no harm in watching a video before deciding if you want to try it yourself. It may be best a lot easier and safer just to buy a USB laptop monitor.

In order to be more helpful, these are the two closest options I've found so far...

1920x1080p AOC Portable. This guy is what I ended up ordering as a single side monitor for my X34. In vertical position it is 14.6" tall, which is exactly the height of my X34. The only thing I'm afraid of is it's USB powered. There may be some insane lag on the mouse pointer. It's going to be a web browsing side monitor, so if it's not terrible, it'll still be great, but I may have to send it back.

The also have the 1600x900 version, which is a bit bigger as well. It won't line up exactly with your monitor, but the PPI is almost identical. You could run the screen at 1440x900 instead, and the displayed image would line up with the image on your 34UM95C almost perfectly, pixel to pixel.

This would make P-L-P possible and run at a 5240x1440 resolution across all three screens. I'm just not sure it'll be any good though with the USB latency I spoke of above. I suspect it'll be fine, but I don't actually have mine yet, so I cannot say for sure.

Also, the screens on the side will stick out above and below your LG to pull this off, they are a little bit bigger overall in length and your LG's height.

For some easy portability

I've been looking for something like this myself to go with my PG348Q. Ideally I'd also want the same pixel height on the side screens, but 1440x900 monitors are really hard to find and usually don't come in 15.6".

I decided to order a couple of AOC e1659Fwu screens today, the same ones as shown in /u/vergil31's thread from a few months ago.

They're 16" screens, bezel included (15.6" display) with a resolution of 1366x768. It seems that 1366 is the closest I can come to 1440 in this monitor size unless I pay twice as much for the 17" 1080P version from AOC (which is sold out in Canada) or the 17" 1080P equivalent from ASUS which lacks VESA mount holes. It should be close enough.

I will let you know how they perform when they arrive. They're supposed to get here tomorrow thanks to Prime's free 1-day shipping.

My only concern is that they're USB monitors, so I can't connect them to my GPU. They use their own built-in display chip/driver, so I can't use them for NVidia Surround :(.

I mainly want them for auxilary windows (browser, Skype/Discord, CPU/GPU stats, etc) so the whole USB thing should be fine as long as they don't screw up the game/GSync rendering on my primary GPU/PG348Q.

The computer you use doesn't matter all that much but I would recommend getting at least 1 extra monitor. If you do a lot of traveling you can get cheap portable monitors on amazon.

I've been looking into more pc stuff for vanlife, I'm considering getting this pc stick and this usb monitor. Total price about $260. From what I can gather, they both run off 5 volts, with the pc stick using 3-5 watts and the monitor using 8 watts. With my power supply outputting 5v/3a it should have no problem.. but I'm a little wary of it not working. I haven't been able to find anyone online using those 2 in combo, so I might have to be the first to test it.

If it does work though, it'll be great! Then I can have an energy efficient Windows 10 station, which will let me do Unity Game dev on it (can't do this on Android)!

The image is... less than stellar. The colors are a little off, there is a graininess to it.
