Surly says their 30 is the standard 29.8:

I called Cannondale tech support and they said you simply need to add a seat post collar rack mount to compliment the frame's rack mounts at the dropouts. 31.8mm diameter to match the seat post.

It's not plastic. It's the Surly Constrictor seatpost clamp. Also, semantics here, but it's a 30.0mm seat tube, not downtube. Surly uses that specific size, so you won't be able to replace it with a Thomson if they only come in 28.6 and 31.8. That said, replacing your seatpost clamp will make no difference whatsoever to your bike except aesthetically. If you really want a pimp seatpost collar, Hope makes them in 30.0.

Edit:
Just did some googling for you. Here you can get a Phil Wood 30.0 collar

Here you can get a 30.0 Thomson collar

The reply from /u/ericj4 is correct.

Be sure to get the right diameter, of course, but you might want an offset clamp. From your picture, it looks like your rack may not belevel as it sits now. An offset clamp would allow the front brackets of your rack to attach higher to help level the rack.

What you want to do is:

  • Remove the zip ties

  • Loosen the front rack brackets from the rack

  • Loosen the bottom brackets from the bike

  • Install the clamp

  • Attach front rack brackets to clamp loosely

  • Rotate the rack (allowing the front brackets to slide inside the rack) until the rack is level

  • Tighten front brackets to rack

  • Tighten front brackets to bike

  • Tighten bottom brackets to bike

Axiom DLX Streamliner Disc Cycle Rack, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004094HY2?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

I was able to mount this rack to my cyclocross bike which also doesn’t have any mounting eyelets on it. It worked perfect for me by putting the quick release skewer through the lower mounting points.

And then for the upper mounting points, there are two different options it comes with. Two adjustable arms for bikes that have the normal threaded eyelets on the frame behind the seat. Or a metal arm that bolts to the mounting point for normal brakes.

If you want to use the two adjustable arm option, you can buy a seat clamp that has threaded mounting points in it. Here’s that.

Here are some photos of my bike with both the rack and the threaded seat clamp.

Also, if you don't have seat stay mounts, you can always get this seat clamp with eyelets to mount the two arms for the Axiom Streamliner Disc. Just make sure that the clamp is the right diameter for your seat post.

u/pigcupid · 2 pointsr/bikewrench

Probably something like this. Any bike shop will have one.

u/appletart · 2 pointsr/bicycletouring

You could add a rack to that bike as the chainstays have mounting points, but you'd need a seatclamp like this as an addition mount.

Don't worry about "dedicated tourer", your bike's more than capable.

u/NoodleSnekPlissken · 2 pointsr/bikewrench

No, you'll probably need a new seat post, as opposed to the old style seat pole/pillar you have fitted to the bike currently. Hopefully it's not a weird size.

Modern seat post
Old School seat pillar/pole

You might get away with a Clamp for saddle rails but it's not an ideal way to do it, and proper seat posts aren't expensive.......

edit:fixed linkages

u/Statuethisisme · 2 pointsr/bikewrench

Is the clamp holding it to the post this type? If so, buy a kid's saddle and mount it.

Another possibility is something like this if the post is the correct diameter.

u/AWierzOne · 2 pointsr/bikewrench

I have the Axiom Mk 3 Alu Journey Uni-Fit, it only comes in black (but a little matte grey spray paint could fix that). I have it on a 26in MTB bike, and it took a few times of moving the rear wheel attachment to get it to be perfectly flat, but I've had no problems since. Also - you'll likely need a collar for your seat post that allows the rack to attach to it, like this. I'm not sure what you are envisioning from a design perspective, but it strikes me as relatively mundane.

This is what I just ordered a few minutes before you commented. Should I cancel my order, then? I'm seeing some conflicting information and now I'm a bit worried.

u/adyst_ · 1 pointr/bicycletouring

I second this. I just bought one of these for my bike. Check the size of your seat post and you should be set!

u/TACO-HELL · 1 pointr/UTAustin

Ideally you'd lock both of the wheels and the frame, but in a one-lock world, people tend to go with the front wheel because the rear wheel is somewhat more conspicuous to steal. One option is to remove the front wheel and lock the frame and both wheels with one lock, but that's kind of a pain in the ass to do.

Quick release wheels shouldn't be too much of a problem assuming they're locked up properly. The seatpost might be more of a concern--I would look into something like this as a sort of deterrent to seat-stealers.

u/sporkinum · 1 pointr/ElectricSkateboarding

Not a bad idea. Would need to use with lock washers so they don't vibrate loose. The nuts in use now are ny-lock. This is what i was thinking, https://www.amazon.com/MR-Jiang-Bicycle-Binder-Clamp-Release/dp/B013QA5H5S ,but it would require blind nuts of the appropriate thread. I don't know if possible as I think QR threads are 7mm.

u/Doctor_Spacemann · 1 pointr/motorcycles

this is super clever, very nice work. Looks like you could use some sort of tensioning mechanism though to keep the whole thing from rattling around. You could probably incorporate a [bicycle quick release](https://www.amazon.com/MR-Jiang-Bicycle-Binder-Clamp-Release/dp/B013QA5JOC/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1527071524&sr=1-5&keywords=bicycle+quick+release) or 2, into the cutting board. also you might want to add some small washers to the bolts that make contact with the plastic bits. I could see those bolts wearing through the plastic cutting board much faster than you might expect.

