Check these out. I was having the same problem. Bought this and it's helped significantly. The package only comes with 1 but you can very easily cut it in half and it still provides plenty of coverage where you need it.

This is weird..

I went to a podiatrist for similar reasons -- car wreck caused tendons and ligament tears and I am trying to heal.

I was in a walking boot and they gave me a soft brace after.. all provided .. and I am bigger than you ....

They had to adjust the walking boot and add a piece in the front where the Velcro goes to help it be more comfortable.

This is the brace they put me in

ASO ankle braces. You can get them on Amazon for around $20ish each. I have weak ankles and after breaking my foot terribly in 2007, I've been using the same 2 braces for about 10 years now and they're still going strong.. Highly recommended! I haven't even had as much as a medium to severe ankle roll while wearing them.

Putting them on every time you play is time consuming as it adds 2-3 mins to whatever time it already takes you to get ready, but it's far better than the alternative. Especially in my case!

u/Noveson · 7 pointsr/nba

Shoes aren't what's going to protect your ankles, buy an actual brace.

These are what Curry uses

These are supposed to be nice too. I think Andy Roddick uses this one

If you really need ankle support, get something like this.

u/nikomad · 5 pointsr/Ultralight

I have an awful right ankle that twists super easily, but was determined to start walking in trail shoes. I got the trail shoes but started carrying around an ankle brace just in case - this guy here

Last year I was trekking in Norway and rolled my ankle at the end of the day, it was cold and wet and we were walking downhill on a ugly path covered in slippery tree roots.

This was my ankle in the morning

With the brace I was able to continue walking for another three days, despite the gigantic ankle.

Recently did a 120km loop in NZ and wore the brace the entire time (I rolled my ankle again a week before the hike) , didn't cause me any problems - I'm starting to wonder if I'll just have to accept my ankle is useless and hike in the brace permanently.

Anyway tl;dr - have messed up ankle, wear attached brace almost permanently when hiking with no ill effect.

u/Sprun24 · 4 pointsr/NewSkaters

Yeah the canvas is too thin. Unless you get some real hightops like Jordan 1's your aren't going to get any meaningful amount of support. I have an ankle brace I put on my ankle if it starts to hurt. This is the brace I have.

Depending on how tight you get it it can impact ankle motion, but it isnt enough to really affect how I skate. Plus you can wear whatever shoes you already have/like.

u/sarahkittyy · 3 pointsr/hockeyplayers

I'm a figure skater who used to get pretty bad lace bite on my ankles... I use these, exactly the same thing as the Bungas but way cheaper. And it's 10" so I cut it in half like you said but it covers way more. I'll never skate without them now, they're so comfortable!

u/neurospex · 3 pointsr/NewSkaters

So funny thing about ankle support... that little bit of material on mid and high tops doesn't actually prevent injury. It may even lead to a higher chance of injury thanks to reduced sensitivity as well as relying on a sense of protection that isn't actually there. The only thing that will actually support your ankles in a way that prevents injury are actual ankle braces.

Skateboard tricks use a lot of ankle motion, and I would recommend sticking with low top shoes. In addition, I would recommend looking up ankle exercises to help strengthen your ankles. This not only helps you prevent injury, but will improve your control.

u/JessIsAOkay · 3 pointsr/FigureSkating

If you go to a pro shop they can punch out that spot. My right ankle is super pointy and in new skates it feels exactly like you described, as if the bone is being pushed into a hard wall. I left it on the punch out device overnight and the pain has been gone ever since.

If you don’t want to go that route, a gel sleeve might do the trick. This one is half the price of the “Bunga” brand, and you can just cut it in half to make two sleeves.

Good luck!

u/LeggingsAreMyJam · 3 pointsr/rollerderby

So I had a bad ankle sprain back in Feb. The one thing I found was working it (stretching, walking, skating), helped immensely. Another thing I'd recommend is if you're not already, wear an ankle brace every time you lace up your skates. I use one similar to this. I refuse to skate without it because it makes a huge difference in my side-to-side mobility.

Lateral movement is going to be a bitch for a while though. Know your limits and don't push yourself too hard where you end up making it worse.

