The other commenters saying to go to a music shop and play a few first are right, but a budget is a budget and I doubt you'll find one for less than $100.

This isn't black, but a friend bought this one and I was surprised at how well it was made for the price point. Definitely not a "prop" and it felt nice to play : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002F58TG/ref=sxr_sxwds-rbp_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=3346373142&pd_rd_wg=HQ7US&pf_rd_r=6VHAPSDACBHY3QYGSCPE&pf_rd_s=desktop-rhs-carousels&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B0002F58TG&pd_rd_w=mZxOL&pf_rd_i=acoustic+guitar+takamine&pd_rd_r=34760c56-8829-4c2f-ba3d-26c7fc3cf107&ie=UTF8&qid=1520256568&sr=1

Hi. Former Guitar Center manager here. We used to sell this model and I can weigh in.

In short: there are better guitars our there for 100 bucks. The Rogue isn't the worst guitar out there for the price, but they're sure as hell far from best. It looks like others in this thread have already mentioned Fenders and Jasmines, which are far superior.

This one is 14 bucks cheaper and will out perform and outlast the Rogue. I have one myself as a beater guitar and it's great. The satin finish lets it ring and the neck is really comfy.

Here's a Fender FA-100. It's a great starter guitar that sounds even better with a decent set of strings. IF you can spend a bit more, bet a Fender DG-8 instead. Otherwise, this will do fine.

https://www.amazon.com/Fender-FA-100-Beginner-Dreadnought-Fretboard/dp/B075P9367B/ref=sr_1_8?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1520260380&sr=1-8&keywords=fender+acoustic+guitar

Epiphone makes a few good ones too, but Fender and Jasmine tend to outperform them. Avoid Luna (crap guitars that only look pretty), Rogue (not terrible but you can get more for you money), Mitchell (QC is awful. Have unboxed many with cracked tops, seperated fret boards, and missing parts), First Act (toys), and Ibanez (but only at this price point for Ibanez. They get way better once you go up a bit).

Don't forget to look at used stuff, either! A Used Seagull or Fender T-Bucket would be awesome finds and not too expensive.

Eh, hopes for those fuckers who were born happy with a silver spoon in their mouth, never much cared for the hopeful.

When you look at things from a purely subjective point of view we are all stolen from a place of warm happiness, placed in a world that is cold and inhospitable where we struggle to eke out an existence worth having, spoiler we don't, and then we die. Real fun all that shit.

Hope isn't something that is going to fall in the laps of people like you and me. It just ain't gunna happen that way. There isn't any way to just spontaneously become hopeful because it's a crock of crap.

You gotta get by day by day. Find something simple that you can't go without. Maybe you like to cook

Maybe you like to play guitar

Maybe you like editing gay porn

Dunno, just try and find something you like cuzz every bright spot is a bit brighter when you hate everything.

And you know try to drink less, just makes it worse, I'm sure you know that, but boy is alcoholism not fun.

u/CactusSmackedus · 5 pointsr/OkCupid

One strategy is to order inexpensive hobby related stuff from amazon and pray that you'll actually get into it.

a simple-to-decent accoustic guitar

a cross stitch kit

art stuff

if you want to get into something really niche you could try to learn how to do linoleum printing

IDK this might not be so helpful but maybe it was a little helpful. Most of this was art related b/c that's what I think of when I think hobbies I guess, but you could also check out raspberry pi / arduino projects if that's more up your alley.

It's working now. I was going to surprise you, but Amazon won't let me, so if you add this guitar I'll get it too.

u/agent_of_entropy · 3 pointsr/Guitar

I'd start with something like the Fender Natural Acoustic Guitar Kit. My learner's guitar was a $99 Lyons by Washburn from Target. It's a good guitar and I still play it.

u/SpaceWhy · 3 pointsr/pics

Wood cost aside the specialized parts to make it even remotely playable would add up quick.

$5 for bridge pins

$15 for tuners

$5 for bridge/saddle

$5 strings

$5 for frets (optional I guess)

That's $30.

For $30 this would play way better than what your cobble together with scrap wood unless you put some SERIOUS effort into it

Every guitar I own.

I have a couple acoustics

  • A shitty Peavy acoustic electric (don't know much more about it than that since it was a gift and was used to begin with)

  • A Jasmine S35 that I bought online a while back because I wanted an acoustic and couldn't afford anything better)

    And a couple of electrics:

  • A Gibson Maestro in an SG style. Got it from a friend as a gift when I first showed interest in playing guitar. He payed around $70 for it at the time.

