Not too much, I have a thermaltake with cherry brown MX which is my daily pounder for gaming or work, and it was 70 bucks. My deskop/printers/laptop/network stuff combined are around 7000 dollars. Here is a link to the blue because the brown is sold out, but don't buy blue, brown is the promised land mechanism.

You only need to spend about $50-60 for a good mech keyboard.
Example

144hz monitors cost a lot more, especially depending on the resolution, or if you want G-sync or freesync, or a TN or IPS panel.

The Tt eSPORTS Poseidon! is another option if you are looking for a fully backlit keyboard for the same price.

Absolutely. I'll add a few here:

T430 owner here - upgraded everything. I'm a developer by trade but also do a ton of spreadsheet work - things like scalability projections, cost/benefit analysis, budgets, etc.

Personal opinion time: the 14in sometimes feels small for this. I have a couple of LARGE monitors at my desk and if I'm doing even moderate spreadsheet stuff I prefer to work on my numbers there. If you're planning on utilizing JUST the laptop screen I would suggest the T430 100%, however I would also suggest budgeting for a larger monitor for use back at a desk for serious work!

I would suggest the 8G RAM for either as it will run modern Windows better - even on Win7 I have noticed a huge difference going from 4G to 8G of ram. Also everyone will tell you SSD is a great idea - these laptops do VERY well with a couple of simple upgrades =D

You may be able to save yourself some cost by buying something that doesn't have the upgrades yet and doing the labor yourself if you're comfortable. There are an insane amount of articles, videos, etc. for cracking into these things if you're comfortable doing your own work.

One other thing - 10 key. I would suggest getting a nice keyboard with a number pad for home too. I don't know how much data-entry you'll be doing but I LOVE the ability to 10 key when I need to!

My overall suggestion:

  • ($250-300 USD) T430 with 8G of memory and SSD
  • ($100-120 USD) 21"-ish monitor - something like this
  • ($55 USD) Mini-dock
  • ($80 USD) A nice keyboard with a number pad like this
  • ($20 USD) A nice mouse for desktop use like this (free scrolling mice are super nice when working with long spreadsheets imo)

PS: I also REALLY suggest the screen upgrade - it makes a HUGE difference and I found mine for around $40 USD. I feel that it was really worth it!

First thing that comes to mind would be the [TT-esports Poseidon Z] (http://smile.amazon.com/Tt-eSPORTS-Poseidon-Illuminated-KB-PIZ-KLBLUS-01/dp/B00HZE2PJS?sa-no-redirect=1). Although you can probably get a keyboard for cheaper if you wait for a Monoprice keyboard sale, they often go down to 40 USD

What about this?

u/Crow_of_War · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I've had Cherry Reds, Blues, and Kailh blue switches.

Order of recommendation

Cherry blues for the feel and durability.

Kailh blues for the sound.

I cannot recommend Cherry Reds. I HATED them. I had a Quickfire TK and while i loved the layout, I hated the Red switches. They're too soft and if you're heavy handed they will press very easily on accident. I spilled a Gin and Tonic on it the other night. Like 5 nights ago. I haven't reassembled it yet to see if it works after putting it in a dehumidifier.

My first mechanical was a Tt eSPORTS Poseidon Z but the spacebar switch stopped working so I'm in the process of desoldering all the switches on it. I'm going to get some Blacks or maybe Browns for it. Just something I haven't tried yet.

u/iBrap · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

How about the TT eSports Essential with MX Blues for $75. I used it for over a year at work and had no issues with it. Great little keyboard for the office.

u/SnugglyBoof · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Hey there. I can't speak for the other keyboards, but I want to point out something about the QuickFire Pro, cause I bought one of these last year; the LED backlighting on that board is only for the left side. I guess they wanted to save money or whatever and the only light up the "gaming" part. Just keep that in mind.

