If I'm kind of in the same spot for a while and not crawling all over a building site all day, I like to put it head down in a big side pouch.
I don't really like it hanging down from my ass cheek, because then it hits in the back of my knee. That sometimes ends up like the opposite of a doctor checking your reflexes, where you're walking around and your hammer hits you just right and your knee bends and you almost fall down.
If you hang it from a spot that's as far out to the side as possible, then it only hits the side of your knee and probably not as often as the behind way. That's probably as good as you're going to get in most circumstances. You can get pouches with a hammer loop on them, and it spaces it away from you by at least the width of the pouch. I've also seen guys who sort of hang the loop over top of a pouch and it angles the hammer handle away from you, but makes it harder to access whatever you keep in that pouch.
One thing I will never, ever do is hang a hammer or a speedsquare right in the middle of my ass, because then you have a hard metal object right at the base of your spine. It just seems like that's a good way to turn a minor fall into paraplegia.
The shorter your hammer handle, the less likely it is to hit you. That's unfortunate, because I like long handles.
You might also consider carpenter's pants. They have a hammer loop kind of around mid thigh, and your hammer is constantly hitting you, but not very hard because half of it is actually below your knee.