  • A First Act ME1959 Stratocaster that I got as a gift a couple of years after I started playing.

I really wish I had the money to afford a not-shit guitar. Not even something great, just...not awful.

That said, they get me buy and I've grown oddly attached to those hunks of junk. Especially my Maestro. I've had it since day 1, so it's like my baby. My shitty, shitty baby.
u/genome_rants · 2 pointsr/IndiaSpeaks

I have this guitar. Like many others here I went aggressive while tuning and ting... string snapped. Happened after 3 months of purchasing it. After that I realized it's hard to change strings with the guitar head it has. I should have bought something with head like this one.

I'm good with A, D, E, G chords and can change between them now.

Tutorials I use are:

  • justing This one is really good.

  • For chords and strumming I check out videos from this channel.

Took me ~5-6 months to get hold of aforementioned chords. Only weekends ~20-30 mins practise.

Long way to go and become good. :)

Looks like this guitar at Amazon which is sold with steel strings.

u/yocum137 · 2 pointsr/guitars

Really, you need to visit a couple local guitar shops and play a few guitars - even the ones outside your budget. The reason being is each guitar will fit you differently - the neck shape, width, thickness, the body depth and bout width, and of course, the sound you like to hear.

If you find a more expensive guitar that you like, then that company might have a similar, more economical brand and model that will fit your budget: Gibson owns Epiphone, Godin owns Seagull, Takamine owns Jasmine, etc.

Speaking personally, if I'm spending more than $100 I want to play it first. With that said, there is a Jasmine S35 on Amazon for $80 with an excellent review: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/review/B0002F58TG/R3A0XMRVPGCB95/ref=cm_cr_dp_mb_rvw_2?ie=UTF8&cursor=2

I was shopping for a travel guitar, something I could take on the plane w/o worrying too much if it got crushed. I didn't buy one, yet.

I did buy an excellent Parlor, 0-size guitar last year for $350 - The Loar LO-216-NA. It's a small body with full length neck that joins at the 12th fret. It sounds awesome and I like the smaller body - I don't feel like I have stretch to fit around it.

I recently played a 00 sized Washburn that had an awesome sound, a slim C-shaped neck that joined the body at the 14th fret for about $300. I wish I had written down the model. That'll probably be my next guitar purchase.

I've been wanting to develop my nonexistent musical skills for a while and am getting a guitar. I figured I should get the cheapest reliable one I could find til I've proved I'll actually stick with it.

Can someone who knows guitars can tell me what is "expensive enough"/ what makes a good acoustic guitar? There are a ton of options.

u/kill-69 · 2 pointsr/guitarlessons

I had a $99 Takamine from Guitar Center and it was great, till I dropped it and broke the headstock off. It was not this one it had a pickup in the bridge. That said people seem to like these.

http://www.amazon.com/Jasmine-S35-Acoustic-Guitar-Natural/dp/B0002F58TG

My main acoustic is this http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/acoustic_guitars/yamaha/fg700s/index.html

It rreally sounds good but the fret markings can be a pain. They are small and the 3rd fret is not marked. I played every thing guitar center had under ~$600 and this is the one I picked.

If you want a cut-away used might be better. When I buy a guitar I first make sure I like the tone and playability(action, neck thickness and width). Play Every string on every fret to make sure there is no buzz or dead spots. Good luck. You don't need to spend a lot to get a great guitar these days.

thanks so much man this has been really helpful. I wish they'd have a disclaimer in YT tutorials instead of just saying "yeah tune down all your strings am an octave for this song!"

Looked up a soundhole humidifier, is it worth getting one for a cheap guitar I got for free ([it costs about 40 on Amazon] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0049J4O0K/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1480955632&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=bag+nylon+string+guitar&dpPl=1&dpID=51X%2BKuY9AcL&ref=plSrch) , had steel strings and body damage on it when I got it, to give you an idea of its condition).

edit: shit I think it was meant to have steel strings just looked at its amazon page

