Those specs are sub-par at best, and an absolute scam at worst. 8GB of RAM and 1TB of HDD for a $1700 machine?! There should be at least 16GB and an SSD for the OS at that price point.
In just 5 minutes I threw together an equivalent PC on Amazon for about half the price ($890: mobo, ram, gpu, cpu, hdd, display, mouse + keyboard, case.

The experience is awesome, like others have said. Keyboard is a must, mouse optional with the pad on the controller. If you're curious, here's the keyboard and mouse I use; they work like a charm and are super cheap.

Both include all peripherals. The slightly overbudget one, is a better card, but not significantly, though you will probaby see a bit of a fps boost.

People never seem to like Logitech even though they make super quality peripherals for the price. Go for the Logitech MK270 Wireless Keyboard/Mouse Combo
The reach will allow couch gaming and battery life is super long. I've had it for almost a year and still haven't needed to change the batteries. I use my computer every day.

This Lenovo Multimedia Remote is my favorite for a nondescript keyboard/mouse combo that's perfectly at home on a coffee table. It's extremely comfortable in your hand and is a nice, compact all-in-one controller for an HTPC. If you keep your eye out you occasionally see it go on sale for around $30. It's back-lit and works quite well, though the range leaves some to be desired. Get a USB extension and locate the receiver somewhere in the open for best results.
Also, the Logitech Dinovo Mini is quite popular but I don't have personal experience with it. I'd like to pick one up if it ever drops below $40 or so but I've been content enough with my Lenovo remote to not have a need to pay more to replace it.
With any HTPC, however, I strongly recommend having a cheap wireless KB+M combo hidden behind your couch or in a drawer for times when you need to spend time on the PC side. Doing extensive install/configuration or troubleshooting with just a basic HTPC remote will drive you nuts otherwise.

That's fair. Except if your already gaming on a console you can just use your TV as a monitor. Plus M&k combos are pretty cheap. Sure it's not the best M&K but you can use those while you save up.

Edit: Okay so pretty much every nvidia card has cuda. The 270x is a lot better than the 750ti for gaming. But the 750ti can still play older games on ultra at 1080p. But for future games don't expect much.

I changed up some stuff, I highly recommend Windows 8.1. I hate the layout but there are programs you can download to make it look like 7. It's $30 after rebates but I added a ssd, to speed up your OS, and some of your programs. If it's too expensive you can just take it out.

This is what I use to play FFXIV on my PS4. Like you, that's the only thing I use it for, and I didn't want to invest a ton of money. This rig works perfectly, and it sips battery power. I've had the batteries in mine for months. It was completely easy to set up an use.
I guess you could use a trackball for those games if you are okay with the keyboard on your lap and the mouse on the couch.
EDIT: I forgot that you said you were 5-6 feet away, here is a wireless one. If you are uncomfertable with having your mouse on the couch here is a handheld one. Also this is a pretty cheap wireless keyboard.

The processor would probably be the thing heating up excessively (which they almost never do, especially if you arent overclocking), and it would reduce it's voltage to get the temperatures back down, or force shutdown if it couldnt regulate it's temperature.

It's kind of hard to fry things. Ive seen people try to destroy their computers via overclocking and the PC will read out over 300 degrees before it shuts down, and it will still boot up about 5mins later. It would not fail because there are lots of failsafes on much more expensive processors. What really kills the Xbox is that it uses an APU, where the GPU and CPU are on the same chip. This concentrates all of the heat into one very small spot and if there's ever an issue it becomes a huge issue.
