First off, unless you want to blow your cash to impress your guests with a visually startling piece of glass art, you don't need one of these fancy pretty ones. Functionally speaking, even one of those old milk jugs with the tulip-flared lip will work (you can buy a bottle of Paul Masson and just keep the bottle). But those are a little chintzy, so I'd spend $30-$50 or so and get one with a wide bottom.

Now, there are two main purposes of decanters: 1) to speed up aeration and 2) to limit sediment getting into your glass. Now, one thing to note here is that most wines do not have sediment. It's mainly older wines (the tannin compounds bind with each other and other particulate during aging and the settle to the bottom) that get it. Also, some unfiltered biodynamic/organic wines will sometimes have sediment when young, but they're rare. Anyway, the idea here is to pour from bottle into decanter carefully, leaving behind the sediment as much as possible.

The other common purpose is aeration, and this is only really necessary with reds, and only certain reds. If a wine is "tight", with lots of acidity, tannins, etc., and not really being very expressive, some aeration can help. The oxygen interacts with the wine and "opens it up". Again, this is not the case with all wines, but certainly with "big" wines, high alcohol, intense, opulent things, it is often beneficial, especially when they're young. Delicate wines like red Burgundy, though, don't typically want to be decanted, as their delicacy can be lost when aerated too much.

Anyway, so, if you're drinking a lot of tight, young red wines that you think can benefit from aeration (or even some older wines of the same ilk), then yes, I would say you should try one out. Again, though, you don't need to spend a ton of money on one of those sculptures you linked to. A simple wide-bottomed decanter will get the job done.

Also, this funnel-strainer both helps filter out sediment and speeds up aeration. I use one sometimes, and it's nice to have. Note that the link I included above is for the set that includes the strainer and the decanter. A pretty good deal, IMHO.

I'd be much happier with a new decanter, a nice wine key, and some cheese and cured meat.

EDIT: Wine shipping is super expensive and annoying, because you actually have to be there to sign for the delivery. So if you do ship wine, ship it to the office and not the gift recipient's house.

Are you talking about the bottle?
This is just decanter for sake with ice pockets.

Personally, i like the Hario decanter best https://www.amazon.com/Hario-HPDN-2T-Heat-Resistant-Decanter/dp/B002VP0X72/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1473950480&sr=8-8&keywords=hario+carafe. They're all pretty much the same, the Beehive one has a silicone lid, which helps keeping the coffee hotter for longer, but i don't think it makes much of a difference to the plastic one to be honest.

I have three decater at home. A regular one really cheap and massive one for when i invite friends at home so they can handle without caring if the would break it.

And i got this one:https://www.amazon.ca/Riedel-1430-13-Syrah-Decanter/dp/B000KJTFRK

It's classy, not too big and even if it's made for syrah they work well with everything. I use that where i work and it's easy to handle and it does not take too much place on a table.

It's almost 80$ on amazon canada but i got mine in for 39 CA$ in a boutique.

I was stoked to unwrap these as well. Bonus: zombie head decanter.

I have one of these, think we got it as a wedding present. I like it because we tend to drink wines with 5-10 years of bottle age (unlike most people under 35, I actually age my wine) and I don't want them to get as much air. We have a couple others that are more funky shaped, but that's the one I use the most.

But no matter what decanter you get, these cleaning devices are super clutch. Little water, a drop or two of soap and the decanter is clean as a whistle, and you don't have to worry about jamming a dish brush or some other odd object to get the scuzz out.

Also, re: lead - don't worry about it. The amount of time the liquid would have to sit in the decanter to actually get a measurable amount of lead is far longer than it will take you to consume the wine.

Why not get the best of both worlds liquor or for wine? In college we would buy some nice bottles for the start of the year party then we would just refill them with the cheapest shit we could find the rest of the year. You would be surprised how many people that only drink Grey Goose drink Popov just fine out of Gray Goose Bottle.

There are many crystal decanters that claim to be lead free.

Basically all of the ones by Ravenscroft on amazon claim to be lead free.

e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Ravenscroft-Crystal-W3082-Bishop-Decanter/dp/B001O4QHJY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1345058646&sr=8-3&keywords=lead+free+decanter

From your source
"One material that is commonly used to manufacture glassware and referred to as "crystal" is lead-free crystal glass. In lead-free crystal glass, barium oxide, zinc oxide, or potassium oxide are employed instead of lead oxide."

By using the definition "crystal" I may have been off, so I understand what you're saying, but what I meant was there are lead-free decanters that provide the same purpose.

I swear by this one. We use it at the winery where I work. You can taste the difference, it disassembles easily, rinses clean... I've never had any other pourer work as well and I've used several. It's pretty too.

So, I already have a french press. I was hoping that I could just use a my Kailta Wave or V60 and just brew it over a container similar to how a chemex works. I guess I wasn't the most clear by my description.

EDIT: I just looked into it and I think I found what I was looking for - It's a decanter! Here's a line to the amazon page

I'm with everyone else-- decant! Here's some decanters in your price range.

u/xrandx · 1 pointr/whatisthisthing

The spout isn't right but it's similar to a wine decanter. The idea is to expose as much surface to air as possible. This might be for whiskey.

u/grillworst · 1 pointr/Cringetopia

If I'm not mistaken, that is a wine decanter.
They come in all kinds of shapes, different for every kind of wine.

I picked out the Wells and Tino from Crate and Barrel. I like the Callaway a lot too, and I'll probably pick that up eventually. From Amazon I picked out this Godinger and this basic Bormioli. I'll go on the hunt for smaller bottles for amaro and bitters in-person somewhere this weekend - I'm going to check out Ikea and a local homebrew shop.

My FH's groomsmen are all drinkers so he bought them a scotch decanter

http://www.amazon.com/Bormioli-Rocco-Capitol-Decanter-23-75/dp/B0001UZOEQ/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1406907484&sr=8-7&keywords=scotch+decanter

He plans on engraving them with their initials.
