The lights are on for 14 hours per day
I woke up last Monday morning and had the urge to build a gaming PC out of nowhere. I literally reached over to my phone while laying in bed at 5 AM in the morning and started ordering parts off Amazon and a couple days later here's the finished product. I had 0 PC building experience before this but thankfully Reddit and Google had all the answers I needed.

I recommend this ring light. I also do my makeup in natural lighting, in-front of my bay window in my bedroom, (weather and time permitting), but on super cloudy days or during winter hours, sometimes it isn't possible, like you said, and I use this ring light to substitute for the lack of natural light. I have 2 of the warm light shields and 2 of the white ones (white on top and bottom, warm on the sides), and use the adjustable lighting feature to substitute for natural light, and find it very effective. It doesn't get super hot, and it can light VERY low (i use this for cloudy days) to insanely bright (never have used it on it's brightest setting) based on your preferences, it's on a dial , not levels, so you can be pretty specific with it. It doesn't come with a stand, so keep that in mind, but I already had one I could use, so it didn't matter for me.
alternatively, you can get an LED (or CFL) ringlight -- popular with youtube and instagram mak,eup gurus (my girlfriend is an MUA, so I got her one of these for christmas)

For better or worse they are NZXT so you'll need a hue 2. Luckily I had one from my aer rgb fans. They are Daisy chained so they go in order and I use the "Covering Marquis" with color 1 as white and color 2 as black to get that effect.

Also, one thing that can immediately make your photos better is lighting and backdrops! I own a candle business and noticed a huge difference when I took better photos of my items.
It doesn’t have to be complicated either, i recommend using something like the marbled white shelf liner, and stopping by a thrift shop for a few cheap plates or placemats.

/u/rapsli - I've tried these fluorescent softboxes, but they don't put put a lot of light and they are front-heavy, so they have a tendency to tip over.
With a limited budget, you might want to consider a set of inexpensive LED panels.

The lights you linked are nice, but probably far more than you need for what you want to do. Do you already have a plain white wall with no extraneous light source? (windows, etc.) If so, what's in your picture is pretty simple. Basic 3 point lighting (key/fill/back) will do the trick with 2 extra dimmable lights for the background. Softboxes are nice but diffusion will work just fine. In recent years we've switched to color-shifting dimmable LED panels for pretty much everything. these lights are dirt cheap, have black barndoors, and color shift between warm/cool, tungsten/daylight, 3200k/5600k, whatever your preferred terminology is:

We have 4 of them and they're fantastic. You probably don't even need the diffusion really but old habits die hard. If I were you I'd get 3 of them plus 2 for the background and you can reproduce that look exactly. (if you already have something you can use for fill or back you can prob get away with 4.)

So I picked up a Neewer lightbox with some random LED lights for prime day. For my camera, I'm using an Olympus OMD EM-10 with a 25mm lens. So far I'm liking the results :) Tomorrow I'll practice some more with other kits

I got these lights from amazon for $18, some white paper from Walmart for .25 cents a sheet, and bought an utility light from Walmart for $8 to hang from the top of the box.
It’s not as light as I would like but it works for what I need it to do.

The Aputure 300D is on my shortlist as well. Having a 2k LED light will be super beneficial.

Easiest is to get a softbox for them. Cheapnasty is to put a white plastic bag over them.
Or if you have an extra stand, you can attach a diffusion panel.
If he's going to be making his own films (and could be serious about making scripted films) opt for a nice tripod or lighting instead of a gimbal. They will have a much longer use-life. It's not the flashiest toy in the toolbag, but he'll appreciate it in the long term.

Books on screenwriting and cinematography can be helpful, there's a book called "Save The Cat" that's a lot of people's quick-read favorite for script writing basics and outline. I also liked Robert Rodriguez's "Rebel Without A Crew" that's an enjoyable read, his story of what it took to make his movies. Pretty humbling.
Other smaller things that every filmmaker has in their toolkit would be lens cloths/ lens cleaning kit, bongo ties, extra batteries & charger for the camera, or a camera backpack can be handy.

Something like these are good for extra focus light.
I was messing around with just a night table light for back light and my phones light to take these to play around with.
First, find out if your clients will be ok with that bright ass light in the middle of their wedding ;)
I would mount it on a stand though. It's a lot less distracting. If you're running around with a light on the camera, it's going to catch people's eye and piss them off.
For the lights themselves, I would go with a Dracast LED kit for portability and they can be battery powered.

I have only had them for about six weeks, but I've been happy with them overall.
Both units feel pretty sturdy (although the built-in barn doors feel a bit weak; don't know how long those will last). They both give good light, and I like that the mounting hardware is separate from the fixture so you can attach it on any side.
Neither one has a built-in gel frame, but a few C-47's will take care of that problem right quick. :)
I would like more control over the focus of the light, but that is a necessary evil with an off-brand product.
My final verdict? Great starter pieces, especially if you pair with a large softbox or a couple spots. They probably wouldn't physically last too terribly long in a high-volume environment, but for the price..... You get the idea.

