This is what you need. They use
these at dealerships. They have a foam head that won't scratch the paint. Just have to make sure you don't get excess ice buildup.

I love Larry but some how he managed to make snow removal very tedious. That snow broom he has I don't know what varient but it looks awful. The real snow-joes have a thicker foam pad on the edges so it can properly pull snow without bending back and dig into the deeper amounts.

I typically try to get as close to the paint as possible. Windows I just clear them completely with the snow-joe/broom thing. I drive the remainder off and it's usually off within the first 2-3 blocks before I get on the main road. If it's heavier snow then it'll blow off when I get on the main road and not cause a fuss compared to the 50 SUV's who didn't clean off their roofs at all and I've got chunks of wet snow flying at me.

Look into getting one of these. Makes life so much easier, especially with the heavier dumps.

Also, if you have my luck, you'll probably find the one rock in the middle of it all and launch it through your windshield or something.

Car stuff: No chains needed. Snow around there gets cleaned up very fast even with major storms. Snow shovel for sure. Get an ice scraper for the car. You might even get a snow broom just so you aren't that ass that has tons of snow and ice blowing off their car on the interstate (basically it just makes it easy to pull off most of the snow on your car if you park outside).
Keep your tank at least half full just for safety and make sure you have oil and use the orange RainX wiper fluid.

Footwear: Get a solid pair of ankle length hiking boots. I like these bad boys. I will wear them when shoveling or getting in the car and then quick swap them out for work shoes. It depends on what you are doing for work. Plenty of folks wear them all the time. I just have to wear dress shoes for work.

Gloves: Get a solid set of ski gloves. Your hands will thank you. I use nice leather gloves for going to work but I use Outdoor Research gloves for hiking, shoveling, etc.

General winter stuff: Get a good snow shovel if you have anything you need to shovel. Metal or at least plastic tipped with metal. Not those flimsy plastic junk tier shovels. If you have a driveway of any length either get a plow guy, get an actual gas powered snow blower, or be ready to shovel a bit. In RI and MA it is usually not that bad but you will get a few big dumps a year.

If you live anywhere rural just throw an actual short handled flat shovel or one of those collapsable military ones in the back of your car and a moving blanket just in case you really get stuck. In most urban/suburban areas it isn't really crucial.

Hi, I'm new to the sub so forgive me if the question is a little dumb.

I live in the North East (Boston). Unfortunately, the snow has already started. I picked a brand new X1 last week. I also do not have a garage and have to park outside. I am trying to figure out a way to remove snow from my car without damaging my paint too much.

I read in the wiki that the recommended way is to use a microfiber towel draped around the snow brush.

What about the snow brushes which claim to not damage paint - aka the soft spongy ones , like this ? How bad is this when compared to the recommended method ?

Not at all. I use this with great results every winter, and no paint damage

Something like this works a lot better for getting snow off. It works really well for deep snow. I used a scraper/brush combo for 10 years and the first time I used one of the Snow Joes/Snow Brums it was orgasmic. All of my family have them now. If you live in a really snowy area like Minnesota, Michigan, Colorado, etc. it is totally worth it. You still need a regular scraper, and I still find the brush useful for the little crevices, but they are totally worth it. They also don't hold snow so they don't end up melting all over your floors.

Buy a foam snow brum or equivalent it works loads better than the bristled brushes.

I have read that the brooms (with pads) are better than the brushes. However, for an extra level of protection, you could also wrap a microfiber towel around the broom pad. Also, remember not to put too much pressure while removing snow.