Also! If you're interested in a lower-priced brown-switch board with lights, have you checked out the tt poseidon? http://www.amazon.com/Tt-eSPORTS-Poseidon-Illuminated-KB-PIZ-KLBLUS-01/dp/B00HZE2PJS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394032428&sr=8-1&keywords=tt+poseidon

I mean, I haven't bought one. So I don't know how great it is. I just... it's not as expensive so... I'm cheap. That's what I'm trying to say here.

u/UWot69 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you want literally the same feel as a razer blackwidow minus the gigantic ass case, get a Poseidon Z keyboard (http://amzn.com/B00HZE2PJS)

But honestly, the blackwidow's switches just feel like reds with a click on my old one (it wasn't something I noticed until I got the cherry blues.)

The blues are more satisfying, have a much tougher bottom out, vs the rather mushy razer's.

u/Henessey1993 · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I've looked all over the internet and searched reddit extensively, but I couldn't find the answer to this question

Are Cherry MX Keycaps Compatible with Kailh switches? I bought a Thermaltake eSPORTS Posideon Z w/ Kailh Blue Switches and would like translucent keycaps for WASD and the arrow keys.

Edit: Correcting the brand.

I'm going to be getting a new keyboard this summer. I'm a FPS gamer and this the keyboard I will be getting. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014W3FGYU/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

But if that too much, this the keyboard I currently have https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZE2PJS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a really good keyboard the only issue is the keys seem to not response to my press. Example when I press 3, it would have to press hard on it. But to be fair, I do eat over my keyboard and do other other which could be the reason.

Ok so I just built my first gaming PC and I'm looking to replace my 4 year old $35 Saitek keyboard. Budget this time will be around $100 unless it's amazeballs and perfect for me, then maybe another $50. I live in the USA and there aren't many stores that carry mechanicals that I can try. The only ones I've found in stores are the Logitech G910 Orion Spark, which I liked the look and features of but the keys felt like any other keyboard, a TT eSports Poseidon Z that was alright, but I want a wrist rest and red or white lights (my computer is a red/black theme with red LEDs), and a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate that was my favorite for feel, but I've heard bad things about their keyboards and would go for the chroma if I took it. I've also been looking at the Cougar k700 because I like it's styling, the extra raised wrist rest, and few extra macro keys.

Before this computer I had been mostly using laptops as my computers, so I'm used to my wrists being about level with the keys and want a wrist rest (but I could always buy a separate one). I would like clear feedback that my keypress has been registered, but an audible click isn't really necessary.

I'm open to the idea of going to a tenkeyless, but it's not necessary.

TL;DR - Want a keyboard for gaming that will go with my PC's red/black/white theme. Limited switch samples, liked the Razer Blackwidow Ultimate the best. Wrist rest is favored. Newegg is favored ($20 gift card). Open to TK. Budget around $100 USD. Will buy in USA.

u/Boustany · 2 pointsr/buildapc

There are some keyboards that are only plug and play for Windows and would require a separate driver that is not officially released by the company to work on other operating systems. For example, I have this keyboard and I know from my brother's Mac that it does not natively work on it even though it does on Windows. Hope this helps!

I'm comparing them now and just want your opinion as well.

For the mouse you don't need to spend a bunch of money to get something good, here's the mouse my friend uses. http://www.amazon.com/E-3lue-EMS109BK-Precision-Control-1600dpi/dp/B005CPGHAA/ His only complaint is he can't turn off the LED on it, which could be a problem if you don't like it. You could spend a bit more for a better mouse such as the Deathadder or Steelseries Rival (I personally own the rival, great mouse)

For keyboards, it's up to you if you want mechanical or membrane. Mechanical will be more expensive but it's nicer to type on and feels better. This is a very basic membrane keyboard, it works. Here is a good mechanical. (FYI it doesn't use the standard Cherry MX keyswitches most mechs use, although they still feel better then membrane). You can also look at Corsair's keyboards, Corsair's, and other manufactures mechanical keyboards.

