Although most people don't pay much attention to umbrellas, here are some nice features to look for:

  • 210T fabric
  • UV protection (to double up as a parasol)
  • 10 ribs
  • Steel or carbon fiber construction

Additionally, if you prefer portable umbrellas, get one with an auto-close button. It will keep you dry when entering a vehicle.

If you prefer large/ full-size umbrellas, get an inverted umbrella. They don't become a wet mess when you bring them indoors, and also close in very narrow spaces.

Also, look for a strap that is not Velcro, as Velcro isn't the most durable mechanism compared to magnets or even a button. Finally, make sure the canopy is at least 105 cm wide. Any smaller, and the umbrella won't keep you dry on a windy day.

Edit: for those who are asking, I recommend either this portable umbrella or this full size umbrella.

Geniales Konzept! Ü

Well, there’s this other one

Get a parasol! They come in so many pretty designs. If you want to have one that is double duty, sun and rain, get a UV blocker umbrella. They come in pretty designs too. Here's a regular umbrella that blocks sun https://www.amazon.com/Sun-Rain-Travel-Umbrella-Lightweight/dp/B07D6646J6

or something like these. UPF is like SPF but for fabric. UPF 50 means it blocks 99% of UVA and UVB rays so don't get confused and think it doesn't offer good protection. This is a rain umbrella too https://www.amazon.com/Nicecho-UPF-Fashion-Lace-Umbrella/dp/B00W5MOI8G/

Hidden skulls https://www.amazon.com/MINGXIN011-triple-folding-umbrella-printed-protection/dp/B013SK52QA

Or just nice shaped (I have these, they work great) https://www.amazon.com/Migobi-Folding-Flouncing-Compact-Umbrella/dp/B014HFAAEY

And I just realized I was posting tons of umbrellas. They are really awesome for blocking the sun if you get the ones that are made to block it and are rated at high levels. It is so much cooler under an umbrella like this and I can stay out in the sun so much longer.

There was nothing that I left at home that I wished I had brought with me. But there were things that I brought with me that I should have left at home. You can always buy things along the way - clothes are the easiest to buy, but if you have a favourite style/brand of underwear, that would be the only thing I would recommend you take enough of.

Minimize adapters, chargers, cords as much as you can. I found that a good power board/strip (with USB) and 3m cord came in very handy, similar to this, where you can plug in your gadgets, etc from your country, but just use one adapter. And the long cords helps in hotel rooms and apartments so you can maximise your work area.

A large collapsible umbrella. Many here I am sure would find it unnecessary, but if you are travelling for work (in tropical areas especially) and need to get places dry, a good large umbrella is worth its weight in gold. You might only use it a few times a month, but it keeps you and your things dry. Don't go for a small "travel size" one, get a large, automatic-opening one like this.

It does depend on how much you will be moving around. If you are only moving every 2-3 weeks, that would be very different to if you were moving every 2-3 days. Too much luggage is just a PITA to get to from hotels/airports, no matter who is paying for it. I used a baglike this one and started with 20kg (absolutely full!), but now I have left some things behind and it is 16kg, plus I always have a small backpack for my laptop/electronics and a change of clothes for carryon. Less is best.

The GustBuster 48" Umbrella would fit the bill nicely. Very sturdy, a handsome wooden handle, and a vented top to prevent getting turned inside out when the wind picks up. I have had one for two years now and it looks just the same as the day I bought it.

u/metaphysicalfarm · 5 pointsr/nyc

My bf just got The Gustbuster. He likes it.

u/broadbenj · 4 pointsr/bladerunner

That got me on the right track. This one is perfect, thank you!

I've bought several of these over the years and not one has ever turned inside out, even in serious wind. I've only had to buy replacements because I lose them occasionally.

u/Crowsby · 3 pointsr/Portland

I've been very happy with my Gustbuster. I've used it frequently for about three years now, and it still looks basically new.

u/savantalicious · 3 pointsr/funny

It’s usually called either UFO Raincoat or Hands Free Raincoat

This is just one example of the product. Enjoy the search!

u/Roxas-The-Nobody · 2 pointsr/pokemongo

There's this as well.

u/MadLintElf · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I picked up a Procella golf umbrella, 68 inch canopy, it has withstood 45 mph wind tunnel tests and has a lifetime warranty (make sure you register it when it arrives).

It's big but not too big I'm 6'0 and it has great UV screening as well if you're playing golf that comes in handy. Has a sleeve you can put it in and carry it over your shoulder.

Had it for almost 6 months now and it's still in great shape. Last umbrella I had was a Cutter and Buck umbrella, lasted for 7 years.

