I'm pretty sure the whole point of Freesync is that it's free in terms of the monitor (and open source, but why not use VESA's name of adaptive sync then?).

Take this AOC 24" 144Hz monitor, for example.

Now look at this one. Same exact monitor but with Freesync. Now, it is on sale, but the regular price is the same as the above monitor.

And here's the same monitor with Gsync.

Nvidia really needs to either make Gsync more competitive or hop on the freesync bandwagon because there is absolutely no reason that the same panel should cost 75% more just because it's got green on it instead of red.

u/Charizard9000 · 5 pointsr/buildapc

if your fine with a Korean monitor, 1440p ips Korean monitors go on sale on ebay for about 300 all the time, but 1440p would require you to have the graphic power to drive it in games.

other than that you could probably find a good high refresh-rate 1080p monitor for about the same

u/melancholyway · 5 pointsr/Amd

Did you buy him the card already? The RX 470 and RX480 are coming at the end of the month and will both feature better performance in battlefield and GTA and both are cheaper than that $250 380 you have in the cart.

But to answer your questions. No the 860k won't be much of a bottleneck in those games. Especially if you overclock it a bit with a good cooler. That cooler in your list only does a light overclock.

Can I also make a few suggestions?
You're building budget but went with a $200 monitor? Might as well spring for freesync and 1ms response time while you're at it.

Heres the one I use. Not super cheap but it looks pretty great. Only complaint is that it doesn't go that dark.

Hey everyone. I'm heavily torn between two very similar monitor models, the ASUS VG248QE and the AOC G2460PQU. Spec-wise they seem identical, but the AOC seems to be a year newer and perhaps better.

Any experiences out there to recommend for or against either?

Here is my recommendation! Pick up the processor and motherboard at Microcenter and they will be bundled and save you $30 (I accounted for this in the price listing). The EVGA 980Ti Classified is also on sale on amazon right now for about the price of a 1070! The 980Ti outperforms the 1070 in 90% of gaming scenarios, and the Classified edition should be an absolute beast. It's one of the top of the line cards from EVGA.

As far as the keyboard, I can vouch for it that it's a solid keyboard. I may recommend taking a look on massdrop, because they typically have really good deals on mechanical keyboards. I got a keyboard for $80 with Kailh switches and I can barely notice the difference from cherry MX. But they have cherrys too. The mouse, I picked one that seemed not too pricey and had good reviews. I haven't used it and I can't say there is a mouse I'd recommend as everyond has a different preference. I also threw in the speakers just so you'd have some. They're not bad, but I'd recommend getting a headset. Once again, something that is open to a lot of preference.

Anyways, I hope you like the build! Let me know if you have any questions and what you end up doing!

Edit 2: Windows installation: For installing windows, you're going to be receiving a physical disk with a product key inside the package. Unfortunately, I do not know of any confirmed legitimate retailers of windows selling on USB. You can go to this website on another computer which will provide you with instructions to downloading and installing a Win10 ISO onto a USB for installation onto your computer. Best of luck!

Don't get a cheap one. I got one of these and didn't notice the difference between 60fps and 144fps. Then I got one of these and I noticed the difference like night and day, even just at the Desktop.

u/RYRK_ · 1 pointr/Monitors

I think max 400 CDN, sorry for not listing budget.

I was looking at this monitor, also.

u/Caffeinated_DaVinic · 1 pointr/controlgame

I have this issue too. I'm playing it on my AOC G2770PQU and I never have issues with games being too dark because of the amount of colors this monitor can display. However Control is the singular exception to that rule.

I've tried changing the monitor brightness, contrast and gamma and the in-game brightness but all it does is wash the color out and not actually increase my visibility. There are spots in the game where you can climb through holes to flank enemies, but they're completely pitch black by design. Nothing I've changed settings wise on my monitor, GPU or in-game settings even slightly increases visibility in these spots.

I tried hooking the PC up to my TV which has a much lower color range, and it's even worse on there. Spots I can actually see on my monitor are completely black on my TV. It doesn't seem like an issue with either of our monitors/tvs, I think this game just has really dark spots that you aren't supposed to see in. Though I can't see any reason why the devs would do this.

