I've been looking at internet-enabled home devices (think Nest) and Cloud-anything has been a deal breaker for me EVERYTIME! Hell, the first-gen Nest's had the same issue - "Thanks for supporting us at the beginning, now fuck you! ;)"

I've managed to find some really nice hardware for my Thermostat, Sprinkler Controller (though I bought the 12-station controller) as well as hackable Wifi 120v (or 240v) light and switch controllers for $5-8 each!! And I totally forgot about my OpenGarage!

Each of these have open "REST" APIs that accept LAN requests to their local webserver (e.g. 192.168.1.15/api/do/something?key=secret&on=true) so they are wide-open to program against.

I would recommend a mid-range Chamberlain. E.g. something like this B970 for $250 which has a lot of nice features (quiet belt drive, battery backup for use during power outages, and wifi control if you want it). Installation is pretty straightforward (couple hours DIY, depending on how handy you are and whether you have a 2nd person to help).

You can get basic garage door openers for more like $150 but I think the extra $100 gets you some nice features.

No reason to spend any more IMO, and no reason to pay for someone to install it if you are just slightly handy.

Luckily, garage door openers have already thought of this.

There are cheaper models with battery backup available, but this is the one I got.

Overhead Door is the only company that comes to mind for any reputable company in the area. You can actually mod an existing garage door to do different things. I found some resources from Amazon a while back. I have a LiftMaster, so I saved this stuff for myself. I'm sure that you can find easy solutions similar to this. Greetings from Hanover.

Did you know Amazon will donate a portion of every purchase if you shop by going to smile.amazon.com instead? Over $50,000,000 has been raised for charity - all you need to do is change the URL!

As long it was made after 1998 all you need is to upgrade the wall panel with this and it will be compatible. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B8BFG0O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1SQ7AHQ56EE7X&coliid=I3IRD1MAAJ2IBA&psc=1

"The 888LM is compatible any LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Sears Craftsman garage door opener manufactured since 1998 with RED ORANGE or PURPLE learn button.
The 888LM is Not Compatible with Newer Security+ 2.0 garage door openers with a round YELLOW learn button and YELLOW Antenna.
Your existing remote controls and wireless keypad if your happy with them will also continue to work using the reciever in your garage door operator. There is no need to replace them.
When paired with the 828LM Internet Gateway, sold separately. You can control your garage operator with your smart phone, tablet or computer "

Not any opener... If you have one with digital signals over the wire to the opener instead of analog signals, it will not work. This is surprisingly a lot of newer openers. It would be any that have other buttons than the open/close button on the wall opener. (Like this one )

We just got an Chamberlain WD1000WF to replace our old sears opener from the 90's and it is really nice, it's so quiet the dogs don't even know we're home anymore.

Can someone please help me?

I have the following garage opener: Chamberlain WD1000WF 1-1/4 HPS Wi-Fi Garage Door Opener https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013UGZYOM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_pgfJzbNESY9AX

If i want to add homekit to it, do I buy only this new device or something else as well?

Thank you

Looks like per Chamberlain - myQ Home Bridge it'll work:

>Adds both smartphone control and HomeKit™ compatibility to:
>
>* LiftMaster and Chamberlain myQ-enabled garage door openers (has a myQ logo/no Wi-Fi logo)
>
>* LiftMaster MyQ Control Panel (model 888LM)

Note that you might be able to get even cheaper by getting an old liftmaster/chamberlain opener and a 888LM wall control and the home bridge.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 888LM works with other brands. (I'd check with a local garage door installer if they've tested this setup.)

I got the chamberlain whisper drive with wifi. I love that I can check to see if it's open, closed or even alert me when it does either. It comes with a battery backup too. I love it. My parents got it and love it too!

It took me 3 hrs to install and it syncs with the Nest for the home/away.

Edit: Added more stuff

I'm in the market to buy two new garage door openers for my house that currently has no openers... Do I need to get two of these openers that have have the internet gateway or can I just get one, and then get this opener without the gateway and have them share the same gateway?

u/TheAceMan · 1 pointr/homeautomation

I put in this one recently:

Chamberlain WD832KEVG Whisper Belt Drive Garage Door Opener with MyQ Technology, 1/2 hp, Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B7MFOR8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_mwv9wb51G4XN8

It is really quiet. I replaced a 12 year old Chamberlin. Most of the parts were the same. I installed in by myself in a couple of hours.

How heavy is your door? The one you have listed may be overkill. I used a 1/2 hp for my double door.

Also, the wifi connector is usually sold separately. I think it is included in the one I linked.

u/jjmy12 · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Many of the Chamberlain openers have MyQ/WiFi built-in, no need to add the external hub. I have two of the B550, very happy. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0758L67KP

I went the upgrade route on my Chamberlain, I bought this to replace the wall unit opener in the garage: https://www.amazon.com/Liftmaster-Security-Control-Upgrades-Previous/dp/B00B8BFG0O
And this is the wired gateway required to interface with the network:https://www.amazon.com/LiftMaster-828LM-Internet-Gateway/dp/B005FT4N2M
Works perfectly with both Wink & Smartthings
