I have a Harmony One Universal remote. It controls my TV, AV Receiver, Blu-Ray Player, X360, etc...

Unfortunately, PS3 uses Bluetooth instead of Infrared, so this remote doesn't work with PS3 without a $60 Bluetooth adapter.

I'm gonna be pissed if this doesn't work with PS4.

With those requirements, I would either build an HTPC or buy a Mac Mini. I don't think any of the box solutions would cut it. The Boxee Box would come closest since it can play content off networked drives, but for not that much more, you could have a fully customizable HTPC.

As far as size and looks go, it's hard to beat a Mac Mini. What I did was that I got the one with the smallest internal HD, then bought a couple of Iomega minimax 2TB drives and daisy-chained them together with FW800. When I need another 2TB, I'll buy another. Any drives would do, but those stack nicely. It would be more efficient to set up an unraid box for storage, but I think it's more reasonable economically to do storage gradually with external drives.

The Mini also has the advantage of running quietly and (unlike my PC) doesn't draw a lot of power. That allows me to keep it on all the time and let it search for shows, download, and organize them.

You could also put together a really nice-looking HTPC. You can get kits from Newegg, or look at the builds people have put together in the XBMC forums. You can get a lot for your money that way.

For remotes, I don't think you can do better than the Logitech Harmony One. It's not the absolute top of their line, but I think it's the best one. It's comfortable, durable, has a mix of real buttons and on-screen buttons, and you can set it up to control any program you're running. On the Mac, it has built-in control for a bunch of programs, but if you also install Remote Buddy, that opens up a ton of options. I can quit, start, and change applications all with the remote.

As far as software goes, if you put together an HTPC I'd go with XBMC and if you go the Mac Mini route I'd go with Plex. XBMC has more skins, but Plex has a nice media server function that makes adding shows/movies really easy. And the skins are nice, too, Retroplex and Aeon in particular.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with Hulu, but on an HTPC/mac I'd install Hulu Desktop. You can set up the remote to quit the other programs and start Hulu. I just browse with Chrome, but there's also Kylo, which is a 10-foot interface designed for using on the TV. You can use the Harmony remote for input/browsing, but personally, I like having an Apple wireless keyboard and trackpad on the coffee table. They look nice, so I don't mind having them there, and it's a lot less frustrating than surfing with a remote.

Another thing to look into: if you're setting up an HTPC, why not try getting your free OTA signal onto your PC? I use the EyeTV One, but you can also use HD Homerun with either the EyeTV software, MythTV, or Windows Media Center. As far as downloads go, instead of torrents I'd consider something like Sickbeard. But if you really want to torrent, you can set up RSS feeds to get your shows and do some kind of auto renaming/moving files so you don't have to manage it manually.

I paid $95 for it, via a pricematch and coupon. This was a while ago.

If you've got more than one remote control in the house, I'd recommend the Harmony ONE by Logitech.

I know it sounds frivolous as hell, but damn if that hasn't made bein' a lazy fuck just that much easier. It replaced about 4-5 remotes for me.

Yup, my parents have the 880 and its buttons are wearing out. I have had the One for a few years and haven't had an issue with it. I think they did a great job at fixing all the issues when they released the One and I definitely recommend it.

No it is a standalone remote according to the Harmony rep on the Q and A portion of Amazon.
