/u/ripshitup - with a $500 camera budget, you can produce video that looks like this:
Travel and Nature
Documentary
Slow Motion
...with a used Panasonic FZ200 camera, a fluid head tripod, an external mic and a decent audio recorder and a setup that looks something like [this] (https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPjHD74KVKGvxRfDnyjeFKkqiiinsjQxTz8k4GYZzWTHf38SZqoG7doGw16t4tT1A/photo/AF1QipNftMS5ujNIs1hmul_VbmCabL58vVWkgn6fxQOq?key=aDlyWlNPdGwtSFBTSGMyVWlfWG5VWG5tUm9SY3hR).
The FZ200 has a 24x constant f2.8 power zoom, 1080/60p recording, 720/120p slow motion and a mic input. It is a very good value for the money.
Here is the parts list for the setup:
For a total of $489.65, you should be able to tell your stories with high quality 1080p images and 24-bit/96kHz sound.
Hope this is helpful and good luck with your documentaries!
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but this headphone splitter should do the job just fine Link
Fair enough!
There are some pretty cool little gadget-y things on there too - like a phone holder for your car, cheap splitters, and USB Computer Vaccums!
Some random house stuff, like toothpaste pusher things, cute handcloths, head massagers (seriously, everyone needs these.), and silicone beer caps! :)
I am! This morning wasn't great, but I'm less than 4 hours from the weekend, so I'll take it! Thanks for asking :)

The one u/lifelongcaboose linked won't work because it's a combiner, not a splitter
splits any headphone jack into two ports so you can have twice the fun!
Since you play on PS4 you can use one of these plugged into your controller.

Plug the headphones in one side and the mic in the other.
For microphones, any 3.5mm mic will work. I use one of these because the mic attaches to the headphones.

But you can use any mic that has a 3.5mm jack. The zalman clip on mic is pretty common.
This will get you pretty good audio, however if you want to step it up a notch you can buy an astro mixamp.

That one works for PS4, PC, and is very popular. You would then plug your headphones and mic into the mixamp and not use the adapter linked at the top. This will also add in virtualized surround sound which is really good.
By headphone jack do you mean i need to get this? http://www.amazon.com/Generic-23-3-5mm-Jack-Splitter/dp/B001E3ZM8M/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1420072280&sr=8-7&keywords=headphone+jack
There is an audio in plug but whenever I plug in headphones, I get no sound.
This is what you're looking for.