39 bucks for the procella, definitely worth it.

u/ccerulean · 2 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

If you live somewhere windy, I can not recommend the GustBuster enough. It is the best umbrella I’ve ever owned. I used it during 50 mph winds and it did not invert!

u/asdsadwqqwqw · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I bought this one after a recommendation on this subreddit. Exactly what I wanted. Have had it about a year and love it.

u/KosherNazi · 2 pointsr/GoodValue

In case anyone in the future searches for umbrellas, I just found this one for just $14, which is a historical low so I'm giving it a shot. Still would love to find a bulk source for uber cheap umbrellas....

u/xlaxplaya · 2 pointsr/nyc

STOP BUYING CRAPPY UMBRELLAS. They'll keep breaking when you really need them. I bought a GustBuster a few years ago, it's great: https://www.amazon.com/GustBuster-Classic-48-Inch-Automatic-Umbrella/dp/B000AMSCRG

They make smaller foldable ones too, and they have a lifetime warranty (though you have to mail in some shit to activate it).

Or buy another brand of durable umbrella, but for god's sake, stop buying cheap shit from Duane Reade. It just creates trash for no reason.

u/trogdor3222 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I've been using this one (in and around NYC) for about a year and it's served me well. It seems Amazon is no longer offering the navy blue one that I have, but regardless, it's devoid of any sort of logo or branding.

My only complaint is that the Velcro on the straps has worn away. I usually keep it in the sleeve though, so this is somewhat of a non-issue.

My friends in real weather places recommend this:

u/Conner233 · 1 pointr/bifl

GustBuster umberellas are much cheaper than Davek and can withstand really high winds. I'm thinking of buying one of the large ones.

  1. Blue BlueTooth It's blue and bluetooth! And happens to be the blue version of the speaker I use all the time. (frys sells it refurbished at an epic discount from time to time)

  2. Summer kids Summer dress It says summer AND it's for summer! I don't know what strawberrying summer means though...

  3. disgusting egg seperator It's food related. It's seriously weird.

  4. German Shepherd Umbrella I want to get this for my mom. It looks like a pup we had and she never buys happy things for herself.

  5. Sharon Shinn 12 Houses Series Fantasy world with magic and swords by one of my favorite authors.

  6. A spot of bother Ebook I kept meaning to put on my kindle because $1

  7. Leather Dog Collar with German Shepherd Faces Making that one easy for me! I've been eyeing that for my GSD

  8. Skull Art I just love staring at it, but have never found an excuse to get it. So I figure that counts. I tend to focus more on useful things in general.

  9. V for Vendetta Great movie, and a pretty amazing message about what can happen if a society becomes complacent.

  10. Tactical survival kit Being able to cut wood, start fire, etc will be pretty important. Never underestimate the ability to cut and carve spears.

  11. Slideboard Trainer I am trying to get back into rollerblading, but my heart is making that difficult. I've been eye one of these for a while because I could train in the house for bad health days/weather/ to find out how far I can go now and hopefully improve it without crashing out halfway through a park.

  12. Add on Betta Plants Because fish are cool

  13. Sharks! Because sharks. Is it sharks? Cuz I like sharks.

  14. Standing Wheelchair They should be cheaper because they seriously improve the health of wheelchair bound people. A sibling company to one my husband and I used to work intended to get him one through their charitable side, so this one was an easy find for me.

  15. More sharks!!! I hadn't seen this before, might be nice when I am vending. Why you gotta go make me look at stuff? LOL

  16. vanilla essential oil I use this. It is amazing. Almost like baking vanilla, warm and lovely.

  17. Fashion Plate Kit Not the exact one I had, but the same idea. It was a lot of fun, and I design and sew now so...

  18. Writers Toolbox Something to help with the inevitable writers block, to relax, and play with ideas.

  19. Super Wide angle lens I've been photo obsessing for almost a year now, and am now trying to sell some prints when I vend at fairs!

  20. Octopus TP holder Hes got 8 arms, so why not? Makes me giggle.

I'm 6ft and use this umbrella with my pushcart. It doesn't fit your description exactly but Is tall enough for me to not hit my head on it, though 6' 2" might be close.

u/mrinedible · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I really like the one you have your eye on. Got a similar one in blue for cheaper: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009GGIII/ref=oh_details_o03_s02_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Should you want to, you can buy this frame:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NALNW0N/

It has a 54 inch span, which you can cut down if necessary because it's made of fiberglass or some kind of plastic.

u/circaflex · 1 pointr/golf

I am 6 ft 3, have the clicgear 3.5+. It came with a standard holder which worked fine, I bought the adjustable holder and it added a few more inches. I never hit my head on it. I use the 68" version of this umbrella, https://www.amazon.com/G4Free-Automatic-Windproof-Waterproof-Umbrellas/dp/B01N7HM0VA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1504304724&sr=8-2&keywords=g4free+68+inch.

u/Alekseythymia · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

u/Arlunden · 1 pointr/chicago

This is the only one who will survive the apocalypse. I love this thing. Watch the video in the wind tunnel.
