If you like the movie - and it is a movie that all movie-lovers should own - then you should know that there are many versions for sale.

I highly recommend The Complete Metropolis. This version was not only restored but this includes 25 minutes of new content and the original score. I'm not one for documentaries but I love the movie and it has an awesome story of how they found the new footage. Some of the new content was not restored to showcase the original so, hopefully, Criterion will take a look at it one day to create a true masterpiece.

I do not recommend the version that has Giorgio Moroder's score which is the Giorgio Moroder Presents Metropolis: Special Edition. Since this is a silent movie, here is a sample of what music from this version is like (NSFW). It's pretty terrible and has no relation to the original - and beautiful - score.

Here's a trailer to the superior version. (NSFW)

My advice? Watch this. Osamu Tezuka got the idea for the original Metropolis manga from just looking at one original still for the original movie in a magazine (Though i have read before it was the poster for the film).

After watching that, you should read the manga of course.

Ideally we should view the 2010 "complete" version with a running time of 148 minutes. This is also the version that's available on netflix.

Unfortunately, I haven't had time to watch the new complete version, but hopefully I can watch it tomorrow night and the thread will still be going on Thursday.

I have not, but I recently obtained last year's two and a half hour version.

This version of Metropolis? I wasn't aware of a Pat Benatar/AC DC soundtrack, but this is the version I have. I know Nosferatu has a version on DVD only with a Type O Negative soundtrack that I picked up for like $4 on Amazon which wasn't bad for $4. I do have the Blu of Nosferatu and of course recommend it.

Monster Squad is not quite the same as Goonies, just kind of in the same vein. I do recommend you check it out some day for sure.

Also, have you heard of Trick R Treat? Great film. And Dead Snow which is subtitled but fun. Dead Alive is a classic Peter Jackson film which is just awesome but I think out of print. Another PJ film is The Frighteners which is still fun. Re-Animator is also very good. And Return of the Living Dead is a zombie film you'll definitely enjoy, it has a lot of dark comedy. Also, the Evil Dead trilogy is great. Many people swear by Evil Dead 2, but Army of Darkness is my personal favorite.

If you're into "so bad they're awesome" films, then Troll 2 is for you ;)

Per what everyone else is saying: watch the longest version you can. The movie uses the time wisely, and while it IS a bit silly in certain regards and themes, it's overall a wonderful sci-fi movie.

If I were going to recommend a purchase, this blu-ray from Kino is where I'd point you. =)

Oh my...so hard to choose one. But hands down, top five(ish) (more or less in order):

  • The Producers (1968) - Mel Brooks' first work is still his greatest.

  • Metropolis - the original sci-fi film. A beautiful and terrible Art Deco future. If you watch it, actively seek out the "Complete Edition" with re-recorded orchestral score. So many movies have drawn from this well--Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Matrix...and too many others to list.

  • Adam - A beautiful film. A love story. Not a Rom-Com. And Hugh Dancy stars, though that's just a bonus, and not what drew me.

  • Thank You For Smoking and In The Loop - two wonderful and dark political satires, though the latter is significantly darker.

  • Company (2006) - Not strictly a "movie", but a recording of a live Broadway performance of one of Stephen Sondheim's brilliant works. Some of my favorite music and lyrics from any show.

  • The Muppet Movie - No explanation needed, I assume?
