Most dogs will not run around a yard unless they are playing either with another dog or their owner most dogs just chill out in the back yard when left alone. Without burning off some of that energy he's not going to want to pay attention during training.

Invest in something like this www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B072J4KCVP/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1497712677&sr=8-5&keywords=automatic+ball+thrower+for+dogs if your unable to keep throwing the ball for very long. Also not every dog likes every treat. Finding treats your dog likes even if it's just boiled chicken will help in training. Border collie are great at agility training you can buy a cheap starter kit for like $100 it will come with weave poles, a jump and a tunnel. Agility not only exercises them physically but mentally as well.

Looked at getting one for my mom and her little doggies. That thing is $115! Sorry mom, you can throw the ball yourself.

Ebay, new, shipped was less than $150. careful most of them toss smaller balls like HALF sized tennis balls. Gotta read the info. I have the PetSafe Automatic Ball Launcher Dog Toy.

Louis adores it and it's great mindless fun, but I wont use it more than once or twice a week. It's just so predictable and so repetitive that I find it hypes him up more than it calms him down; I usually have to end a session with some calming activities.

My overall conclusion is 20 minutes of fetch+training is a significantly better brain/physical drain than 15 minutes of the fetch machine and I probably only throw the ball half as much. However, 15 minutes of fetch machine keeps that dog so busy that I can get stuff done without a dog at my feet.

Depending on your dog I would also recommend finding a place to store it away from your dog. You also want to be around when your dog uses it to switch out slimy balls with fresh balls to keep the inside parts clean.

Would highly recommend. For dog owners that constantly have to throw a ball to keep their dog entertained, it's life changing. It's certainly saved me a lot of time and distraction... Not that I don't want to play with Winnie, but if I'm trying to get work done it's nice that she can keep herself occupied!

There's also shock, vibrating, and spray collars but I have no idea if they're appropriate for a dog that young.

brb while I find you one of these

You really wanna pay $115 to not play fetch with your dog?

We have one and it is a life saver on some days! When it is raining or snowing outside our pup needs a little bit extra of something to do and some additional running around, we use it for about 15mins and she relaxes afterwards (https://imgur.com/dNfTmCb).

They are not made well, and it will be hard to find one that is of good quality. We have had ours, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076P4LFGX/, for about 6 months, and it gets stuck a lot. We rotate different balls per session, to prevent her spit from getting into the gears, which is really what causes the problems with the engine.

Our girl catches the ball, brings it back in to the launcher over and over. I don't let her keep the balls after a playing session, because it uses the small 2" tennis balls, and she loves to chew on them, and destroy them immediately. Chewing on the tennis ball rough surface is not great for their teeth.

Edit: I would not leave them to play with it unsupervised.

Maybe this? I don't know how the machine reloads, but if it only means dropping the ball inside, theoretically he could learn to play with himself.

Aw :) yeah, it’s so difficult to find a quality one! I’ve heard good things about this one though!!!
