Here's how you do it. Don't. Honestly, it's not worth potentially damaging the walls, as University Housing regulations usually have explicit rules about these things. Some even go as far as to say how you can affix posters and such.

Look into something like this or this if you're looking for something that won't take up space. Even though both can handle two bikes, you could always use the top rack and utilize the space below, or allow your roommate to use it as well.

You'll save yourself the time, potential repairs, possible fines, and be able to take this with you when you move into an apartment.

3M strips are your friend if you can't put anything into the walls.

u/FutureWaves · 12 pointsr/triathlon

Just buy a Clug. We use it for all our bikes and they work great.

Edit-Just make sure your tires are nice and inflated this is the only safety issue.

u/dickamus_maxamus · 8 pointsr/malelivingspace

Was having trouble with bikes all over the house, so I picked up a 3 pack of these neat little pedal hangers and they worked like a charm!

I live in a 750 sqft apartment. here is how i store my 29er and my road bike. http://imgur.com/0O7lJSX

the stand is by a company called "sportrack" but its just a rebranded Thule rack. it keeps the dirty bike off the ground and also looks cool. here is the stand.good luck on your quest. it took me about a year of bike shit all over to break down and finally buy this stand: https://www.amazon.com/SportRack-SR0012-Sportrack-Adjustable-Stand/dp/B00BCLKWYA/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479682590&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=sportrack+two+bike+stand

I love these, I have a super small apartment, and use these to mount my bikes on the wall. take some measuring and planning, but look great once you have them up.

u/brunhilda1 · 5 pointsr/BicyclingCirclejerk

Nice! I need a kickstand though; is this one compatible?

It is like this one: https://www.amazon.com/BIKEHAND-Mount-Bicycle-Stand-Storage/dp/B00BW4TP7C/ They hold the bike up between the rear hub and dropout. A small downside is that the front wheel is free to move.

u/Sonofa-Milkman · 4 pointsr/bicycling
u/eccentricfather · 4 pointsr/bicycling

Those are cool, I really like the look of them.
But I went with these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002BLMIQ/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Mainly because 1) They don't require any screws or drilling into the wall. As a renter who wants his security back, I like to keep holes to a minimum. 2) Like the the Cycloc, they keep the bikes parallel to the wall rather than perpendicular. This makes getting down that hall much easier. 3) They were relatively inexpensive.

u/threetoast · 4 pointsr/cycling

...just lean it on the wall? That's what I do with my bike.

Or you can get something like this.

u/flanl · 4 pointsr/cycling

I've got two of these, and they're great... but I'll be closely monitoring this thread bc I've got 5 bikes in a 1 bedroom and am fresh out of ideas on what to do w/ the other three.

u/hilomania · 3 pointsr/ebikes

On a side note. I always had kickstand issues with my first bike till I got a BV Kickstand. Bought another one. They are nice to work on the bike as well.

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y · 3 pointsr/bikecommuting

Maybe something that mounts on the chainstay. They also have kickstand that mount near the back wheel.

u/RenegadeP3NGUIN · 3 pointsr/ebikes

I didn't have much luck with those styles, I got a double leg off amazon.

BV Bike Kickstand, Center Mount Bicycle Stand - Length Adjustable, Foldable Double Leg for 24"-28" Bikes https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LNLXML4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vfmwDb97QR4X5

Highly recommend this guy! Also a chain stay protector hides those wire a bit by the handle bars. Happy riding!

u/alykait · 3 pointsr/DesignMyRoom

I love this bike storage clip called the Clug for my small apartment. It hold the bikes securely and you barely notice the clip when not in use. It's cheap too!

u/rtbhnmjtrpiobneripnh · 3 pointsr/ottawa

Bronson and Somerset is a hot neighbourhood for bike theft, and theft in general. I've had parts stolen off of bikes locked to my front porch. Don't take chances, find room in your apartment. I suggest a Clug , or a pair of Ikea Ekby Valter shelf brackets that you can hang it up on.

u/UpTheDownEscalator · 3 pointsr/bicycling

Photo of the room or similar space would help people give suggestions. Otherwise, for basic upright-storage I use this stand in my office.

u/CaptainMark86 · 3 pointsr/cycling

Just don't waste money on the Feedback Velo Wall Mount https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00H96DA00/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_EsDsDbV7J657Z I was sucked in by the marketing spiel on this one, let me tell you, what a load of crap, it actually protrudes from the wall more when using this mount than just placing it on the ground against a wall and it doesn't leave you with any more usable floor space.

u/znark · 3 pointsr/cycling

I got two Feedback Rakk stands. It has a swing arm that push the bike into. There are a few knock-offs on Amazon. Or vertical arm style. You can also get simple floor racks.

