OK, your situation is perfect.

For starters, you want to do this right. There are 4 ways you should be monitering your progress.

Body Weight

For obvious reasons you'll want to measure and track your body weight. This scale is pretty much the gold standard for cost and precision, however if you already have a scale it's fine to stick with that. A problem many people have is weighing themselves compulsively, sometimes even 6 or 7 times per day. DON'T DO THIS, trust me. Weigh yourself...

  • Once a week

  • In the morning before consuming any drinks or food

  • After you've evacuated your bowels


    Many people on a diet will measure their progress solely based on their body weight. Often times however the scale will get stuck. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, often times your body will go through a re-composition (less fat/more muscle), which won't be reflected on the scale, however you'll notice your clothes will be more loose fitting as muscle is denser than fat, thus you'll be smaller. Buy some sort of measuring tape and take measurements...

  • once a week

  • in the morning, before eating/drinking, after evacuating bowels

  • Waist: Measure a half-inch above your belly button or at the smallest part of your waist

  • Hips: Place tape measure around the biggest part of your hips

  • Thighs: Measure around the biggest part of each thigh


    My biggest regret from my own weight loss journey is not taking pictures. Not only will it help motivate you, but posting your progress pics to r/keto will help inspire others as well. Take a picture once a week, and try to keep it as consistent as possible. Put the camera in the same place, stand in the same place, same lighting, only underwear etc.


    Go to your doctor for a blood test. INSIST on a VAP test for your cholesterol levels, not the standard (and innacurate given low trig levels) method. The frequency that you get your bloodwork rechecked is up to you, but 3 months into your keto diet seems like a good point to get it rechecked. Probably the most important marker of healthy cholesterol levels is your HDL:Triglyceride ratio (anything over 0.5 is great), and your total VLDL. Despite what you've heard, your total cholesterol level is not a useful indicator for heart health.


    OK, now onto the good stuff, your diet. This is a great place to start. It's a sample one week meal plan made by one of r/keto's very own. Try to stay under 50g of net carbs per day (net carbs = total carbohydrate count minus fiber). For starters go through your entire pantry and refrigerator and get rid of anything you shouldn't be eating on the keto diet. Pasta, candy, chips, soda, bread etc etc. If you can, donate or give it away. If not, don't use that as a reason to keep it. Just throw it away. Trust me, you don't want temptation around, especially in the first few days.

    The general philosophy of r/keto (especially with overweight/obese individuals) is to eat when you're hungry, and stop when you're full. The majority of people find this is good enough, however if you find yourself not making any progress then by all means start counting calories.

    Now it's time to go shopping. Your diet is going to consist of meats, eggs, seafood, vegetables, low-carb dairy, nuts and seeds. Cooking oils to use are butter, olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, or any animal fat (lard, beef tallow...).


    Anything goes. If you're trying to save money go for the cheaper and fattier cuts of chicken (thighs, drumsticks and wings can often be had for <$1.00 per pound).


    Don't worry about what you've heard with regard to eggs = cholesterol = heart attack. It's untrue, eat as many as you want, yolk included.


    Potatoes and corn are way too starchy to include in a ketogenic diet. Tomatoes and carrots are a bit high on the sugar side, but are fine in moderation. Always include vegetables in every meal. They're awesome, and awesome for you.

    Low-carb dairy

    Heavy cream and cheese are legit. Greek yogurt is a bit carby but fine in moderation.

    Nuts and seeds

    Almonds are many ketoers favorite snacks. If you're craving something sweet, Emerald dark chocolate or cinnamon almonds are pretty awesome, and relatively low carb.

    MUST DO's

    Watch Fat Head for free on Hulu. This movie has been a life changer for many people including myself, even though Tom Naughton is a huge fucking dildo in my opinion.

    Read Something Awful's Guide to Ketosis. Your single most valuable resource for information on a ketogenic diet (excluding r/keto of course :P).

This scale is amazing. You can step on it 4 or 5 times and it will give the same exact reading every time. I've even tested it out by stepping on it, drinking some water, and then stepping on again. Sure enough, it registered another 1/2 pound. Highly recommended!

A few common scale issues:

  1. Not putting it on an even surface.
  2. Not putting it on a hard surface.
  3. Not stepping on and off to "zero" it out before getting a reading.
  4. Using old batteries.

