Dashcams record constantly and write a lot of data. SD cards have a finite life where eventually they fail and stop writing data. Some (most) dashcams don't make it obvious that the SD card has failed, so you may think it's recording, but its not.

At one point, I had a month of missing footage due to a failed SD card because I didn't check it. Buy an endurance card for longer life.

Erm... no, they're not?

Standard

High Endurance

Formatting will help identify and block bad cells from being used, but the fact is that high endurance cards are made to endure more write cycles than a standard card, which a dashcam does constantly.

Dashcam is a cheap way to have an extra peace of mind. Definitely recommend it. Also they are low maintenance. I don’t ever notice mine because it sits in front in rear view mirror.

Regarding the price, I say go for a mid range. The cheapo ones can be unreliable and low build quality. The expensive ones tend to be too much and more than what most people need. A good mid range dual cam is the A129. Make sure to get a good SD card too, one that is optimized for video. Fortunately they are pretty cheap.

Installation is easy if you just plug it to your cigarette lighter. Then you just run the cable in your trim, which is super easy to tuck into at the edge.

The next level is hardwiring it to your fuse box. That takes about an hour and can be done with a YouTube video instructional. Or take it into a car audio shop and they can probably do it for $150 or so.

Hope this helps!

Check this one out. It's the one I have. It has both a front and rear camera. Apparently it takes a specific kind of SD card like this one. Definitely glad I got mine as I do a ton of driving for work.

u/TheEnigmaBlade · 3 pointsr/gifs

It never gets full because it loops over the oldest recordings. I have a 64 GB card (and the exact same dash cam) and it stores a little over 4 days of 4K 30 FPS video at a little less than 2 hours per day. I only remove the card if I want to pull a recording off, otherwise I leave it in.

It's also important that get a high endurance SD card because the camera is constantly writing to the card for extended periods of time. Normal SD cards will fail after a couple months.

It's powered through USB (if your car has USB ports like mine), but also comes with an adapter for the cigarette lighter DC power outlet.

> I like the low visual profile from inside the car, and the adhesive instead of suction mount. Also, with built in screen, I can show others halfway decent video without having to mess with other hardware.

Not really, the screen is too small, and most users don't understand how to play video from it anyways.

Most would have a Micro SD card reader to Micro USB (for cell phones) and copy the video files, then play on their cellphone, as it is a larger screen and easier to use.

> Another is if I have to give up a card as evidence for some reason (Lawyer, Police, Insurance, etc).

You never give a Micro SD card to the police, they likely wouldn't know what to do with it. Same for insurance, or lawyer. They could lose it, break it, damage it, make it unreadable, "accidentally" format it. It is always in your best interest to keep the original and send them a copy via youtube, or dropbox, or some other email service or video linking site.

Also send the part of the evidence you want to send to those people. You can remove audio, or show only the clip in your best interest, sometimes remove GPS/Speed indicator. It is your evidence, you shouldn't even mention that you have a dash cam until you are ready to show evidence in your favor.

Many shy away from Sandisk products because Sandisk Ultra is a common fault with most dash cams. Not made for dash cam use, controller can no handle constant write cycles of a dash cam. Also Sandisk Ultra seems very heavily recommended on Amazon for some reason, not really sure the reason.

Transcend High Endurance is highly recommended, however 32 GB will have less storage than one would suppose. The A119 v2 video quality and resolution comes at a cost of space.

> Circular Polarizing Lens for VIOFO A118C2 / A119 /A119S Dash Camera ~$13.00

So this is a nice addition, but I would really hold off on purchasing it until you actually want to see a difference. A119 v2 is fine w/o it.

Minor and very livable annoyances of this hardwire kit: 1) Vulnerable to cold, in cold weather it will struggle to supply the dash cam with enough energy. - Once car warms up it is fine. 2) Short cable lengths - that little box (the low voltage cut off) will most likely end up on your dash board. - Does not bother most people. 3) 2nd 5amp fuse for Tap a fuse not included. Purchase seperately from any auto store, $1-5 USD.

> Total: $187.16

> A little more than I thought I would be spending at the beginning of this venture, but still an acceptable amount for what quite possibly (but hopefully not) could easily pay for itself in the future.