Good luck!

u/ladyrainicorns · 3 pointsr/Rollerskating

I wear half crew socks, they come up just past the top of the boot. I also tend not to lace the boot all the way up for more flexibility. If I do want to lace them all the way up, I flex my toes towards my shin while I lace them up, so I know I'll be able to get some flexibility in my ankles. I also just got [these] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0791SG9BX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_cFO4AbFZQ4960) to prevent some ankle chafing. Haven't had a chance to really test them out, but I'm impressed so far.

u/lariog · 3 pointsr/bjj

I have the same problem. I got me some of those. I knew I had to face the public opinion at my club for wearing those but so far that's the best option I have come by. I don't wear them every day to try and make my upper feet tough but if it is too open/bloody it is a good alternative to tape so far.

u/lilpele · 3 pointsr/bootroom

There are ankle guards that they sell. Like these https://www.amazon.com/Adidas-Shield-Protector-Soccer-Football/dp/B00S0LQ6Z4

You just slip em on, though I'm not sure how it'll affect your movement and ball control.

u/elektroesthesia · 2 pointsr/ehlersdanlos

I have compression braces for ankles, knees and elbows, all of which I bought with approval from my therapists (OT and PT) from Amazon (link, link, link) They help me feel more stable without limiting my RoM too much. I also have hard braces for wrists that OT made for me, I'm hoping after my tendinosis heals a little that I can switch to something softer like a compression glove or something.

u/burnie08 · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

I have the same issue. I use the Bunga pad ankle sleeve and it works like a dream. I’ve had mine for over a year and it’s still holding up with ~2 skates a week.

A bash guard will not protect your pant legs. Tuck your pants into your socks or invest in the innumerable solutions to keeping your pants out of the chain-line.

The 5-bolt 94mm BCD is not popular and I can not find anyone who is making after market bash-guards. If you REALLY have your heart set on this solution your best bet might be to try and find an old chainring in the right bolt pattern and grind the teeth off. OR contact a small manufacturer like BBG or any machine shop to make you a one-off custom guard. You will also of course need new chainring bolts and spacers for any bash guard you add.

u/hivemind_MVGC · 2 pointsr/LARP

>I need boots that are stiff around the ankles.

They're definitely not that. There's an easy solution, though. Just get yourself a pair of these: http://www.amazon.com/Mueller-Adjustable-Ankle-Stabilizer-Black/dp/B0027VKR5S/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1382963753&sr=8-5&keywords=ankle+brace

and wear them under your shoes. When you make the last of your foot for Sodhoppers, do so with the brace on.

This is what I do for fighting SCA in turnshoes.

u/HockeyCoachHere · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

I got a pair of sock sleeve things with an integrated gel pad. I used it for a similar thing on my heel, but it worked great. It might help, try it out.

Here, this one is designed for that, i think:

https://www.amazon.com/ZenToes-Protection-Malleolar-Sleeves-Splints/dp/B0791SG9BX/ref=sr_1_6

u/Tossmeoutatwork · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

I got a pair of these (https://www.amazon.com/Absolute-Bunga-Pads-Ankle-Sleeve/dp/B000289XWQ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=bunga+pad&qid=1556205967&s=gateway&sr=8-3) when I retired my first pair of skates because the stiffer boot was putting more pressure on my ankle from the top of the boot. It's just a bit of gel padding and stays in place pretty well

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

i need this because i have bad ankles and hurt them alot mostly just the one, 7 times in 4 years >.<

u/Hella_Potato · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I would suggest a few things.

  • Get an ankle "boot" style brace. They are great, as you can't always count on the terrain to be kind to you. If you turn your ankle on a hike/run these are pretty much indispensable for stability and support.
  • A rain poncho is the bees knees when it comes to hiking, especially depending on location!
  • I find these Water Filters handy for when I am going on runs in the forest. I used to carry one when I worked as a ski instructor, they are the best if you don't want to have to haul around a bunch of gear!
  • These. The longer you hike, the more you will chafe. These are your best friends.
  • Finally, socks. I can't recommend what style is good for you, because I don't know what you're working with in terms of actual boots/shoes, but I like Underarmor and Merino boot socks both for support, and also fluffy amazing comfort.

    Happy trails!
u/Freestyle_Skater · 2 pointsr/rollerblading

I recommend trying both of these together.

Only go if you you really want to be sure it's not broken, that way they can complete an x-ray. I have sprained my ankles alot playing indoor soccer over the years so if it were me, I'd probably RICE rest, ice, compression, elevate, until symptoms like swelling and bruising go away. I really recommend the ASO ankle brace but also caution not to wear it all the time, you don't want to decrease mobility of the joint.https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00XP3YB6I/ref=zg_bs_5006362011_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=ZQ6WP9XX7WK1MXRXB8HN

u/Vubor · 2 pointsr/NewSkaters

I sprained my ankle once and for the first week I was like nah it will go away. Well it didnt, so I went to my doc and he said, yep 4 weeks atleast pause! I had a support sock (something like this! https://www.amazon.com/Protle-Adjustable-Compression-Support-Silicone/dp/B079Q91R9C/ref=sr_1_9?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1539222662&sr=1-9&keywords=ankle+support) and atleast for just walking from point a>b was totally fine. But I didnt skate for the whole time, so I dont know how it will/could work when skateboarding.

u/missjennielang · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

These are the exact gel sleeves I wear on my ankles but I’m a 5’1” woman so I get two out of this, you cut them to fit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JFTW43I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9QjwCbW7EP9EY
I get an identical sleeve for toes, it’s just smaller. Ballet shops sell the best quality ones but try some cheap Walgreens ones first.

