I have a Gryphon PowerMate. It's just one volume knob, but it's one big, heavy volume knob, the way gawd intended volume knobs should be. Also, if you press it like a button, it's set up to mute all sound. And it's very sturdy, so you can really whack it when an annoying youtube ad comes on, for example.

Also, it's very flexible. I cobbled together a little script so if I press-and-hold the button, it toggles output between speakers and headphones.

Highly recommended piece of gear.

Less than $25. This type of technology isn't rocket science.

this is what you're looking for

or another idea,

Buy this modify/dremel it so you can somehow flushmount it into your desk.

You'd have to make it removable to replace battery every few months, or you could find out what voltage the battery is and hardwire from a molex connector from your PSU, cutting down the voltage using resistors to get the correct voltage to the controller to eliminate the need of a battery.

200 dollars for some shitty keyboard that has one of these already built-in? Not mechanical, not even Topre, but membrane chiclet keys...

Ughh, no thank you.

u/leadwateocean · 4 pointsr/functionalprint

On Amazon. Its a little pricier than I could have accomplished given more time, but for plug and play it'll do!

u/Tollboy · 4 pointsr/photography

I have always wanted to have something like this. I have not looked into it much honestly, but I was curious if you could not use some sort of usb jog wheel like this, and assign hot keys to the different lightroom options. That way you hold down the hot key for temperature, and then turn the wheel as desired. Do you think something like that would be possible?

u/threeio · 3 pointsr/amateurradio

I've used griffin tech power mate controllers with my sdr setup

Simple remap of the keyboard, spin nob for vfo, push down and turn for volume and click for mute in my case

Upvote for the PowerMate button which I now use for my mic button. You seem to be well on the path to specialized input device mastery.

u/2ZQQ · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Can't you buy one now separately?

This was the first response for "usb volume knob" to make sure I wasn't imagining things...

Here is a an amazon link. There's a newer bluetooth version but it has more mixed reviews.

u/Khanja · 2 pointsr/MusicBattlestations

does this do anything more than what the iGriffin Powermate does?
I'v been wanting a powermate for a while just for the big smooth knob for volume & multifunction purposes.

plug it into your comp, and it controls the volume of the comp. that simple. it can do other neat stuff too if you set it up.

u/majoroutage · 2 pointsr/htpc

There are some HTPC cases out there that have volume knobs on them. Antec Fusion and a couple Silverstone models come to mind.

Alternatively, you can just get your own knob.

u/diarh34 · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I like the volume knob. They should just leave it up to you what you want to do with the other one. Like a PowerMate

u/W1RELESS · 1 pointr/userexperience

If you are considering buying one, definitely get the wired one. I had a bluetooth one and returned it because it wasn't worth the hassle. That being said, it is nice as a wireless volume control if your computer isn't next to your bed.

I mainly use mine in Ableton Live for chopping samples. (not typically what you'd use it for, but that just goes to show you how diverse the functionality can be).

edit: The wired one is also $22 cheaper: wired power mate

u/zimmund · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Have you considered using a Powermate? it's a USB knob which allows you to adjust volume (or whatever you want).

u/Curtisbeef · 1 pointr/hardware

Just get this:

I use mine alot and love it. Software is pretty customization too.

I wasn't sure if your US or UK or somewhere else but there some examples I think should work for your purpose.

u/xodlike · 1 pointr/buildapc

There is no 'big deal'. Some people, me included, just love the:

Tactile feedback

Simple design, no extra keys, media keys, volume control. I never used any of the media keys on previous keyboards, and always thought they crowded a design of a keyboard, while offering no functionality (for me.)

The USB hub is a powered one, since the keyboard uses 2 USB cables. I use one port to get the full length of my G500 cable, and the other one with a Griffin Powermate , makes for a really convenient setup.

Only warning I'd give to potential buyers, is that if you are often using VoIP applications, make sure your keyboard is a decent distance away from your webcam/microphone. If you go silent, some VoIP applications pick up the keyboard as the only valid noise, amplifies it, etc. Drives some of my friends nuts.

u/ssmy · 1 pointr/hardware

Griffin Powermate can act as a big volume knob.

I've always wanted one, might get one soon. I think they're like $10 used if you can find one.

u/larkatarks · 1 pointr/Lightroom

I've been looking at getting this thing, the reviews suggest it would work with Premiere and stuff, so it might also work with Lightroom.

http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology-NA16029-Multimedia-Controller/dp/B003VWU2WA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450299886&sr=8-1&keywords=griffin+media+controller

But, it might not really be what you're looking for.

u/ThisFaceLeftBlank · 1 pointr/gaming

Hah! The 2 keyboards I kept were G-15's! I bought the first model, then a lightning strike killed my computer and half the LED's in the keyboard, so I got a V2. I lost a little paint from the v1- the spacebar started losing paint, but that's it.

Eventually, I took apart the v1 and soldered in new LED's - all green. Unfortunately, I ripped the ribbon cable to the LCD, a common accident with G15 disassembly. I found them VERY complicated to disassemble/assemble. They're the worst thing I've ever taken apart and successfully put back together. So many screws, so many sizes, the delicate, painfully short LCD cable, etc. Anyway, one day a friend dumped a cola into his V1, and so donated his LCD screen for my rebuild, and I finally got it all together and working again!

