Looks like the kind of bottles used to feed calves?

ETA: this looks like the exact one

When you go on your hospital tour (or any time before birth) ask your nurses what brand of formula they supply in the hospital. Hopefully you can use theirs the whole time but just in case you have to use yours I think it's a good idea to bring the same kind, just so you're not switching it up on baby so early (you can always change it later at home under the watch of your ped if you want). If you get the 2oz RTF like Similac, for example just know that there's usually 1 or 2 nipples for every 8 bottles. If you don't want to wash and reuse in the hospital (which I wouldn't recommend) then you'll want to bring extra disposable newborn nipples, too.

ETA - you might actually want to set up a chat with the lactation consultant for immediately postpartum. Get a feel for their agenda beforehand - if it seems like they're super militant then maybe try a different avenue, but if they seem to respect your choice to formula feed then they should actually be able to walk you through how to safely balance expressing colostrum/milk (so you don't end up engorged) with stopping production. I tried pumping every 2/3 hours for a month but never made any real amount of milk and was able to just stop cold turkey with zero evidence that I'd ever tried in the first place, but many women who actually DO produce milk will have to go slowly to "dry themselves up" - else they risk infection.

Even if your wife is planning to breastfeed, have formula on hand just in case. I'd recommend the ready-to-feed (RTF) stuff that comes in the little bottles (like this). That way you don't have to worry about your water source, or washing/sterilizing bottles. You can get individually wrapped nipples for them, too (Amazon link). One of the other commenters said you have to refrigerate the RTF formula, but that's only true once it's been opened.

If your wife *is* planning to breastfeed, i'd recommend a manual breast pump and/or a haaka in case baby has trouble latching and she wants to express milk. They have electric pumps with battery powered options, too, if you want to look into that. (in this case you'd obviously also need bottles and a way to wash/sterilize them).

Obviously diapers and wipes too. Another thing is we do so much freakin laundry, which, in the event of an extended outage, wouldn't really be possible. So more onesies and swaddles than you think you need and burp cloths/rags in case you have a spitty baby.

Some items we Amazon Primed in the first week or two that we didn't know we needed: simethicone gas drops, probiotics, vitamin d drops, velcro swaddle, different size pump flanges, slow flow nipples, saline spray/drops, miracle blanket swaddle, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Newborn babies are hard, and I hope you don't have to deal with a hurricane at the same time! Praying for calm weather in your area!

I'm a mother to a great kid who was born with a bilateral complete-complete cleft lip and palate.

You'll want to keep formula on hand, because no one knows when your milk will come in. That's the case with every baby.

Are you set up with a cleft palate clinic? If not, please do so. It's a collaboration of doctors and specialists that work together to give your child every advantage. My son's clinic has a feeding and lactation specialist that helped me with everything. "Pump lessons" are awkward, but worth it.

What I did was pump with a hospital-grade breast pump. Hospital-grade makes a world of difference when you're only pumping and not nursing. If your insurance won't cover a hospital-grade pump, Medella is the best on the market.

As per bottles: my son used these nipples. There's a disc-shaped valve that you insert into the nipple that allows your baby to get enough food. These are an absolute Godsend. GODSEND! My son never fell behind on weight, despite having three reconstructive surgeries before he was one.

You're probably sick of hearing this: Please try to pump for at least the first six weeks. Breastmilk is nothing short of amazing for your baby, and BONUS it really helps shed post-pregnancy weight.

I pumped for nine months. I want to tell you that pumping is kinda weird, not glamorous because you feel like livestock sometimes, and you have to plan your schedule around it to avoid leaky boobs. However, I would do the exact same thing again if I needed to in a heartbeat. It was worth every inconvenience of mine to give my son what was best. That being said, every Mom is different, and don't you dare let someone ever make you feel less-than for giving your baby formula because pumping makes you cringe.

We're here for you. Please feel free to PM me anytime.

But you can buy a bunch on amazon if you want to have a store of them. You have no idea how hard these were to find the first time I was looking for them, because that's ALL my kid would take for awhile... anyway, here's a link! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004TON9BK/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_GFYrDbRCG68P8

Mine looked like cones when I was done
. I went to a LC and she gave me these and they are wonderful! They keep the excess tissue back.

I saw someone bought one of those medicine pacifiers ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FNV6352/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?smid=A2UILHLLDUMCAM&psc=1 ) and put breastmilk into it and those froze it. I plan to make some of these for my babe for a cool treat this summer.

u/Emeryn · 2 pointsr/InfertilityBabies

D's the same way- he takes medicine much easier when he's calm. When he isn't, I have to use one of these to get the medicine down him. He'll suck on it like a pacifier with super reproachful eyes, but it's easier than a syringe when he's thrashing around.