Most of the products listed here are very high quality things to address foot pain & help customize shoes. Gaynor makes an adhesive foam pad for the toe box of pointe shoes that works well for the toe box of hockey skates. Toe tape is another option if the toe sleeves are too snug. You can find the same products but usually lesser quality (also often thicker) at Walgreens/Walmart/etc https://www.discountdance.com/dancewear/accessories/page1?rfilter=Category%23Accessories%3ASubCategory%23Accessories%21Pointe+Shoe+Accessories

I like my skate a little snug bc I grew up figure skating and it’s what I’m used to. But unless you want to spend gobs of money or hit up every used hockey shop for that Cinderella pair a little DIY customizing & shit on your feet can go a long way.

If I was you and I couldn’t return that pair I’d use some of these options until I got that perfect pair.

I use these Ace bandages:

  • Knee brace
  • Ankle brace

Also, like I said, these are to support the types of injuries that usually require SAR to be involved. You obviously want small items for things like blisters, cuts and stings that those guys don't usually deal with.

EDIT: Here's the link to that comment in the AMA with the search and rescue personnel.
u/ThinkNuggets · 1 pointr/rollerblading

Hah - that's a fair point for sure, and something I thought about. As a matter of fact, I originally chose the Maxxums because I liked the idea of the control of the hard boot I was used to from my old skates when I was a kid (the Rollerblade Lightnings with the yellow wheels) combined with the modern large wheels and frame. And to be sure, they are great.

That said, I've decided I want to do longer distance type stuff... I'll still have use for my 'urban' Maxxums, but after 10 miles or so they start to hurt, and it's the kind of pain that really makes me think it's the boot -- it doesn't get tired like musce fatigue and as soon as I remove the skates the pain is gone. Combined with the fact that I now know I should have gone a bit bigger and I'm pretty sure that it's the boot just pressing in to my ankle (lower ankle, on the inside, the 'inner nub bone' lol). It sort of feels like shin splints, but the pain stops the second I take the skates off, and just putting my hand in there I can feel the hard spots where it hurts my feet. I should add I tried a "Malleolar Ankle Sleeve" with pads on the ankles right where my skates hurt (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00777MVP6) and they helped a little, but not enough.

So you could be right, but having seen (but not tried - too big a size difference) my friend's soft boot (but still high boot with some support) they look like they'd be perfect. Am I right in thinking the Tempest boot looks similar to the K2 VO2 100 boot?

Also to answer the question earlier about my skills/experience with skates... As a teenager in the 90s I used rollerblades for my main transportation. Never wanted a bike, I had skates. So I did a lot of skating in urban and suburban areas, mostly sidewalks and some streets. Lots of parking lots. No brake. After college I skated a tiny bit in my 20s, and then pretty much not at all until I got my Maxxums in June (I'm 39 now). After a few easy sessions with the brake to build confidence, I pretty quickly wass up to ~10 miles per session. I did a week or two straight of such sessions every day and then work got crazy again, so for the last few weeks I've done ~10 miles twice per weekend. I also cycle and lift weights, so I've got leg strength. I would be doing longer sessions were it not for the pain of my skates digging in after 9 or 10 miles or so. I was able to push to 14 miles once but the pain (not being too tired) made me stop. I've never had any major falls and I'm going pretty fast (though there are lots of turns so I can't get going too too fast), catching and passing most cyclists pretty easily.

So I'd say I'm advanced for a casual skater. I want to do a marathon, but not to beat anyone, just to do it...

u/CyphyZ · 1 pointr/ehlersdanlos

I had the same brace you posted, and could not wear it. The art and act of getting that thing on caused more damage than going without.