Here's what I'm talking about. This is in a combat area and the path in front of me is a flanking route to get the drop on the enemies. You can successfully move through this area to get a better angle so it's not like an area the player isn't intended to go through.

u/Kavari · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I just checked over Amazon reviews (good place to troubleshoot some issues) and it seems that some of these monitors are faulty.

Link

u/LDG92 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Not that important but it's nice. It's more important for if you play AAA games in the future where your fps starts hovering around 40-90, it'll make it look smoother. I got an AMD GPU since gysnc is a ripoff and you can get a nice monitor something like https://www.amazon.com/AOC-G2460PQU-Ultimate-Performance-Professional/dp/B00HY7PAUC with freesync for cheap. Maybe have a look at the RX580(8GB) or one of the RX vegas.

u/SaftigMo · 1 pointr/Monitors

People seem to like this one more than the Asus. If only the 2 from your post are actually in your budget you should get the Asus since you can adjust tilt swivel and height.

What people hate about the Asus is the color reproduction, but if one of your main uses is gaming that will be less of a problem, since games are not realistic anyways.

Many people may also use f.lux outside of games, where this would be even less of a problem.

u/Cokadoge · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm buying this for Black Friday, and according to the reviews it seems good. It's 1080p, 144 Hz, 1 MS Response time, and is pretty cheap. You may need to mess around with the color settings though. I saw this thread on the CSGO Sub which talks about color calibration on that monitor.

u/Z_enon · 1 pointr/bapcsalescanada

Give this a look for a good place to start. As for price I think that website does not do the best job possible, specific models I'd keep an eye out for are this AOC which features an adjustable stand and high build quality, and this Acer which has no adjustable stand and no display port.

u/MeRollsta · 1 pointr/Monitors

Sorry for the late reply. Was working on my project report which was due this evening.

Yes, that's a great monitor. 144 Hz will make a huge difference if you can hit it. But at 1080p, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Christmas will probably bring in better deals, but highly doubt Staples will have sales on Monitors. So if you have absolutely no other choice apart from Staples, go for it.

Also, if you are going for this. Try to get Staples to price match Amazon. Talk to customer care. They're selling it for $250. http://www.amazon.com/AOC-G2460PQU-Ultimate-Performance-Professional/dp/B00HY7PAUC

With https://www.amazon.com/AOC-G2460PQU-Ultimate-Performance-Professional/dp/B00HY7PAUC as display.

Ryzen 5 1600 for a solid processor, GTX 1070 to have a powetful gpu that can go over 60 FPS. SSD + HDD, 16 GB of fast ram.

How big would be your intel discount? The same build with an i5 costs a bit more, https://www.pc-kombo.com/share/Dg2DJJYz, with an i7-770K again $100 more, https://www.pc-kombo.com/share/mEwjrjn2. But for high FPS gaming both would be better than the Ryzen.

I think the monitor upgrade is the perfect idea. Upgrading to a 24 inch 1080p monitor will make him sooooo happy if he spends even a little bit of time in front of the computer. If you are looking for the best bang for your buck in your price range of $200-300 I can give you some suggestions.

If your boyfriend is using his computer for mostly FPS gaming, I would check this one or this one out or this one out. These monitors are great for FPS gaming because it has a refresh rate of 144hz and a great response time which helps in fast pace games like FPS games.

If you want to go above $300 but stay below $400 for the sake of getting a 27 inch gaming monitor as opposed to a 24 inch (which the three above are), check this one

If you boyfriend only games some of the time, mostly plays non-FPS games or uses the computer for any kind of photo editing or video editing I would check this one out. Dell Ultrasharps are top of the line monitors. I personally have owned 3 of for 2 years and have loved them to death. This monitor is an IPS monitor, while the above is a TN monitor. IPS monitors have better color accuracy and viewing angels and are better overall except for refresh rate. Unless you need a 27 inch monitor, this is far and away the best all around monitor in your price range.