Try to nap while she's sleeping? You need some rest. <3

Enfamil makes 2 oz. nursettes. It's what my hospital used for my son in the NICU. They have disposable nipples that you just screw on to the nursette, then feed. That way, you don't have to worry about washing bottles in a hospital room.

These 'disposable' nipples were recommended by our LC and worked for my son. They fit on a standard medela bottle, and you can use them several times (at least 10?).

I'm a little late to this post but I wanted to tell you that when going to the smaller sizes, they have a 22.5mm insert and a 21mm insert. I have both. The 21mm is the one that fits best but it drives me nuts, so I use the 22.5mm.

I'm currently using both sizes b/c I have two pumps so I can't send them to you, but the 22.5mm ones are super cheap so may be worth trying? Ameda has a brochure to help you find what size you need.

u/toweryogi · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

Yep - I use Bella B wipes. They have aloe and chamomile in them. I just use them to wipe before and after feeding/pumping to keep everything clean and make sure there isn't milk left behind. Not necessary, just a luxury I guess! Maybe a hangover from my mild PPA too...

ETA: I cut the wipes in half and use them each a few times. They are the size of baby wipes and you just don't need that big of a wipe for the nips!

If your nipples are on the smaller size (since they won't fit larger nipples, I actually first got these because the smallest medela flanges were still too big for me and found these in my search for smaller ones), I found these helped a lot -

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00JRYEV1E/ref=pd_aw_sbs_75_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=SZ74H83GNVW5V2ET7V6P

They fit perfectly in the size flanges that come with the medela pump, and since they're flexible I find them more comfortable than a regular flange even ignoring the nipple size issue. Maybe worth a shot, although it does add another part to clean sadly.

I know I'm a bit late but I love these ones from gerber, the fast-flow nipples are a bit longer and fit better in my mouth than the slow-flow they come with, and I like the silicone feel over the latex feel.

No worries, thanks for the info tho. Is this the one your talking about? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N4UJRD3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9NoCDb99SACDD

Gripe water. Really helps calm baby when he has an upset stomach. I've been told to combine it with gas drops, too, though I haven't gotten those yet.

Munchkin Medicator A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. We had thrush and I had to give LO sticky medicine 4x a day. With the syringe and the droppers it took about half an hour to give him his dose, along with screaming, crying, smacking, and a few times choking. Yellow sticky liquid was everywhere, no clue how much he actually took, and baby was amped up and unhappy. It sucked. I orderd these and it was a freaking miracle. I measured his dose, put it in his mouth, and within 30 seconds he had happily drained it, no mess, no crying, no choking. Not a fluke, either, he used them 4x a day for a week with the same results every time. Possibly the cheapest baby item I have bought, also the most valuable.

Some way to play lullabye music. His crib has a mobile that plays some classical music (currently used for soothing while we rock him, because lol at the thought of him sleeping in his crib.) I also use spotify to play a playlist I've made of music by the band Rockabye Baby. I like it because I can enjoy my music and sing along with songs I actually like instead of singing Rockabye Baby the song a million times. They cover all kinds of stuff, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, the Cure, Black Sabbath, Green Day, No Doubt, Blink 182, Adele, and so on. You can probably find something you will both enjoy.

Definitely extra sheets. I had two for the pack'n'play bassinet. I frantically sent my mom out to buy more after doing a million loads of laundry because in the early days blowouts happened a lot. Now I don't really need them, but I'm okay with having extra, I can use them to keep the playard cleanas he gets older and makes playing messes.

Baby bathtub. I was going to do the sink amd then a laundry basket. That idea died quickly. I found a secondhand bathtub that has a seat inside and it's up on a stand, so it keeps baby up at a reasonable height, and it doesn't take as much water as filling the whole adult bathtub. The sink was functional, but baby wasn't happy about it and would get cold super fast. Now he loves his baths.

We went through the same thing. Our son was SUPER particular about the shape of the nipple and wouldn’t take anything that wasn’t very similar to the Doc Browns. We found that the Enfamil Disposable Nipples are similar to the Doctor Brown’s. They screw onto a standard sized bottle, and worked well with these Medela Bottles .

Eventually we got tired of buying the disposables and got these Evenflo Classic. Baby immediately took them and we’ve been using these for 3 months now. Super cheap and WAY easier to clean! Hope this helps!

Well said !!

I mean the world over women mostly use pads, tampons etc .. think of all the waste prevented! Spread the word out sister.

These cups are made of silicone, similar to the material of which baby nipples are made. But the cost of it is 4 times that of nipples.

baby nipples 7$

diva cup 27$

If the demand was high enough, you could get these for 7$ too. And they would last a long time. This should be taught to women world over, advertised better.

Of course the pad/tampon/etc lobby wouldn't want this to be adopted in a big way. This a cash cow for them :(

Have you tried the Medicator Paci? They automatically suck on it and the medicine just goes right on down. Works for our LO if he needs to take Tylenol, although I'm sure this tastes worse!