Sad thing is: except for the lack of a volume knob, I kind of prefer the V2. Just feels better to me. I've thought of buying a Griffin KNOB for my PC, just to have a big ole dedicated volume knob. If it were better supported, or someone had hacked it by now, I'd probably already have one.

u/SearingPhoenix · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

How about just physical knobs for a ton of different things

Yeah, that exists. I hear it's actually pretty awesome and has some good uses in AV editing and whatnot (scrub timelines in Premiere/Audition/Ableton, contact sheets in Lightroom, etc.)

There are also more specialty devices such as the Contour (Basically the same, but with programmable buttons) or 3 dimensional mice which have a niche market in CAD applications.

u/zip_000 · 1 pointr/Libraries

One thought that just occurs to me:
You could script one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology-NA16029-Multimedia-Controller/dp/B003VWU2WA

to switch between display modes, sort of how this suggests:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12329103/way-to-change-windows-7-monitors-settings-via-script

So to switch between to mirrored mode, press the button and it calls DisplaySwitch.exe /clone

To switch back to just this display, press the button and it calls DisplaySwitch.exe /internal

u/technomancy · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Same, but I've found that analog input is actually pretty nice for scrolling around on web pages. So I got one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology-NA16029-Multimedia-Controller/dp/B003VWU2WA/

u/max-it · 1 pointr/RTLSDR

Yes but this problem was not pointed out in your article that is showing a 0,50$ rotary encoder; the next effort is to find a cheap solution with an encoder with no detents. For the optical encoder in the link, it cost more than buying a PowerMate

The cheapest optical encoder i could find is this one but the minimum power supply is 5VDC and i don't know if it can be powered directly from the USB as i want to connect it to a mouse to replace the scroll wheel encoder.

u/Aquifel · 1 pointr/woweconomy

I bought one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology-NA16029-Multimedia-Controller/dp/B003VWU2WA

It was only bought partially for things like salvage crates but, damn is it useful for them. I bound the key to open the salvage crates to mousewheel up which is also what triggers when you rotate the knob. I just absent-mindedly rotate it while watching TV and, slowly make progress.

u/FFLink · 1 pointr/hotas

Something like this, but it seems expensive...

I would personally just build my own with a Pro Micro or Arduino. Would be a fun project ^^

Edit: Or this?

u/Thetomas · 1 pointr/hotas

Interesting. I saw references to UCR when I was working on getting my warthog throttle working with star citizen.

These are the ones I'm interested in (especially the Griffin one), but they don't say anything about MIDI. Do you think one might be able to be turned into a virtual joystick slider using UCR?

Edit: Actually I just realized the griffin is discontinued and sold out or overpriced most places... I guess the other one is ok too.

These sell for more than 30 dollars so there must be a ton of profit that you can get out of this. If you would please.

Thanks

u/valgrid · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

How about standalone?

Example It probably needs Windows-only software. But i saw a bluetooth controller for Mac as well. There are probably some that send the normal keys.

If you feel like building one: Instructables

(Haven't search long, there should be cheaper options).

u/cheebs_ · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

What you're wanting does make sense and it would be pretty cool if there were more keyboards out there mechanical volume control. However.. You want a smaller keyboard because you live in a small apartment? Unless your apartment is the size of a closet, surely you have a better reason than that.. Full-size keyboards are typically 10cm longer. Is your desk just very small? Perhaps you find it more comfortable? If you really want to save space fuck a ten keyless, just get a 60% and one of those USB volume knobs.

u/SurfaceDockGuy · 1 pointr/Surface

Yes it requires explicit dev support for advanced features beyond scrolling. See this guide: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/uwp/api/Windows.UI.Input.RadialController

Only a handful of apps are supported today:
http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/apps-and-windows-store/surface-dial-and-apps

As far as Microsoft stimulating developers - that tactic did not work out so well for Windows Phone so not sure how well it would work for a limited market Surface-specific branded product like this.

Support for more general devices like "3d-mice" is much broader but you don't get the fancy on-screen circular context menu. Here is one of the most popular "3d-mice" on the market for CAD:
https://www.amazon.com/3Dconnexion-3DX-700028-SpaceNavigator-3D-Mouse/dp/B000LB7G00/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1491590176&sr=8-2&keywords=3d+mouse

And if you just want a scroll/volume wheel there are much less expensive options than the Surface Dial such as:
https://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology-NA16029-Multimedia-Controller/dp/B003VWU2WA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1491667970&sr=1-1&keywords=multimedia+control+knob

Something like this? You can get 6 inputs from it: tap, rotate left, rotate right, long push, push + rotate left, push + rotate right.

What about something like the Griffin Powermate?

Separate but can be used in any setup. I used one of these with my mechanical keyboards for ages before I ended up getting a dedicated headphone amp which already has a volume knob.

u/DrFish96 · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hey guys, I want to get a volume control knob for my speakers, something like this one. The thing is, I want to control the actual volume of the speakers, not the volume from windows. Is there any potentiometer thingy that could stick in the back of my speakers? Or any diy method of doing this? I'm prepared to use a soldering iron if that's necessary.

EDIT: I found this controll knob which looks like it might do the trick, but it's quite ugly and fairly expensive for what it does, are there any better options?

Of course you COULD simply use AutoHotkey, the Mac/Linux equivalent, or this Ghetto Mod.