I would consider purchasing the Thinkware F50 ($90-110 USD) or BlackVue DR450-1CH ($119.99 USD).

Cost = Dash cam + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit

The Thinkware F50 from Blackboxmycar has a lot of options and comes with everything included to set it up. - If you can live with the video quality of the Thinkware F50 of course. - Excellent Park mode, Excellent build quality, fair video quality 1080p.

The BlackVue DR450-1CH is a little more pricey but still has good options. - Excellent Park mode, Excellent build quality, good video quality 1080P.

The A119 v2 - Lackluster parking mode, good/fair/poor build quality, Excellent video quality 1440p. - This is the standard 1st time dash cam purchasers dash cam. Built for Video quality, and price, there is a reason why it is A119 v2, v1 had failure to record events - caused by GPS mount/Dashcam connection pins, either bending, or sheering, or failing to supply the dash cam with enough power. Common work around was to plug the power into the dash cam it self (less desirable side plug - more visible - vs GPS mount top plug). This worked for some, others found Quality Assurance/Build quality problems in the A119 v1 side power plug. This caused many RMAs, and annoyance. The A119 v2 gets marked down for the faults of the v1 sadly. Lackluster parking mode: not buffered, not automatic, no low voltage cut off feature built in. Buffered recording - a few seconds before the motion sensor is activated Excellent parking mode dash cams are able to record. Automatic - Some dash cams are able to detect when you are parked, A119 v2 is not. Low voltage cut off feature - Built in ones can generally change voltage/timer of cut off. Cheap hardwire kits like you chose are preset, and unchangable. (Works for most not all.)

  • Thinkware F50 1-CH ($69.99 USD) - Fair video quality, Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode. - Lacks a Wifi/cell phone app, but format free technology helps and reliability is top notch. ($69.99 USD) - 2nd vendor. ($90-110 USD) - 3rd vendor. - There is a coupon code for this one in the video description.

  • BlackVue DR450-1CH ($119.99 USD) Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, lacks wifi, optional gps, lack of reviews.

    ---

For the money you are spending, I would pick the BlackVue DR450-1CH with - $10 USD discount code: Receive $10 off with "top5blackboxmycar" when shopping for a dash cam over $99.99 at BlackboxMyCar.com - From Top 5 Dash Cams of 2016 - video description. I would like to see more reviews, but BlackVue is an excellent name, and has put out quality products in the past.

word of advice. If the built in dashcam is cyclic recording to that usb, you should probably opt for a high endurance SD card and an adapter.

If it only dumps a file to it when you hit save, USB stick would be fine.

Look on the stick and see if theres a folder with a bunch of video files that you didnt save, and/or if the stick is constantly full when you plug it into your computer. If its full, its cyclic recording, and will wear out quickly.

For consistency's sake, here's a link to the one I got

Built in screen lets you review video from the camera itself. Saves to micro SD card. I highly suggest getting one like this "SanDisk High Endurance Video Monitoring Card" made specifically sustained constant writes. (Since it is constantly saving video)

It plugs in via USB to the cigarette lighter thingy in your car. I got one like this so I would have extra USB ports for charging phones, while still having my two spots for the dash cams. It comes with its own which I think has two USB ports total. I just wanted more ports.

When the device receives power, it boots up on its own, and turns off on its own when you turn off the car.

The way it writes video, it saves it in increments that are a few minutes long (You can set the duration) and when the SD card runs out of space, it just over-writes the oldest movie it has saved.

If you get in an accident, or just see something neat you want to save, there's a button you can press to make sure it saves the specific movie.

Since you'd have the long cables routing all over your vehicle, it's wise to route it so it doesn't get in the way/is hidden. I actually did need longer cables, but fortunately this dashcam uses a mini USB to standard USB.

EDIT: If you do not have a computer (and only a phone or tablet) your options for transferring the files from the Micro SD card are either getting an adapter to read micro SD on your respective phone or tablet, or buying a dashcam specifically with bluetooth connectivity if you would rather go that route.

I bought the Sandisk High Endurance 64B microSD card back in the beginning of January and can confirm that it works solidly for dashcam applications.