I got an economy priced scale from a company called Eat Smart on Amazon. It is a floor scale. Up to 400 lbs. Uses AA batteries, I wanted to make sure no weird batteries were used.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a fancier scale that syncs to my phone. Not a practical purchase for me right now though. Going basic has been enough.

Everyone slows down, and everyone experiences weight loss in 'whooshes'. 32lbs in 45 days is FAST. You can't expect to keep up a 5lb/week loss - I aim for 2lb/week and I am happy with any loss. That said, if you wanted to see if a week without sweeteners or a week of lower calories makes a difference, there's no harm - just be prepared for your body to be inconsistent when it comes to weight loss - it's pretty much trolling you.

If you have about $30 to spare, this bathroom scale is the most accurate I've owned, and has almost 5 stars on Amazon across something like 9,000 reviews. I also bought a food scale from them, and it is also quite accurate.

Just get a cheap caliper and measure yourself over time. Accuracy isn't very important -- what matters is the increase/decrease over time, which these do a fine job with.

The Etekcity scale is the Amazon's Choice scale, but there's a worrying amount of reviews saying the scale randomly shattered without being touched.

The EatSmart scale has super good reviews praising its accuracy, and a lot less reports of the thing spontaneously shattering.

I have that one as well. It's VERY accurate. I get the same weight ever time I step on it within a short time period.

A reviewer at Amazon (and myself) wondered if it was just keeping the old weight in memory. I had someone else step on it and then I tried it again. Again, same weight.

The review at amazon had a similar result.

My old scale was a Taylor scale and it would jump 1 pound in either direction (sometimes two).

It's nice to have a scale that just works. Also you can just step on it without having to tap it before hand like with other scales. Not a big deal but it's nice.

It doesn't do anything fancy like bf% or heart rate, so maybe you wanna splurge more than I did.

As for loose skin, don't fear it. It's the lesser of two evils. It also probably won't be as bad as you think. Lose steadily, moisturize your skin, stay hydrated, and gain muscle tone. If you're too upset by your loose skin, I think lace one-pieces are super sexy too!: (random one from Google)

There are two scales I can recomend:

The first is a typical bathroom scale It is quite accurate and measure lb higher than my mechanical scale day in and day out. The only iffy part is, it will remember you last weight and if you aren't more than 1lb heavier/lighter, it'll read the same. You can trick it by only putting one food on to start, let it finish, then stand on it fully to get a newly accurate reading.

The second scale is.. awesome. I was at 400+ lbs when I got that. I wanted the most accurate and solid scale I could get.

Same scale (this one), which is fairly new. And yes, I always weigh in at the bathroom, without clothes, several times. I weigh myself with clothes on afterwards to make sure I see that slight increase from clothing weight.

I do feel like my calves are slightly slimmer with less fat fold when I squat down, but to be honest I can't tell if it's because of some change or because I'm getting used to this weight.

I've searched throughout the thread and there seem to be a general agreement that a caloric deficit is needed to lose weight? I don't know how I will achieve this by adding fat onto my meals, since fat has quite amount of calories. I guess I could decrease my portions and increase the amount of fat instead but I'm having trouble feeling satisfied as is.

And someone else mentioned the water part too. I'll drink more water!

There are a few things that could be going on.

The first is that a lot of cheaper digital scales will only use two of the feet to calculate your weight instead of all four feet. What this means is that it will read your weight differently depending on how you're standing on the scale and how flat the scale is on the floor. One way you can test this is to lean significantly forward while weighing yourself, then weigh yourself by leaning significantly backward. Don't lean so far that you need to use something for support, but if it shows your weight as being significantly different depending on whether you're leaning forward or backward, it's likely the scale is only using two feet for determining your weight. If so, think about getting a scale that uses all four feet. I use this one:

It could be that the your floor is really uneven or soft, if so, try using a flat, hard floor under the scale

It could be water weight, 2-ish lbs isn't a lot at your weight, although you're showing a 3-lb difference which is on the higher side for water weight at your current weight, but not impossible, in which case, just keep tracking and don't worry about the water weight.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you're weighing yourself daily, you'll see fluctuation up and down, it's normal, just watch your long-term trends and don't worry about the day-to-day differences.

i wouldn't worry about it now. i cut weight once, and i wouldn't do it again. you're already small, so cutting even a couple pounds will suck, and you don't your first weight cut to be for a tournament (see: my performance when i cut weight as a white belt at world's, haha). i drastically underestimated the physical toll it took on me.

just go compete at a weight you know 100% sure you can make. focus on training and working on your weak spots, instead of stressing about carbs and calories and sodium. see how you do.