Guess I posted a little late to be seen yesterday, but I have some additional info anyway. Let's try this again.

Recently got a carbon fiber bike. Mostly planning to use it for local rides, but it's so much lighter than my hybrid that I'm really tempted to use it for touring next year. Even for local rides, though, I almost always need at least a small backpack to carry everything. It's not as big a deal in cooler weather, but for summer rides I really hate wearing one. Even wearing a Camelbak on my tour last summer got pretty uncomfortable at times.

I suppose I could always go for as big a saddlebag as possible, but ideally I'd like to be able to use a rack and panniers. The frame has no eyelets however, which is hampering my quest for a rack. My research so far has shown I can get a replacement seat post clamp with rack mounts, but finding something to go on the seatstays or axle has proved a little more difficult. I did find this rack that attaches to the seatstays, but reviews are mixed. Any thoughts on these or any other ideas/suggestions?

On a separate, but somewhat related note, does anybody have experience carrying u-lock/cable combinations on the frame? The mount that comes with it works well enough for the lock, but I have yet to find a non-awkward way to carry the cable as well, which is the main reason I've had to resort to a backpack.

Can you fit a removable replacement clamp underneath the broken one?

https://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Bicycle-Release-Seatpost-Mountain/dp/B074P38GQ2/ref=asc_df_B074P38GQ2/

This could work.

u/nudave · 1 pointr/cycling

The low hanging fruit here is the vertical seat adjustment. You can buy something like this (https://www.amazon.com/Ostart-Bicycle-Release-Seatpost-Skewer/dp/B00AXGJNW2) for a couple of bucks (note: not an endorsement of that particular one, just proof of concept) to get vertical seat adjustment without tools.

u/DonOblivious · 1 pointr/bicycling

You can mount a lot of racks to the brake bolt or an adapter that clamps on your seat post. Some bending of the mounting hardware will be required.

I wouldn't recommend a "seat post only" sort of rack for grocery shopping: most of them are designed for trunk bags carrying lighter loads. I wouldn't feel comfortable carrying the weight I do on a grocery trip using one of those.

>Anyway, since it's a huge bike I've had to get used to riding it, since getting off it it requires more of a flying maneuver than simply putting my foot down.

Given that the bike is the wrong size for you (unless you're 6'3"+), is grossly overweight, and is worth $150 max, you'd be much better off keeping an eye on Craigslist and picking up a slightly newer road bike in your size, rather than spending more time and money trying to make this one work.

A pad isn't going to help you much. It's just a question of whether you'd rather rack your nuts on a thinner harder bar (more painful, better odds of missing) or a thicker slightly softer bar (less painful, worse odds of missing).

I'm a bike mechanic in my spare time, and it always mystifies me how attached people get to their bikes, REGARDLESS of how inappropriate or poor fitting they are, when with a little time and a little money, a much better fitting and more useful bike could be had.

(That said, if you're determined to ride this, you'll probably want a seatpost clamp like this one - http://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Bicycle-Steel-Clamp-Chrome/dp/B000AO9QTM/ref=pd_sim_sg_1 , or if the seat itself is wandering around, you may need something like this - http://www.amazon.com/SBS-114102-Seat-Clamp-Silver/dp/B0017KDCR0/ref=pd_sim_sg_5 .)

u/DangerousGoodz · 1 pointr/homegym

Any cheap Bell or Schwinn etc seat available at a big box store should already come with the 7/8 clamp. Some higher end saddles don't come with the clamp but you can just buy it separate.

There's a couple of options to mount the rear rack clamps that clamp on to the seat stays Portland Design Works Payload and Loading Dock Rack Hardware Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A91JIJE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_M2HjzbYR6HWSQ
Or a seat post adapter Sunlite Bicycle Rack Seat Clamp, 34.9mm, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0014GI9RK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_s9HjzbFRCPMTC

As far as which one to buy there's a bunch of decent ones in that range I've used this one on a bike for years with one problem Topeak Explorer Bike Rack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FIE3WI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9-HjzbZFWZTYE

Axiom also makes done good ones in that price range.

u/Late2theGame · 1 pointr/bicycling

yeah, mine is like yours in that it mounts to the shock and travels with the wheel but i don't have the holes down by the skewers. I thought the zip ties were going to work for me as well (although i needed them on both sides) but on a really cold sub zero day they just became too brittle and snapped. I tried using velcro straps too but they were able to move too easily so ended up getting those big ugly U-bolts for now. Perhaps a much larger version of something like this.
