Cheers, it was for my daughter's school project. She's 9 y/o. She drew up the design and designed the pseudo logic. I helped her with the wiring and python.
EDIT: Because a few people have asked for the project code etc. I've added it below.
Setup
The latest official Raspbian Buster Lite (2019-09-26) was used on an old Raspberry Pi 1a and worked perfectly out of the box for me.
I used a Veho 360 M1 Portable Capsule Speaker connected to the main audio out jack, and powered from the secondary USB power output on an old Anker Astro3 10000mAh similar to this one. It runs the setup for about 12 hours between charges. Also these battery packs have the added advantage of being chargeable while still powering any connected devices. So the diorama can stay running pretty much continuously even if you move it about and reconnect it somewhere or have it out on display where theres no main power outlets. I though this would be the most practical option for my daughters school project as they will put it on display in a main hall (Also her teacher just told me this morning that he wanted to be able to take it easily into other classrooms because it was the best project he'd ever seen in the school :D).
To configure the scripts on the RasPi, make sure to install omxplayer first. e.g.
sudo apt update && sudo apt install omxplayer
. Then once you have the script and service files in the correct locations, install it as a systemd service that runs at boot with:I think it's this one. Reviews look pretty bad though :(
Bought this at the same time I ordered my X. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00FD2AQGI/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?redirect=true&ref_=pe_527950_33920250
Fits great and I plug it in every night without looking.
I bought this one when the dot came out, albeit was 25$ then, but I think the price has risen a bit, because of the dot.
Overall though the sound quality is excellent, and it has a built in battery.

I'd really really love these speakers so I can jam out during my cross-country meets when I'm waiting to race!
I don't want to be an adult anymore.
Thanks for the contest!

i lived in a tiny camper for a while, and had only this and my phone as a sound system, and i thought it was pretty awesome. it also put up well being tossed around, transported/clanging around by bicycle. honestly, i (and everyone else) was shocked at the sound coming from this little thing. =)

Thanks for the fun contest

This one here
I think the best way to decide if a purchase is worth it is to compare it to your other options. Can you think of anything else you could buy (or a combination of things you could buy) for $130 that would make your life better than the Jambox?
For example, you could go out to dinner about 7 times, or you could buy a Jambox. Which would make you happier?
Another way to look at it - If you bought a cheaper stereo (like this Logitech speaker for $50, and spent the other $80 on something else (or just saved it), would you be happier?
For what it's worth, I think a cheaper stereo would probably serve your purposes just as well (that Logitech one I linked to is actually really nice for the price), and the extra money could be spent on something that will make you happier.

Edit: I also just took a look at it and found an AUX input in the back, but I'm still wondering if there is anything I could connect my phone wirelessly to it.
$5.00 is my guess!
I gave my parents this one a couple years ago. They seem to like it. Has a charge port for your phone.
Oh Hi Mark ! So far my spring break has consisted of taking the dog to the vet to get a tooth pulled, so I'm onto a very painful break so far lol. My goal is to deep clean the house. A different room a day. We'll see how that goes ;) Thanks for the contest!
Hero of time
foldable speakers!
Argh, forgot link... Here. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NE1TQ8E

i was thinking about getting one of those
oh, and this is the item in question!
I have a TDK Boombox.
Sounds pretty good (given it's got 6 inch drivers) and gets pretty loud.
It's got plenty of inputs too, 1/8", 1/4", USB, and RCA.
There's a newer model available with a rechargeable battery and bluetooth here but it's a bit smaller with 5.25" drivers and lacks some of the inputs.
They also have a three speaker version (this is two), as well as a smaller one shaped like a cube.
Awesome, thanks, this is really helpful. What boom box did you modify?
I'd be really happy with the modification even if the power was at 40-50%, just as long as I don't need to use alkaline batteries anymore and the battery life of LiPo is ~3+ hours at half volume.
I have two, thinking about modifying the cheaper one. Both boom boxes can run on either wall power or the D batteries. The 2 speaker model is 18V, 1666mA, 30W (http://www.amazon.com/TDK-Record-77000015402-2-Speaker-Boombox/dp/B004I44EXI). It takes 10 D batteries.
It looks like when it's running on the 10 batteries it's 15V:

I'm a complete newb and I think the batteries are in series:

The battery space isn't a perfect rectangle. The available space, without removing the spacers, is 12" wide x 2.5" deep (the height of two rows of D batteries) x 1.5" wide. If I removed the spacers, I'd have 1.75" width at the top, 1.5" width at the bottom.

I haven't tried opening it up just yet, but could do that next to get an idea of what's inside.
Thanks! The whale is a bottle opener :) Yeah track lights are a bummer, especially when you don't know how to properly light a room haha. The boom box is TDX, i purchased it from woot.com about 4 or 5 years ago.
May I present the greatest alarm clock ever made....
All the features of using your phone as an alarm, without having to use your phone as an alarm... plus an ipod dock.
lmao, I just went over to /r/camping and searched for "music"
The first thread asking for advice had the top comment reminding them to be respectful of others nearby and the top comment with a recommendation linked to this piece of shit on amazon, with 50% 5 star recommendation, dropping to 13% at 4 stars.
I rest my case.
edit: LMAO. The next thread on portable music, the top comment was "bring your own guitar and make your own" and the product recommendation below it was for this piece of shit With 35% 5 star rating dropping to 21% at 4 stars. Sometimes I'm so right it hurts.