(also, every league/federation makes up their own weight classes, some let you weigh in the day before, some let you weigh in without the gi - no need to base your life around IBJJF classes)

if you think you want to drop a few pounds, go get a lightweight gi. you've just lost two pounds. buy an accurate scale (the ones at my gym fluctuate +/- 3 lbs, even if try within 30 seconds of last time). i own this one which is pretty cheap, and i took it with me to worlds so i could test how accurate it was to their scales. it was real close.

I'm not sure if this is quite the right place to put this, but as someone who is very into fitness, health, etc, I want to put good information out there for people to see. Your statement about not losing weight possibly due to muscle gain reminded me of a pretty important idea:

Worry less about the scale and more about the mirror and your waist/hip measurements. The scale numbers matter, but not as much as you might think.

For the BMI, I'd recommend using this calculator, which BMI with an exponent of 2.5 instead of 2.0, making it better for people of significantly above or below average height:

Here were the ideal numbers for women designed by men:

  • BMI of 18.8

  • Waist-to-hip ratio ratio of .73

  • Waist-to-chest ratio of .69

    Obviously, you have less control over bust size than you might like, but handling your waist:hip ratio and trying to eat towards the ideal BMI is going to massively increase your sex appeal, mating options, and body satisfaction. The good news is, these are averages, and as long as you are reasonably close, you are going to be somebody's ideal.

    EDIT: Just to give a concrete example of this, I like narrower/flatter hips, a smaller chest, and a bit more muscle than most men. This will lead to a small overall size and low curves, but a somewhat higher BMI due to the higher muscle density. However, most women would be very well served by tailoring their fitness regimen to approach the above numbers over time.

    You can track both your weight and your measurements pretty cheaply. Here are a couple of products on Amazon that make it very easy:

    I own both of these products and I am very satisfied with them. I'd say measure yourself in the morning after relieving yourself for the most accurate & consistent results.

    Fitness and health are both easier and harder than people make them out to be. Often we pursue ideals that are a bit wrongheaded, and it is difficult to form good habits. However, once you pick the right goals, and you establish the good habits, it gets fairly easy and very rewarding. Happy self-improvement, folks!

Take it to your doctor's office and compare (I did this and they were spot-on the same) and go from there. My weight fluctuates crazily, always has and I hate it - I would like to weigh just once a week but I have not that willpower. :)

This might sound obvious, but make sure you're using a reliable scale. The scale that I used for many, many years had a good +/- 3 lbs buffer from your actual weight, depending on how you're standing, how many times you got on and off, etc... Once I got serious about my weight loss, I got [this scale] ( off Amazon that takes consistent measurements, no amount of leaning or getting on and off a dozen times changes the measurement it gives you (believe me, I've tried!).

I bought this scale about a year and a half ago. It seems to be holding up well. It is at least consistent with a bike scale I have.

When it comes to buying a scale, accuracy isn't super important. What is important is that it is consistent. If you weigh yourself on the same scale every time, you have a consistent frame of reference.

My day 1 was last week. Sunday, I received my new digital scale, and that night I went out to play ice hockey like I normally do. I come home and right before bed, I weigh in at 235.8. I have a big cup of water next to my bed for when I wake up thirsty in the night and when I get up in the morning, so I probably drank about 16oz of water between going to bed and my morning weigh in. I urinated once in the middle of the night and once after waking up before my morning weigh in. My morning weigh in reads 230.8.

I've heard that you can lose a couple pounds in water weight overnight through sweating and exhalation, but 5lbs seems excessive. Is this just a case of my water weight being extra high from the exercise and drinking a lot of water before/during/after my hockey game that I sweat/breathed/peed out?

This slowcooker (from my kitchen wishlist) would change mine and my husbands life the most. Right now we're both in school pretty much all day (8:30am until 6pm in Sept-April) and then he works a lot of evenings. He is able to work from home a lot of the time though. Our dinners mostly consist of take-out, or cereal, or a random piece of fruit right now. We're both trying to lose weight and that's really not the way to do it. The slow cooker would allow me to actually make meals and have them ready for when we were home for dinner (my roommate is home during the day so the house wouldn't like burn down or anything) and actually let us eat real food and not Fruit Loops lol. But, it's like really expensive. This scale (from my misc. wishlist) is considerably cheaper and would still change our lives in that we would be better able to moniter our progress.