I have been wearing these for years, and love them: http://www.amazon.com/Shock-Doctor-Stabilizer-Flexible-Support/dp/B005NR37NC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1416036091&sr=8-3&keywords=ankle+braces+shock

around the house if I am weak I wear these:http://www.amazon.com/Mueller-Adjustable-Ankle-Stabilizer-Black/dp/B0027VKR5S/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1416036210&sr=8-11&keywords=ankle+braces+soft

ankle braces are very personal, there is so much that can go wrong with all the small bones and ligaments of that joint that it will be trial and error. I have tried at least a dozen braces, those work well for me. And combat boots. combat boots rock.

u/rjcarr · 1 pointr/Basketball

I wear these ankle wraps as I've rolled both of my ankles quite a bit before (one pretty bad like you're describing). They limit your movement a little bit, but I've been in situations where I've rolled my ankle while wearing them, thinking it was going to be an injury, but I was totally fine. Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Zenith-Ankle-Brace-Adjustable-Support/dp/B01LYQU9K4

u/hcatch · 1 pointr/running

Thank you for the reply! I'll look up deep friction massage, and will continue moving the ankle through full range of motions. Not sure if I should be taking ibprofen regularly or just before my next attempted run, as the ankle doesn't hurt other than about 1.5 miles into my runs.

I also purchased an ankle brace. Only wore it a couple of times, but I'll start putting it on more regularly too.

u/Deulski · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

I've considered going the VH route due to lace bite and may at some point when money is less important to me. Until then I make due wearing Supremes with a "bunga" sleeve cut in half in the front of each one of my socks and skipping eyelets on my skates. For <$15 on Amazon you're silly not to try it. (https://www.amazon.com/Silipos-10845-Tubing-Ankle-Sleeve/dp/B00JFTW43I?th=1)

The bone spur hotspots you should definitely have punched out at a skate shop.

u/lukemese · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

u/danthetransman · 1 pointr/ftm

This is the one! It says it's an ankle sleeve but covers my forearm perfectly.

u/The_Melogna · 1 pointr/BabyBumps

Naps are great!

My ankle has been bothering me a lot lately (sprained it badly last October, it healed, but yay pregnancy) and I bought this brace on Amazon: Sleeve Stars Plantar Fasciitis Foot Sleeve with Ankle Brace Strap (One Size) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016F59BDU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_7nDPko7VyFxlo.

It has helped a lot for when I'm moving around/ walking or wearing less than supportive shoes! It still gets sore, but it takes a lot longer. Just thought I'd throw it out there. :)

u/sukyn00b · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

I get blisters on sides of my legs about 3" above the ankle as well. I have small feet and notice that the tongue of smaller skates are not wide enough to protect my legs from the corners of the skate boot (where the eyelets are). I even have custom skates with extra length added to the boot.

A while back I ended up using silicon pads, they work great, small enough where they are not noticeable at all.

Silipos 10845 Gel Tubing Ankle Sleeve, 3 Inch x 10 Inch (1/Bag) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JFTW43I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_KtaJDbYQEZ2R6

u/hamishthedenizen · 1 pointr/bjj

I use grappling socks to prevent mat burn. They hold your toes together a bit, but I'd wear wrestling shoes if you want real protection.

I use these from RDX. The grip is good on the soles. I did have an issue one time when the sole marked the mat during an aggressive takedown drill, but it rubs off without too much drama.

I sometimes use a pair of cheap [beach volleyball socks] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N2RUY9N/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
They're fine for ground work, but lower sole friction can be an issue on standup or when you tripod hard.

u/motherfuckintrex · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

I wear a pair of Swiftwick over-the-calf compression socks, then I put these on over the socks. I originally bought them for ankle support (I have bad ankles), but they've also done wonders for arch support, too.

u/Beaglescout15 · 1 pointr/ehlersdanlos

My favorite ankle braces are the lace up kind like this one. For hip pain, youtube a piriformis stretch. Best stretch ever.

For the record, I don't play vball. I'm a tennis player and I'm a little aggressive on the court, so I need ankle support, at the very least, for confidence. I've tried a bunch out, and these are by far the best. Definitely on the pricey side, but I love these because they are the strongest and quickest/easiest to put on out of anything I've tried. Highly recommend. Also used by Andy Murray (tennis player, among a few others)

u/leroyskagnetti · 1 pointr/rollerblading

Funny, I just got new Maxxums and am having the same issue... Intense pain on the right side. I can see a dark red imprint of the screw from the boot in my ankle. I just got these:

I use these on both ankles because my ankles are the worst. They don't seem too bulky to me. There's also the ones that are basically compression socks which are better than nothing.

I basically destroyed my ankle in my first year of play, and now almost always wear a brace. I've been trying to wean off and down onto tape the last few months but I feel super insecure because of how the break was before. If you have someone who knows how to tape, try that. Otherwise, perhaps try one of these braces?

I used this one when I first came back

I use this one now (less rigid)

I like both of them and they fit in my skates without feeling bulky at all. I still go back to the first one when the weather changes and my ankle gets super painful.