For the monitor I'm assuming you want something decent, 1080p, 60hz? Here is a 24 inch 1080p 60hz monitor, you could look at cheaper ones too. It really depends on what you want. I use 2 23 inchers that I got for $100 and they work fine for my uses.

Good luck!

u/dsac · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

looks like the Amazon links for me are Amazon.ca (I'm in Canada, so that makes sense), but NewEgg is still showing US prices.

For me, the Thermaltake is $108 on Amazon.ca, still cheaper than the G.Skill @ $129

u/DyLaNzZpRo · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Found a couple.

TTe Posideon Z, Azio MGK1, the G710 also goes on sale quite a lot.

The Posideon Z has a non-standard bottom row and IMO looks meh, uses either Kailh or Otemu (both blues) switches (I assume it's the former).

The MGK1 looks quite solid and it has a standard bottom row along with white LEDs and a wrist rest, only real "downside" is that it uses Kailh switches, which really aren't "bad" just they're not as well known, Kailh blues more specifically.

The G710 uses Cherry MX blues, but it also has a non-standard bottom row and IMO looks too 'gamery'.

u/lolboonesfarm · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I have [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Tt-eSPORTS-Poseidon-Illuminated-KB-PIZ-KLBLUS-01/dp/B00HZE2PJS) keyboard and I love it. It is rather loud but I think it feels great and it looks great!

u/tangerinelion · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I'd really discourage the choice of keyboard, mouse, and monitor you've made. $193 on keyboard and mouse is proving to be quite a lot and contributes absolutely nothing to the performance. That's 18.5% of the build cost without keyboard/mouse.

And in order to obtain that keyboard/mouse you've selected a low end small monitor, just 21.5". I'd really suggest 24" or bigger for the primary monitor.

There are much cheaper mechanical keyboards so long as you're willing to drop the RGB lighting (a gimmick, IMO). I have one of these with brown switches and it's totally fine. Assuming you go with blue switches, that right there just saved you $90 which means you can now afford a $190 monitor.

The monitor is commonly ignored, for some reason. It's the part that should last the longest in the build and it's the only part of the build you really stare at. At this point you sort of have a choice, though. You can get a cheap 1080p monitor with the understanding you'll upgrade to 1440p / 4K soon and can keep it as a second monitor. Or you can get a good 1080p monitor and stay at 1080p for a while. There's nothing inherently wrong with 1080p - it's not like games look pixelated.

The mouse choice I really don't have any complaint about, it's just you really need to be sure that you're comfortable with a wired mouse. The cord, IMO, is very annoying and it's much easier to use a wireless mouse. Depends on your particular needs, but good wireless mice don't really introduce lag like they may have back in the day.

u/Lazarite · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

The deal on the Ducky Shine Zero you linked looks very good considering its price compared to the Poseidon Z. I would be the first to recommend the Poseidon keyboard due to my positive experience with it, however its initial draw for me was the price. I picked mine up for 60 USD after rebate. That 105 AUD price point for the Z mindbogglingly overpriced.

If you can, try pick up the Z from a US website like Amazon. Here was the link I was referring to.

Regardless, the price of that particular Ducky Shine Zero is very good. If you can't be arsed to bother with shipping the Poseidon from the US, picking up the Zero would still be a great choice.

Edit: Opps, didn't see that your question is about the switches. The consensus on the reliability of Kailh switches is uncertain. They simply haven't been out for long enough to determine. It is a matter pricing right now. Kailh switches require slightly more (~5 g) pressure to actuate. I have heard anecdotal stories of people preferring Kaihl to Cherry MX. If you can get the Thermaltake board for cheaper, then it would also be an option. At those prices, go for the Ducky.

u/trompiston · 1 pointr/keyboards

My friend has this. It's more gaming orientated which I'm personally not a fan of and I don't really care for how the keys feel but I'm use to using a mechanical keyboard. This one looks pretty nice and is mechanical with blue LEDs. It comes in Brown and Blue Switches (blue are more gaming orientated but are very loud, brown is more in between gaming and regular typing and is not a loud as blue but you can always put o-rings on the keys to damper the sound) but it's at least double your budget.