There are also some good gaming monitors monitors in the 150-200 range as well if you don't want to blow your entire budget on a monitor. For hardcore gaming check out this [one] (http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-Gaming-Monitor-RL2455HM-24-Inch/dp/B007HSKSMI/ref=zg_bs_1292115011_4). It doesn't have has high of a refresh rate as the other gaming monitors but is sub $200.

Let me know if you have any more questions

u/DDDavinnn · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm going through the same predicament... leaning towards the BenQ myself. I think for a good IPS 27" 1440, you'll pay a lot more, and they all seem to hover at 60Hz. For that reason, I'm thinking about a 24" 1080 144Hz like this:

http://www.amazon.com/AOC-G2460PQU-Ultimate-Performance-Professional/dp/B00HY7PAUC

u/ShadowPhynix · 1 pointr/buildapc

could try something like this, or this

u/azmodunk4lyfe · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

So I bought a 144hz monitor, what cable (or cables) should I buy to enable the 144hz refresh rate, as I am only using the standard cables that allow for 60hz refresh rate?

EDIT: Oops probably should tell you guys what hard ware I use: I am currently using an HDMI cable that connects to a GTX 970 and is displaying on This monitor.

u/ElectronicJump · 1 pointr/Overwatch_Memes

Definitely look into getting a 120/144Hz monitor, fam. I can recommend this baby right here. I got it for around $200. This is another fine budget option at around $189.

u/Abnormal_Anomaly · 1 pointr/buildapc

Unfortunately, I've been unable to find decent "budget" 144hz monitors here, such as AOC G2460PQU and Asus VG248QE. The ones available are way too pricey.

u/singu_fnstr8 · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm trying to choose a new monitor for my setup. I wanna upgrade to an entry 144hz (I play at 1080p).

Narrowed down my list to these 3:

AOC G2460PF

AOC G2460PQU

Acer XFA240

Which one should I choose? I run on gtx 970(freesync wont matter here), mostly play dota and maybe some AAA games on high. I'll spend up to $250 if you guys have other ideas (US based)

u/MrCrybaby86 · 1 pointr/buildapc

The prices are inflated right now for a couple reasons..

  1. The i5-8400 is on intels newest chipset, so not that many motherboards in the market.
  2. DRAM prices have doubled because of smartphone demand for DRAM as well.
  3. GPU supplies went down because of mining, especially in the mid range, so cost increased from lack of supply.

Seasonal prices are typically cheaper because of super sales like black friday or cyber monday.

PC gaming on your TV is not ideal because of the input lag. Monitor brands don't matter THAT much, but picking a one with solid reviews and a good warranty is always something to look for (Asus or Dell). These websites are a good place to reference:

As for a monitor, might I recommend the AOC G2460PQU? It is a 1080p/144mhz/1ms response monitor. It is a ~$249 monitor, but not IPS. However, the viewing angle not being extreme, the experience is negligible between LCD active matrix and the newer IPS version.

I'm half way in the same boat. Recently got a Dell S2417DG cheap and wanted two flanking 24"s. I managed to pick up a Benq XL2411z for $120 just scouring LetGo and Craigslist locally... working a guy down from $150 on a AOC G2460PQU right now. If you're in no rush I'd suggest going that route. Also, better if you have some way to test them when you pick them up. I hooked the first one up to a laptop and plugged it into an inverter in my car.

u/person1234man · 0 pointsr/buildapc

here is a monitor i got for $250 a few months ago and it works great. its 24 in and 144hz

u/TimeTravellerSmith · 0 pointsr/buildapc

> cheap...with 200fps constantly

Well two problems. One, it's not exactly cheap to run a game at 200fps. Second, there is no monitor in existence that you'll be able to see it running at that rate.

The closest you can get is a 144Hz monitor, and that by itself is going to run you $200 to $250. That caps you at 144fps that you can see.

To run those frames you'll need something like a 280x (280x=7970 at the bottom). Which runs about $300.

TL;DR, it's not cheap.
