Tested this camera today out on the snowmobile trails - worked great and doesn't make you look like Snoo (as does the GoPro).

P.S. Get a 32gb card though too - the 4gb it comes with is only good for about 45 minutes at 720p 60fps.

Contour ROAM2. I'm pretty happy with it.

I've got the contour roam2. Under a hundred bucks and comes with a few mounts. Nice and slim, good quality video, decent battery life, cheap, not everyone notices it.

Both the ContourROAM and the ContourROAM2 would work for what you want. The ROAM is about $100 (Amazon), the ROAM2 is $200. I really like the form factor for most things of the Contour line (although the Go Pro is nicer for running).

I have a couple GoPros for shooting fun stuff but my every day commuter camera is the Contour. The form factor is a lot more helmet friendly, the giant on off switch lets you operate it with your gloves on, the rotating lens lets you level the shot easily, and the Contour Roam 2 is on sale for under $120 on Amazon right now. Actually I might buy a 2nd one since I have the original and mine isn't fully waterproof like the Roam 2.

I think you'd have to look for an older model such as the roam2. It'll more than suit the purpose "functional." http://www.amazon.com/Contour-ROAM2-Waterproof-Video-Camera/dp/B009CN8VRK

I've had a camera in the car for a couple of years now and one for the helmet was pretty high up on the list after I started riding. I was holding out until I had a bit of spare cash but a white van cut a corner on my way home from work last week (if I'd been in the car it would have been a head-on collision) and I was still fuming when I got home so got straight on Amazon and ordered it. The van incident was the deciding factor because he could have put me down without touching me and driven off without a care and I'd have been massively out of pocket by not being able to prove it wasn't my fault.

I don't know if driving standards are getting worse, or if I notice it more since learning to ride, but during my brief journey to work I can pick out incident after incident across the whole spectrum from sheer inattentiveness to outright lunacy. Running lights, cutting corners, driving with no lights in shit visibility, zero lane discipline, on the phone, texting, I think I have at least one example of all of these (of them, not me) downloaded from the cameras.

I'm sure it's a case of 'when' not 'if' I will need to use video as evidence following an incident so I'd advise everyone to drive or ride with one.

Here's the camera I have in the car

And here is the one I use on the bike

I personally have a Hero3 I won five years ago in a video contest, Crosstour Action Camera I use for my rear on my commuter (when I remember to charge it). And for my race bike I have my Fly6(ce), but I will use it on my commuter if I forget to charge my other rear camera.

Here is a list of common ones:

Inexpensive (< $100)

  1. AKASO Action Camera 1080P HD EK5000 amazon link

  • Handlebar and Helmet Mount included, very low quality video

  1. Drift Stealth 2 amazon link

  • Low light is not great, otherwise fine camera

  1. Crosstour Action Camera amazon link

  2. Yi Lite amazon link

    Mid Range ($100-250)

  3. Contour ROAM2 Waterproof Video Camera amazon link

  4. Yi 4K Action Camera amazon link

  5. Garmin Virb Elite amazon link

  6. Sony HDRAS100V/W amazon link

  7. GoPro Session amazon link

    High End ($250+)

  8. GoPro HERO5 Black amazon link

  • Really, any of the GoPros will probably do very well. They aren't know to have the best battery life, though

  1. Fly12(ce) camera and front light amazon link

  2. Xiaomi Yi 4K Action Camera 2 NIS Store link

  3. Fly6(ce) Amazon link

I've got a gopro knockoff called a Yi Action Camera that works reasonably well. I've got it enclosed in a waterproof case and use a standard gopro mount to stick it to my helmet. It looks ridiculous, but it works, though at 1080p there's sometimes not quite enough resolution to make out license plates further away, so I'm contemplating moving to Yi's 4k model sometime in the near future.

If I were going for a sidemount camera, I'd probably recommend a Contour Roam. It's one of the cameras I was debating when I picked one up. I went with the Yi because it was cheaper and would let me see how useful it would be and how it would work mounted to my helmet.

I would be careful of anything with no reviews

I have the ContourROAM which works great.
It doesn't record continuously but when I get to the office every day I just format the disk and recharge.
It has to be recharged anyway so remembering to format is not an issue.

Polaroid also have a new camera out.

>Having cameras on my bike may make people think twice before offering death threats on my morning commute.

Don't assume this. Assume everyone out there can see you clearly, and are trying to kill you.

Looks like there's firmware available, but no description on what it does. http://help.contour.com/customer/portal/articles/1416219-contour-firmware-updates

This is the camera I have: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009CN8VRK/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

About half the price I paid for it in 2013.

I don't have a cam for my bike yet. I don't commute, but still run into lots of situations during recreational riding that I wouldn't mind having video of either just for fun, to show friends some of the beautiful trails we have, or in case I ever need it as evidence. I do have a dashcam in my car and like it. For the bike I'm leaning more towards something like the Contour Roam 2 or even the Mobius because the GoPro seems like it'd be big and clunky (and probably expensive) for mounting to my bike or helmet.

u/ciabattabing16 · 1 pointr/dcrideit

I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Contour-ROAM2-Waterproof-Video-Camera/dp/B009CN8VRK

I find they have almost the same features and benefits of a GoPro, but without all the extra price because of the brand. It's stupid easy to mount and use, and the quality is fantastic. My only issue is that it doesn't over-write itself, but I suppose that's more of a custom usage problem on my part, most people wouldn't want that.

$305? I hope you mean $179.
