Are people really acting like OP is a terrible owner for not wanting to feed the dog on the carpet? There are so many things that make someone a bad pet owner but this just isn't one of them. It's completely understandable to avoid making a mess where it's hard to clean. I don't let my dog eat on the carpet, but that doesn't mean I lose my mind if he tracks mud in or has an accident. Can we try to be a little more understanding, please?

The only thing I know of that could help if the dogs have access to food all the time is a bowl like this that only opens when a pet wearing the tag goes to it. I think someone mentioned it before, but I thought a link might help. I hope you're able to find a good solution!

I just heard about this, which is really a shame because my cat became fat after I moved in with a girl who had two cats, who would steal her food all the time. So I started free-feeding her and boom, fat cat. I would have loved to have gotten this while I was in that situation, before I started free-feeding her (she's on a diet now).

Essentially it's a collar that unlocks their sealed food container. So your cats could have different ones (or just the slow eater), that way her food stays hers and the other cat can't get at it!

You can get pet bowls that will only open for one pet (they are activated by a chip in a tag on a collar or by the pets' own microchip.) They range in price from $40 up to around $150.

Dammit I thought this would actually be a useful and simple to make idea, I could do that! So naturally it's already done:

Bowl wil only open if the right dog with the right collar is near it.

Not a vet, but have you looked into something like this?

Sorry if this doesn't help you. I think it is a good idea though

Like a lot of people are saying, timed meals worked wonders. However I had the same problem because my partner and I work odd hours (so we couldn't regularly put down the meals ourselves).

There are some really cool automatic feeders that use chips to keep the cats out of the food. The one I chose wireless whiskers. It's pricey but I liked some of the features that this one had (one bowl for multiple cats, auto-diet, and a large gravity feeder). I've had mine for over a year and it's been working great to keep my chubster from gaining weight.

There was another one that was pretty decent looking as well called the wonderfeeder. If you got two you could be sure to monitor each kitty's diet.

Hope that those help you!