Hopefully I get to replace it with a real guitar soon, I'm thinking of getting an electric, a [Yamaha Pacifica] (https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-Pacifica-PAC012-Electric-Metallic/dp/B0002GZWZ0) because it's entry level and versatile ($150, twin humbuckers plus single coil), and the two styles I'm interested in are blues and grunge. A lot of those songs take a ton of arranging to sound interesting and 'full' on acoustic without pedals etc [this guy is my favorite example] (https://youtu.be/rwpi6vkiAgA)

At the same time I want to replace the classical with a proper acoustic, so I'm fairly torn on what to do.

u/acruz80 · 1 pointr/Guitar

Is there an acoustic/electric combo that works with Rocksmith? I saw this on Amazon, but after reading reviews, it seems to not work with Rocksmith.

u/jack_spankin · 1 pointr/Guitar

Okay, at the risk of being laughed at, I'll throw my suggestion into the discussion. Jasmine by Takamine.

Here are the reviews:

http://www.amazon.com/Jasmine-Takamine-S35-Acoustic-Natural/dp/B0002F58TG

It really is a decent very cheap guitar that you can learn on without risking much money at all. For the price it cannot be beat. Don't let the cheap price fool you.

u/BionicSammich · 1 pointr/guitars

I'd probably advise against both of those guitars. Its best to go with a well known brand if you're going for something around that price. A lot of those really cheap guitars are garbage (trust me, I have one). Paying a little bit more for a well known brand can sometimes guarantee a little bit of better quality since they wont want to slap their name on something very bad as it would hurt their more expensive models. Fender is one of the most well known brands out there, next to Gibson. This guitar will probably be a lot better quality, although it is a little more expensive.

I've put 3 links to the same guitar. One is just the guitar and a gig bag. The second is a guitar, gig bag, lessons DVD, strap, picks, cleaning cloth, tuner and strings. The last is the second package, only will a hardshell case instead of gig bag, a stand and a string winder (don't need the winder at all). I'd recommend the middle package.

I just started playing the guitar and I have this guitar. It's 5 bucks above your limit but maybe someone could lend you 5 bucks for something? It's a really nice guitar for the price. This guy right here, Jasmine Takamine S35. perfect for playing just chords for a mic night, and surprisingly great sound for the price ($89!!). I got one just to carry around so I wouldn't beat up my nice Taylor. I honestly can say it plays better than some other guitars 3 times the price, if you are just using it for just chords. You will need an external pickup though, but with that extra cash you can get a decent one.

u/EvilRabbit817 · 1 pointr/Music

I just got this guitar for $80 with free shipping and am very pleased with it!

I've only been playing for about a year (started with an electric) but have gotten pretty decent with self-teaching. If you search around for "free guitar lessons" in google you'll find plenty of results (About.com has a decent one). There are also a lot of youtube lessons and a book with CD might be helpful if you want to learn how to read music.

I'd recommend going acoustic first if you're unsure whether you want to stick with it. I sprung for an OK first guitar (electric) and a decent amp since I knew I really wanted to learn. I've heard that electric is a little easier to learn but who knows if that's true.

Good luck getting started! I really enjoy playing to pass the time (when I have some)! Feel free to PM me or reply with questions, etc., although I may not be the best person to ask, lol.

u/Yeargdribble · 1 pointr/piano

I'm virtually always telling people not to do this because, basically, your parents a right. I've almost never seen someone with zero prior experience start up any instrument as a hobbyist and have the dedication to stick it out. Even those with private lessons just don't tend to make it. The older you are, the harder it is to make yourself work on things that are infuriatingly slow to progress. Add to this the time commitments of real life whether it's college or job, or whatever... you start putting it off for a day, then a week, then months.

The number of dusty guitars and other crap rotting in the corners of peoples' houses is distressing. You can also get on eBay and find things like virtually brand new, high-end wind instruments that are being sold complete with beginner books by those who thought they could do it, but ultimately couldn't stick with it.

It just takes too much time to get to a point where you can get something enjoyable out of it so people without a background and sense of direction give up very quickly.

If you want a hobbyist instrument, play guitar. At the very least, with minor diligence you can pick 3-6 chords and be able to play along with a lot popular songs while singing along. Sure... you'll be "that guy" singing Wonderwall, but at least you won't be struggling to play Hot Cross Buns or something similar on the piano while making a transition into college. Guitar will give you that instant gratification, not require almost any musical background, and will give you room to improve if you care, but won't brutalize you as much at the outset the way piano will. Also, very portable.

Here is an absolutely playable guitar that you can start with.

