The Goals
My goals with this project were pretty simple. I wanted the Playstation to look as original as possible from the outside, and have as many original parts still functional as possible.

The Results
As of right now you can use the original controllers with the original controller ports, the power switch to turn the pi on and off, and the original power cord to actually power the pi. I had to take out the opening mechanism of the playstation to make space, and I couldn't find the time to get the reset switch and LED working, although I may come back to that later. On that back I took out the Serial I/O and AV Multi Out ports and replaced them with USB and HDMI passthroughs.

The Materials

  • Raspberry Pi 3 Model B
  • Playstation 1 (Preferably broken)
  • Mausberry Circuit (Use your own switch)
  • PSX to USB adapter
  • HDMI Passthrough
  • USB Passthrough
  • Phone Charger that can provide enough power to your Pi

    The Process

I'm not going to write a full guide here, but I'll just give a general explaination of the main things that are going on. Feel free to ask any questions about anything I leave out or don't explain well.

  • The Pi is powered with the original power cord and port. Basically power comes from the wall, through the cord, into the two wires I have soldered at the bottom of the board at the contact points, then to the other end of the wires which are soldered to both plugs of a phone charger, which goes into the Muasberry Circuit (more on that later), then into the Pi. I am well aware of how incredibly dangerous it is to be dealing with 120v wires so you don't need to remind me
  • The original controllers ports work similar to the adapter I bought. There are 9 holes that the controller's prongs plug into, so I just used 9 different wires to connect the original ports to their respective spots on the adapter, so the adapter still gets each signal from each prong. 2 controllers with 9 prongs makes 18 wires that I had to connect to the adapter. This was by far the longest part of the process and I would not recommend doing it unless you really like being bored and frustrated.
  • The Mausberry Circuit allows you to turn your pi on and off with a single button and safey shuts down the pi every time so you don't damage it. It also cuts all power from the Pi when off, which saves electricity. I got the create your own switch version so I could create a circuit with the Mausberry and the original power switch. As you can see in the pictures, the power sources plugs into the Mausberry, which then plugs into the Pi. The power only goes through the Mausberry if your switch is set to on.
  • You may be wondering why the original power supply is snapped in two pieces? I only needed the board for the power coming in from the wall, and the power switch, reset switch, and led. Since the power switch is part of it's own circuit with the Mausberry, I didn't want any electricity from the wall coming into it and mucking everything up, so the board was turned into two new boards.
  • The USB and HDMI passthroughs are pretty simple, there's not much to explain there.

Overall I would say this project was a success. It was a fun experience and I learned a lot in the process. There are many parts that could have been done better and safer, but it all works in the end. Feel free to leave any comments/questions/suggestions you may have!

Here's the Amazon page I got this from... Not sure what problem this is solving.

Could be the TV/Bracket causing the issue. I had a bracket that completely swallowed the WIFI signal and the router was one floor up less than 7 feet away. I got a HDMI extender, got it off the TV and it worked fine.

Save yourself a few bucks - any HDMI cable released in the last 2 years will work just fine they are all built to comply with industry standards - don't fall for the marketing for 'special' cables, it's all just 1s and zeros! https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Extension-Support-Resolution-Television-Xbox360/dp/B00QV3THB8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500028157&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=hdmi%2Bextension&th=1

Yes they are high speed so HDR works find. I found these which seem to be slightly better quality. Getting a short male to female HDMI for each input on the processing box helps. It prevents you from fumbling around and inevitably scratching up the finish on your box/console.

Have you tried a HDMI extension cable on the stick? Maybe its getting some interference from the TV. I use a 1.5' one like this https://www.amazon.com/Extension-Extender-adapter-Supports-Television/dp/B00QV3THB8/