(Having a card work well on a cam isn't just a matter of its memory cells being "high endurance", it's also a matter of having a write controller that won't freak out when presented with a nonstop stream of data such as surveillance cameras and dashcams provide.)

u/640212804843 · 2 pointsr/teslamotors

I have the same one. It started boot looping. Luckily it was only the memory card, but it was the blackvuew 128gb card that is supposed to be specially matched to work with the camera better.(really a rebranded korean barun card that is just a normal card and nothing special)

The blackvue is hot normally, so it definitely doesn't like summer heat.

I switch to one of those high endurance cards to see if it handles the summer heat any better. The bummer is they only go up to 64gb.

u/RandomAccount4Qs · 2 pointsr/Dashcam

This is the one I was planning on buying.

u/haelous · 2 pointsr/cars

Sandisk isn't bad, you just need to buy the right model. Sandisk makes high endurance cards for this purpose too.

u/BunchOCrunch · 2 pointsr/fargo

It would also prove whether lanes were jumped or not! This is the one I have. Took me about 20 minutes to install. Super easy! No, it doesn't upload automatically or use data. You put a micro sd in it. The card I have will hold 16hrs of video. Once the 16hrs is reached, it starts recording over the oldest footage. So you will always have the last 16hrs of footage available to you.

u/Armed_Accountant · 2 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

Is the ultra model not the high endurance one?

nvm, this is:

Just make sure to not cheap out on an SD card. Get one for dashcams. They are pretty cheap.

u/Sheilamainbattletank · 2 pointsr/dashcams

Having a CPL filter actually reduces glare on daytime videos but has a slight negative effect on nighttime recording generally. So not having one will actually improve it.

I'd go for a 64 gb card, and spefically a high endurance once like the Sandisk one. They are only a few bucks more than normal ones but apparently better for the cycles that video monitoring systems place on the cards.

As for buying on Amazon vs Viofo, i'd go with the one that's cheaper or has better shipping options. Also, Amazon has easy returns if something happens. Not sure about the Viofo store.

u/PiratesSayMoo · 2 pointsr/homeassistant

You can try using one of the "industrial" or other high endurance varieties of SD card to hopefully get a much longer life. Most of the big names have a line (or two) of cards that are good for this and they're not too much more than the regular cards. Sandisk has these:

I'd personally go 64gb since you can record continously for up to 30 hours before overwriting (depending on fps settings). See this link for breakdown on recording times:

https://www.blackvue.com/video-quality-settings-and-recording-time/

I have these two and they are great. I prefer the Samsung though since I believe they make better cards than Sandisk. Also, you will need to use the blackvue windows viewer app to format to FAT32 before using.

Do not hardwire to an "always on" supply as it will drain your battery and MURDER your SD cards. Dashcams are notoriously hard on SD cards anyway but recording 24/7 will cause them to fail very quickly.

AVOID Sandisk ultra cards as they die very quickly (I have killed one already). It is best to get a high endurance card. These (usually) use MLC chips which are higher quality than the cheap TLC chips.

  • Lexar high endurance
  • SanDisk High Endurance
  • Verbatim (MLC)

You can hardwire to an ignition only power source through the fuse box if you want to / trust your wiring skills but I find the 12v socket adapters more convenient (my car has two) and my car is a company car so i may need to return it at short notice.

The trim install is easy except for the top of the pillars and sometimes stiffer parts of the centre console. Trim removal tools are about £5 for a cheap set and they saved my fingertips getting mashed lol.

> 128 is just for those who probably should stop putting stuff on their phone

WTF? The cloud isn't an option at all for those who take the 128GB option.

> M.2 Storage is cheap, because it fits a form factor that can be used for tons of applications.

Bullshit. Your average smartphone has no room for an actual M.2 SATA/PCIe slot, much less M.2 2280, without taking space away from every other critical component.

If you're talking about micro SD storage, maybe, but it's at least an order of magnitude slower than the crappiest of eMMC NAND storage on a phone, and it's typically not reliable enough to be used as system storage. "High-endurance" micro SD cards are a thing.

u/RexingUSA · 1 pointr/Dashcam

Not a camera recommendation, but you could definitely get away with using just a 64GB card for 8 hours of 1080p footage. If you haven't already purchased a card to use, check out this one: SanDisk High Endurance