Have seen people post DIY stands in last month: wood and PVC.

u/Godmare · 3 pointsr/bicycling

I normally like Ikea hacks for several reasons, one of the most prominent being savings/value.
I use this rack and it's been great so far, and fantastically inexpensive.

u/iynque · 3 pointsr/bicycling

I use this one for $30: BIKEHAND Rear Hub Mount Bike Bicycle Stand Storage Rack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BW4TP7C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_KZggzb0WQYVHY

It looks good without a bike and is surprisingly solid and sturdy; I thought it was going to be a flimsy sheet of metal, but it's rigid as anything, even when I lean against my bike doing some light maintenance/repairs.

I guess the question is whether your time to build one is worth the $10 extra you'd spend on one like this 😆

u/deadflat · 3 pointsr/MTB

I bought these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004UDLVC4/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?qid=1422072021&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&dpPl=1&dpID=41CIdJH5gVL&ref=plSrch

They are easy to install, great quality, and the two holders can vertically be adjusted, so that the bike can be parallel to the floor, regardless of the angle of the top tube. I paid 20$ three years ago.

u/MeowMixExpress · 3 pointsr/bicycling
u/david_edmeades · 3 pointsr/cycling

I love the Velo Hinge.

I have a row of 3 (soon to be 4) in my very small laundry room.

u/thisismycle · 2 pointsr/Cleveland

I have two bikes, one I bought from Century Cycles, and another I got off craigslist for super cheap. The one from craigslist is my favorite, and there were a ton more on there that I loved. The one I got on craigslist goes for around $700 brand new, but I got it from the guy for I think around $280ish.

I also live in an apartment, and I bought one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UUEF7E/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 holds both bikes just fine, and they are both large sizes (for someone around my height - 6' 2")

EDIT: also get yourself a nice bike lock: http://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-997986-Black-Fahgettaboudit-U-Lock/dp/B000OZ9VLU/ref=sr_1_4?s=cycling&ie=UTF8&qid=1374593601&sr=1-4&keywords=bike+lock

u/random_seed · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I have two bikes on this, it works OK.

Edit: It might be made by aliens, though.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/FixedGearBicycle

Which bike stand is this, http://www.amazon.com/SportRack-BSR12-Universal-Bike-Stacker/dp/B000UUEF7E/ ?

How's the build quality?

u/deadmansstare · 2 pointsr/NYCbike

This is just an update to this thread, where a lot of us were looking for a way to store a bike in a small apartment.

I bought these for $6.25 from Amazon.

Used a stud finder to locate the joists, and drilled pilot holes into them. Screwed the hooks into place directly into the joists, made sure there was enough clearance to easily hang the bike, then locked the hooks in place with gorilla glue. Spackle, paint, and we're in business.

It turned out to be a minor pain in the ass because I had to drill twice to find each joist, and my first attempt left too much space between the bike and the wall (lots 'o ceiling holes to repair). The joists turned out to be metal instead of wood, and thus required another trip to the hardware store to get the proper tools to deal with metal joists. Overall took something like 2 hours?

e: here's a pic of the hook. the lumpiness around the hook is actually dried gorilla glue, which took longer than expected to harden and ended up getting real drippy out of the ceiling hole. I painted a bit of the hook as well so it blends in with the ceiling.

u/actiondan87 · 2 pointsr/recumbent
u/CuriousCurator · 2 pointsr/bicycling

There are storage solutions that doesn't require drilling anything into the wall (e.g. gravity racks that simply leans on the wall, poles that extend to the ceiling, etc).

u/Al_Redditor · 2 pointsr/bicycling

For $35 you can get one of these for your garage:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FLTZ26C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It works really well and I use it for washing the bike as well. When I'm out, I lean the bike against a rack, and if I have to leave it somewhere I lock it up.

u/jbisinla · 2 pointsr/LosAngeles

Just use one of these - https://www.amazon.com/Stoneman-Sports-DBR-9161-BK-Freestanding-Adjustable/dp/B000B91L6W

That way you don't have to put second-rate pedals and handlebars on your bike.

u/sir_earl · 2 pointsr/cycling

I use this in a garage with tight space. Works well enough for me. You might want some that stack vertically like this if you're really tight on space. You may be able to come up with a 3d printable design of a rack like this

u/Derigiberble · 2 pointsr/Austin

ANY bike lock can be busted fairly quickly with the right tools. For example this battery powered angle grinder would make quick work out of anything but the strongest U-locks or chains (Kryptonite NY Fahgettaboutit).

