It's a lost art, sadly. Most people buy off-the-rack suits and don't even bother to get them tailored. They buy shirts at a neck size 1/2 to 1 size too small, then blame the tightness on their ties.

A tailored or bespoke suit, good shoes, and and a well fitting or custom shirt is one of the most comfortable things you can wear (outside of the dog days of summer)

If anyone needs a primer, check these books out (non-referral links)

Details Men's Style Manual – Full of great pictures, simple, to-the-point advice

Men's Style: The Thinking Man's Guide to Dress – Elaborates on the finer points of dress and provides a history of how it all came to be. The writer has a great voice and really helps you appreciate men's style.

Permanent Style – Blog on tried and true men's style. Written by a man from London; he takes you through his journey on getting bespoke suits and custom shoes made on the cheap (getting a "last" and having shoes made from that, going to HK for suits)

You don't have to be rich to look good, although it is somewhat of an investment. $200 for a good navy suit, tailored (Men's Wearhouse); $100-250 for a great pair of black shoes; $60 for a couple fitted white shirts; $50 for a few nice silk ties in conservative colors. And if it's not already habit, spend $20 for a haircut and start shaving every day...

Try this out and save the PS3 for next year. At least the suit can get you a job. And when you realize how damned good you look; you just might find yourself reconsidering your notions of traditional men's dress.

Hello 29 year old version of me, from the 36 year old version of me. Since you're a reader of actual books, this should be pretty easy.

  1. Women judge others (both genders) based on clothing. Doesn't matter if it's fair or not, they just do. If you roll into a bar rocking UFC branded clothing, it's not going to work. I used the Details Guide to Style to up my style game.

  2. Books? My man. First: No More Mr. Nice Guy. You will be blown away at how he says that everything you've done with women is wrong. I realize you've said that you handed it to your therapist, but by the questions you're asking, you haven't started to live it yet. Second: Models by Mark Manson. There are other resources, but read those two first. Come back to Rational Male afterwards.

  3. Here's what I gather about online dating:
Okcupid/Plentyoffish: free sites, lots of cheapos/weirdos. Probably decent for hookups.
Match: Pay site, has a moderate "meat market" feel to it.
Eharmony: the most expensive, best for meeting long term relationship material

  4. Hold off on having kids. Focus on you for a while.

  5. You were a lifelong feminist? How did that work out for you? TRP will help out a lot with this.

  6. Sorry, I have no idea what this question is asking.

  7. When you start feeling confident - believing in yourself, standing tall, not breaking eye contact - people will respect you.

  8. I banged a few substandard women to get it wet after my divorce. While it was great to spread the seed around (wear a condom), be forewarned - low quality, insecure women can be really hard to get rid of.

  9. Buying dinner is one thing - buying her jewelry and shit is another (don't do it.) PS - she should be offering to buy dinner/drinks every now and again. Take her up on it. If she never offers to pay for anything, she views you as a cash register, get rid of her.

  10. I'm not a fan of counseling myself, but live your life. I'm not sure how many hard-charging badass counselors there are out there but if you're not happy with his level of service, find another one.

    Overall Impressions/Recommendations:

  • You really seem intent on asking other dudes for permission/approval. I'm sorry that you didn't have a male role model, but you need to start doing things that YOU approve of, and make YOU happy. This is the essence of TRP.

  • Once your phase of crying/drinking/feeling sorry for yourself is over, take some time, and work on YOU. Improve yourself before you get out there.
  • Get your ass into a gym. Lifting weights will get your testosterone flowing, and get all of that shameful, feminist estrogen out of your system.
  • Get a hobby. I was feeling powerless after my divorce. In addition to weightlifting, I started martial arts lessons. All of the time I would spend by myself drinking beer and playing video games, I converted into weight training/martial arts time. It will turn you from a little whimpering beta into a bad motherfucker. Plus you'll have something to talk about on dates. No woman gives a fuck about how you beat level 35 of Knight's Quest 8.