I see you have a guitar starter kit on your wish list and it's pretty and blue, but let me beg you not to buy that one! I had the same one because I just needed something cheap to learn on and I loved the color. It is the biggest piece of crap. It just simply fell apart! It was pretty much glued together in random places and not even playable. The strings either laid flat on the fret or didn't reach at all. I would suggest one of the following starter kits instead. They come with everything you need to get started . I know they're not blue, but at least they will last longer than one day :)

I started to learn on an old guitar that I found in my parent's basement with super high action (strings were high above the fretboard). It was awful. I got this one and changed the strings, and I've never had issues with it. I'm sure it's not the greatest but it sounds fine and is great to learn on.

Don't buy that. Never buy a guitar you haven't held in your own hands. But that should be the price range you're looking for.

Acoustics hurt the fingers but they make them stronger for when you want to start trying an electric guitar.

My tip for you, is to the hold the guitar at eye level horizontally as if it were laying on it's back. Look and see how far the strings are from the fret board at any given point along the guitar. They should be close enough that they don't hit anything but not so far that you have a hard time pressing it down all the way. (this is called the "action" of the guitar).

u/kent_eh · 1 pointr/Guitar

If it is a classical guitar, then I agree.

If it is a cheapie acoustic that is actually intended to be used with steel strings, then OP's friend should be good.

In that case, some of the reasons for the very high stings is that its cheaply made and probably not set up properly.

Jasmine S35 Acoustic (it's not acoustic-electric so it doesn't have any way to be plugged in). Down the line you may want to pick up a better guitar or if you like the sound of your acoustic guitar you could try picking up a soundhole pickup, installing a custom pickup, or if you're ambitious, doing a DIY pickup install.

You should! This subreddit definitely could use more content. It's clear that I take the quantity over quality approach, at least currently.

I don't use any special equipment. Just a computer with a mic and the program Audacity which is completely free.

The guitar I use is a Takamine Jasmine which is only $80 on Amazon with free shipping. I'm sure it doesn't compare to really expensive high quality guitars, but it's certainly better than nothing!

So don’t get the nylon string classical guitar. It is purpose built with its nylon strings and wide neck for classical music.

Acoustic-electrics are made to take acoustic sound and amplify it louder. An acoustic-electric still produces sound from its body like an acoustic guitar, so plugging it in won’t help make it quiet.

If you want to play acoustic, just get an acoustic. You can get a better guitar for less not spending extra on electronics you won’t use. You can play an acoustic guitar softly enough to not disturb neighbors, and if you want to play pop get a steel string guitar. Finger picking/strumming is great for pop music and can be played as softly as you like. This would be an example of a good starter Yamaha acoustic. There are some even cheaper ones too. Here’s an even more budget friendly starter pack

If you would prefer an electric guitar, they have solid bodies and produce noise though magnets called pick-ups rather than the shape of their hollow bodies via sound holes like acoustics and acoustic-electrics. An amp is required to project this sound from the pick-ups, and with a headphones you can direct all the sound to the headphones. You can technically play without an amp but it’s very quiet and doesn’t sound good. These are great starter guitars but you’ll need an amp and headphones.

You can also find cheap electric starter kits that come with amps from squire and epiphone.

Just to reiterate once more, an acoustic-electric seems like the worst choice for you because it’s sole purpose is to make the acoustic sound louder, which is the opposite of what you want. Get an acoustic or electric, but not an acoustic-electric imo.

I recommend the acoustic [Jasmin guitar]http://www.amazon.com/Jasmine-S35-Acoustic-Guitar-Natural/dp/B0002F58TG/ that you can find on Amazon for 80$. (US)

I bought it myself JUST to try it out to see if it was worth recommending to beginners. (I've been playing for 15 years now)

I think this is the perfect beginner guitar for many reasons:

  • it's dirt cheap (even if you have money and would like a nice guitar, wait until you know how to play, that way you will know what sound you like, and will be able to choose the perfect guitar for you that will last you years)
  • it sounds great for a guitar at that price. I've never seen anything like it.
  • it's an acoustic guitar so you don't need Anything else
  • you can bring it anywhere and not be scared to ding it. (Think playing songs in a park, on the beach, etc.)
  • It looks like a nicer guitar ;)

This is the perfect guitar to learn how to play your first songs.
Don't spend to much time choosing one and start learning!

    Cheers.

ps: how do you plan on learning ?