You aren't trying to make your bike perfectly secure; the trick is to make your bike more annoying to steal than the next bike down the row. When you lock up your bike on the go your goal should be to lock it better than another, preferably more expensive, bike also locked to the rack. At home, store it inside.

u/zeusiii · 2 pointsr/bicycling
u/LeastViral · 2 pointsr/mountainbiking

I bought them off Amazon. Make sure you get the pedal mount in the center of your joist and pre-drill the holes if you use the included mounting hardware. The screw head stripped pretty easily otherwise.

One of these: BIKEHAND Rear Hub Mount Bike Bicycle Stand Storage Rack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BW4TP7C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_rleJxb1PR3226

u/Mellema · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I have a Bikehand floor rack that works great. They list the max tire width at 2.4" but it works fine for my 2.8" tires...barely. Smallest I've used it for is 700x32 and it holds everything fine.

u/GangBruh · 1 pointr/MTB

really depends on how your dorm is setup. i could just put mine under my bed w/o turning handlebars or anything. i could have put it vertically to the wall with one of these but the mtb sized one

u/xObey · 1 pointr/MTB

Looks similar to this

u/jbrookeiv · 1 pointr/DIY

Looks cool. I was using these Clug mounts before, and, while they worked great, I couldn't stagger my bikes. Keeping them side by side took up way too much space.

u/kagoolx · 1 pointr/DIY

I want to mount a bike mount on my wall and I’m concerned whether it’ll be too heavy for the wall / screws to hold it. Can anyone help please? Details are:

  • Velo Hinge bike mount link - weighs 900g. Attaches with 3 (long) screws
  • a normal road bike will hang from it
  • The wall is either plaster or drywall, I can’t seem to figure out which!
  • I’ve successfully hung 2 guitar mounts from the same walls, each holding a guitar, and they’re rock solid with no issues, using just 2 standard screws for each mount.

Seems the bike + mount will be a bit heavier than the guitars are, but given this has 3 screws I’m thinking maybe it’ll be ok.

Do you have any advice please?

    Thanks

I have this one and it SUCKS. Tips over.

u/groghunter · 1 pointr/MTB

comment on furniture: after trying loads of different options, I just went back to wall hooks. you just save so much more space with them, rather than any other option. Take a look at something like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H96DA00/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

that one even tilts into the wall for more space savings.

u/SteenerNeener · 1 pointr/bicycling

If you're gonna drill, I can't recommend these guys enough. I use them now, but bought the free standing rack since I just got a set of carbon wheels and figure it's probably not safe to hang the bike by them.

If you're gonna hang multiple bikes, you need to be 2 stud lengths apart from each other so there's room for overlap, and you'll need probably around 40" of wall real estate per bike. I'd def. recommend drilling into studs.

u/sankthefailboat · 1 pointr/aww

Felt the same way, but it proved a little too challenging 12 feet up on our tiny patio :P They're on a bike hook tho so the nest is probably about two inches in diameter.

u/ovirto · 1 pointr/cycling

Are you looking for a minimal stand or something fairly sturdy where you’re very confident the bike will not fall? Not sure how light of a stand you need, but I use this one. It folds when not in use or for transport.

Bikehand Repacked Bicycle Floor Type Parking Rack Stand - for Mountain and Road Bike Indoor Outdoor Nook Garage Storage https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CW911SM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gTBHDb4XDCNZ7

u/smefeman · 1 pointr/bicycling

Not sure if you're set on doing something vertical, but if you can tolerate parking them on the ground I highly recommend the Bike Hand Bike Rack. I believe they make some dual racks as well, but I like the single ones for portability.

The mechanism works well to retain the wheel from front or back and it even works with my 2.4" knobby MTB tires.

u/Stone_313 · 1 pointr/cycling

Clug would allow you to "hang" your bike vertically.

u/ultimatetodd · 1 pointr/bicycling
u/boredcircuits · 1 pointr/bicycling

For example.

There's a lot of vertical wall mounts, but not many that pivot. This one only pivots in one direction, and getting the wheel in the hook is probably a bit trickier than with SteadyRack, just based on videos.

I'll probably end up getting 4 or 5 of these, whichever I choose, so the $60 price tag hurts.

This is the one ended up ordering on Amazon . It is a little different than ops but basically the same thing. You also just search 'Single bike stand' and of course you can probably just hit up a bike shop.

Is the wood that is inlaid in this brick-wall appropriate for bike hooks like these https://www.amazon.com/Avenir-Bicycle-Storage-Hooks-Card/dp/B00165Q4FS? The bike probably weighs between 25-30 lbs

u/WhoCaresSrsly · 1 pointr/france