It's a lot to deal with at once, and I wouldn't wish divorce on my worst enemy. But you know what? A year after I got divorced, I was banging women 8 years younger than my ex-wife. You can do this.

Sounds like you're doing it right. This is a shining example used in Details Men's Style Manual. Here's the page regarding colorful socks:

"Wearing brightly colored socks is a look championed by Italians and British men who like to indulge their peacock tendencies a little more than American men do. Don't let that put you off: Stripes, dots, argyles, and checks - or just plain color - can make a bold statement. Done badly, however it can make you look like a chump.

Bear the following in mind: Socks are a transition from the pants to the shoe. Try to keep one color constant or blend the two colors brought together. When in doubt, lean toward the color of the pants.

Think about the shirt and tie you are wearing. If you pick up colors from the shirt and tie, your cocks will blend seamlessly into the same outfit.

Beginner:
Transition from blue, gray, and black by wearing socks in subtle patterns or lighter blues and browns. They'll match the clothes you already have.

Intermediate:
While you might not want to go the whole hog, try red socks with jeans and brown shoes.

Advanced:
Stripes, patterned, and checked socks are for style connoisseurs only. Apply similar rules as the ones for shirts and ties - match colors and balance scale."

For anyone on MFA who doesn't have the Details Men's Style Manual, I highly, highly recommend it. It really helped me develop my basic fashion sense and is a fantastic reference for fit, style, and coordinating outfits. Get it.

I'm always up front and ask a fellow customer or salesperson what color an item is when I buy it if I don't know, or the color isn't listed on the tag.

Then, I did some basic research on what colors/patterns go well with each other. I ended up buying the following book but there are plenty of websites out there with good info.

I saw some episodes of that, and then decided I'd rather read a book than put up with all that gratuitous sass.

Dealing with conflict and having long relationships was something I had to build over time, and most of that will come with just working toward being the ultimate man woman desire. Having confidence, good direction in your life, lots of friends, good hobbies, good manners, being gentleman, having boundaries and standards. Don't be insecure or clingy. I didn't just read one or two books I read about 40 and at one point it became an obsession to be this ideal man woman desire.

no dress shirt will look good if it doesn't fit. r/MFA has guides on the toolbar for determining that and other topics. Usually, i get clothes as closely fit as possible and then let a tailor do the rest.

if you're into r/mfa's general style, i recommend details b/c it has many pictures to draw from. There are a few errors, like how they guy's suit sleeves are ~1/2 in too long in the cover pic (it shouldn't cover up the dress shirt's sleeve underneath)

u/Nibbly_Beaver · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I'm not really an old hand at this myself. Hardly even touched a pair of jeans until a couple years ago. Not a detriment in and of itself but when you replace them with zip off pants or the same ugly cords... I just laugh when I see pictures of myself. I believe I saw your post and you said it was your starting point? Not bad for a starting point. You're got a leg up on most people.

What really did it for me was things like this subreddit though I hadn't found this at the time. That spurred me to buy this book which then led to me buying my suit in China and some other clothes while I was there and I have been hooked ever since. It's a refreshing change to start dressing well!

As a lady who knows how she likes her man dressed, I have to recommend The Details Men's Style Manual. It breaks down all occasions and what pieces to spend money on and what to get for cheap.

Looking young runs in my family. My brother just turned 26, but still wasn't being taken seriously. He started just listening to the hairdresser on what cut she suggested and styling products. Now he looks more his age. He also stopped wearing as many shirts with stuff on the front.

I'm a female so I often get asked while working retail "So, what are you wearing to prom?" and I can't bear to tell the lady that I already have my BS. Thankfully, I can put on makeup and professional clothes and look older.

I bought the Details Guide to Style as an intro to nice clothes for a male friend. Also, guys, if you don't want to look like a teenager don't wear those chunky vans.