There might be better/cheaper options on newegg.com but right now the site is down.

Last year I bought this keyboard from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Tt-eSPORTS-Poseidon-Mechanical-KB-PIZ-KLBLUS-01/dp/B00HZE2PJS

A few weeks ago it started giving me issues. When I tap the space bar, sometimes it doesn't work at all, Other times it double spaces. I have the same issue with the . and the , key.

Is there some key cleaning that might help the issue, or are the switches going on me?

u/trucekill · 1 pointr/linuxquestions

I bought one of these a couple months ago. I got one with quieter Cherry MX Browns because I use it in the office, but it's got everything I need for a Linux workstation. The media keys can be accessed with a fn key.

Wish it had a tux logo instead of the windows logo tho...

u/Huskyhunter · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I got this for $55 and I really like it, the only problem is that they are not Cherry MX's, they are Kailh switches. They are fine, just a cheaper version of Cherrys.

u/bianco94 · 1 pointr/GlobalOffensive

Bought this one a year ago: Thermaltake Poseidon Z Blue;
Amazing keyboard, worth your money :)

u/Raven0520 · 1 pointr/streamtown

The Poseidon Z is the cheapest backlit mechanical keyboard you can get, or at least it was last summer when I bought one. The reason it's cheap is because the patent for MX Cherry Keys expired, so it uses knock off Chinese keys. After owning it for over half a year, no issues at all. I don't know why it isn't in the /r/MechanicalKeyboards sidebar guide.

u/AutomaticNarwhal · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

The CM Storm QuickFire Rapid (the one in the picture) is actualy pretty affordable at $90 USD. You could also get the Tt eSPORTS Poseidon Z for only $80 USD if your okay with non-cherry switches.

u/pakjones · 1 pointr/buildapc

I can't give any first hand advice as my mouse/keyboards aren't quite in your budget, but looking around a little bit this is what i would suggest if you want to stay at ~100.

This is a mechanical keyboard with kailh blue switches, the switches are admittedly not as good as Cherry MX's but none the less cheaper and a huge step up from a non mechanical keyboard.

u/Depariel · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

If you want clicky, the Poseidon Z seems to be a fine option. My brother-in-law bought one the other day and loves it so far.

If you want TKL with macros and you're fine with red switches, check out the Monoprice macro keyboard.

If you want something big and bulky with browns (and o-rings!), look into the Logitech G710+. It semi-frequently goes on sale for $100, occasionally less. A friend of mine absolutely swears by his.

u/Torryy · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

I'm brand new to this, and kind of want a keyboard that isn't shit. I've been using an apple wireless keyboard forever, and so I have no idea what to get. I want to keep the price down to around $50 if you can. I found this, but I don't know if there's something better for around the same price. I'd prefer it to not have the extra numberpad on the side but I can deal with it. Also I kind of want it to be backlit for whatever reason, think it looks cool and more usable in the dark.

1700ARS is ~$121, converted anyway. Whatever site you're looking at seems overpriced as hell. Look for Tenkleyless (a.k.a. 85% or 87 key) or 60% keyboards, like the Poker or Quickfire Rapid, maybe you'd be okay with a cheap Outemu switch keyboard.

u/Natemit · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

the Thermaltake Poseidon Z is from what I've heard a pretty decent keyboard. I would have gotten it had Newegg not put the RK9000 (which is great by the way) on mega-sale. The Poseidon Z uses Kailh switches, not genuine Cherries, but the same caps will fit it and they feel about the same. You'll only have to spend about $26 out of pocket. Like that other guy said, the Quickfire is also a good choice, although I think the K70 is ugly AF.