Rapid weight loss can be normal in the beginning, especially if a lot of that is water weight.

If you're wondering about tips for consistent weighing from there, it's not too complicated.

A nice scale is a good start. It doesn't need to be expensive to be good. In fact, some of the more expensive features are considered to have highly questionable accuracy (body fat measurements by the impedance method).

Eatsmart scales are known for being both cheap, accurate, and precise. A zillion people use this one. If you want a slightly more expensive upgrade, this is nice. It's more accurate and precise (I think). And you can input your gender, height, age, and approximate activity level, and it will throw your TDEE back at you when it weighs you, which is nice.

If you really want something fancy, something like the Fitbit Aria will automatically sync your weight with your phone, but it's far more expensive. There are other nice scales which upload your data automatically. I don't consider it worth it, personally.

From there, just use a consistent routine. As in, try to keep as many variables as close to constant as possible, when you're weighing. A lot of people weigh themselves naked as soon as they get up, before they eat/drink anything, just to get the most consistent measurement.

I've had this EatSmart Precision Scale for a few years now, and have been very happy with it. It's very accurate and reliable. My routine is to step on and get a reading, then step off and get a weight with just one leg resting on the scale, then step back on and get another full weight reading. That way I feel confident it's not just giving me the same number over and over without really checking, if that makes sense.

I have this one. It's decently accurate for what I want. No bells or whistles (no Bluetooth upload to my phone, no BF%, no separate profiles). I've had it for a few years and paid a bit more than the listing there (it's an older model now and there have been upgrades), but it's a good little scale and I'm happy with it.

Scales show trends, not weights. Only a doctor's balance beam scale can be really trusted to be accurate. Even so, if your digital scale shows a trend of losing 3lbs, and a doctor's scale shows 0 change...that is a truly shitty scale. If that is really what happened, buy <--that, I own one and while it may not be accurate (the doctor's scale and it may show different numbers) it is precise. Meaning if it shows you as having lost 1lb, the doctor's scale will too. I've tested that scale with calibrated weights. I know it's precise, if not accurate. When it comes to home scales, precision is more valuable than accuracy.

Part of keeping a healthy weight is having a healthy mindset about food and nutrition. Don't be scared of food. Just accept that you need to find a balance of these two things:

  1. Foods you want to eat, scheduled and portioned such that you can eat them, in quantities that are under your TDEE.
  2. Patience to stay in the state of 1 until you reach your goal weight.

    That balance isn't easy to find, but if you find it, then you'll lose and keep the weight off forever.

    edit: Note, /u/olligale, 3lbs of weight loss can be entirely due to water. I can go from 169 to 171 in a single day if I eat enough salty foods (which cause water retention in me). So...don't ever worry about the results of a single day, worry about the trend of a week or more.

There are but you'll likely have to order online. Years ago when I started I was just a bit over 350 and my scale only goes to 345, it was a great day when I saw a weight on my scale instead of an E. If you've been at it for a month since you last weighed in you'll probably be right close to dropping below 350.

Maybe get a new scale. I swear the one I have has something in it that remembers your weight and will only show that weight for a certain period of time. With other scales, I had been able to change my weight reading by shifting my weight, leaving part of my foot off the scale, going to the bathroom....etc. With the one I have now, none of that changes my weight.

I use this scale from Amazon and it hasn't failed me yet. I have a feeling that your variances are happening due to the floor, but I'd say if you're unsure, you could take something with a defined weight and weigh it the same way you weight yourself.

The 4lbs in 6 days is what we call a whoosh, and is very likely your fat loss catching up to water loss. It doesn't necessarily have to be supported by your previous week's calorie deficit as the water weight could have been masking the fat loss the whole time. It could also be muscle mass loss, but the point is that it's not unheard of to have that big of a loss over that time. My whooshes used to range from 1 lb over a night all the way to a 5lb whoosh over three nights.

Daily weighing is not for the faint of heart. The fluctuations due to water weight, waste, and so many other things will cause you to go nuts if you have an obsessive personality. I started using the Happy Scale app a few months into my journey because I'm very data oriented and realized quickly that I don't really care about the number, but rather the trends. It helped me to visualize the plateaus and adjust my strategy accordingly, but it is critical to realize that if you stick to your plan, the number on the scale is simply a number. In fact, I have always had a goal weight "range" of 5-8 lbs that I plan to stick to instead of a goal weight.