Some minor photo editing would really improve your photos. You can increase the frontal lighting, contrast, sharpness, brightness, deepness, etc. all digitally after the fact and see some drastic improvements. I use a free program called Photoscape which is a simpler, less extensive version of Photoshop, and it's pretty intuitive and user-friendly. People ask me about my photos a lot, and no one believes it's just an iPhone 5S, a tripod, some white poster board, and sometimes these lights. The magic happens with the editing on the computer.
If you're concerned about how well your product is explained, maybe go to some websites selling similar items in the same category and grab some phrases/wording/ideas from their descriptions.
Probably not worth it to promote if you're on the first page anyway, but maybe try it with a low CPC and daily budget and see what happens.

CPU: Intel i3 budget processors are getting better and better, 4 cores is plenty for gaming, and the 3.6 GHZ clock speed, although it doesn’t turbo, is still pretty good!
Mobo: Intels mid range chipset, and this one has 4 RAM slots so you could put in another 2x4 kit for a total of 16gb if you need in the future, but 8gb will be plenty for now as long as this is mostly for gaming and not a lot of programming/editing.
RAM: DDR4 RAM at the highest clock speed supported by the mobo, 2666mhz. Like I mentioned above, this could be upgraded to 16gb in the future.
GPU: 1050 ti is perfect for running games at high settings, some easier games at epic, some more difficult at a combo of medium and high, at a steady 60fps at 1080p.
Case: Good case which gets good reviews and is easy to customize as the 2 main front fans are easily visible, and it has a window and good airflow.
PSU: Solid PSU, and 450w will be plenty for this build.
Fans: 2 basic red LED fans, but feel free to get any color that you want, I just think black/red looks cool but it’s really up to you. I'd recommend an LED over a fluorescent ring light, if you can find one for a similar price.
I just bought this Neewer LED a couple weeks ago (this is the same, I think, the pink one was just cheaper at the time).
I also own (and have previously used) this fluorescent one from Interfit.
I'm still working out my video setup with the LED light (no examples posted yet) but so far I'm much happier with it. I always set a custom white balance on my camera with a grey card but with the fluorescent light the WB always seems to fluctuate in videos and in photos I'd still have to do color correction if I used a shutter speed shorter than 1/60 (annoying because I don't like to use a tripod for photos). The LED is much more true to color & doesn't seem to fluctuate in video.
Both of the lights have about the same size outer ring, but the Neewer (which is just one ring with the center empty) seems to give more flattering lighting angles. I also like it because I can actually use the flip-up screen on my camera.
How bright a light to get depends on a lot of things - what lens aperture you're using, distance from the light to you, distance from you to your background, etc. I actually dim my light to about halfway for videos because I sit about 2 feet away from it, and if I turn it all the way up with my camera settings set to the correct exposure for me, my background (another couple feet behind me) is super dark. tl;dr - get something bright but make sure it's dimmable so you can play around to get the best lighting.
Scrubbing through the video I noticed that the camera auto exposes the shot to compensate for the backlit shelves so the fix for that would be to shoot with auto-exposing off or just shoot in manual since you’re staying the same distance away from the camera. That would fix the irregular lighting but it wouldn’t fix the lighting. This would help you get more light on your face, acting as a fill light and would make a big difference in clearing out the shadows. Audio is more of a get what you pay for kinda thing. I really like the Rode SmartLav + which you can connect to your smartphone and with the Rode app you can record some pretty quality audio that is comparable to 300+ dollar lavs. Shotguns are good too but I typically use both to help match the audio on each recording devices. The smartlav is a great piece of equipment for only $75 and it doesn’t get much better than that and would completely take away the whirs and and sound annoyances. With an Iphone, not really. They do make 1 specialized flash system for smartphones, but honestly it won't be worth it. And with that in mind, a LED constant system is what I would personally recommend.
For constant on systems you have 2 main systems that are standard in the market, CFL and LED. CFL system are cheaper, but far less portable as they are made to always be plugged in like a standard lamp. They also are not dim-able. If you have too much light where you are at, your only choice is to move the light.
The other downside is these systems require big bulky CFL bulbs that can break if not stored right.

There are two examples of such systems. The second one has double the number of bulbs meaning even more light is available. But in shooting you may find this is too much light, or in some situations it could not be enough. You won't know till you buy it and set it up to see.
For LED setups, most panels are adjustable for the amount of brightness they give off, this makes them more expensive in the first place, they also typically are battery powered (AA or some via Lithium battery packs), but some of the higher end models can be ran off AC power. Dollar for Dollar you won't get as much light out of LED panels, but they are smaller, portable, and you can adjust the light to the power you need.

I’m really sorry if this is a question you have all answered time and time again, but I’m REALLY getting ready to start learning the trade and this is kind of the last detail I want to get in order.... and it’s lighting.
I live in a rather small apartment on the ground floor, and there’s a decent amount of natural light that comes through our sliding door wall. Sadly... the angle it comes in at and the time frames that it actually comes through our window (not blocked by trees) don’t give me a lot of room to work with. I was scrolling through Amazon and happened across these two lights Amazon, which looks like an okay deal. I’d like to get some cheap items to bounce the light around like some of those white foam boards, but I wanted some input from you guys to see if these are a bust/bad option. I’m mostly going to be doing filming at my desk talking at the camera as well as some clips of “POV” angles where the camera is on a tripod between myself and the desk.

Some cheap LED strips. I got the same one from Newegg, it's awesome.
Here is what I use, cost me ~$10 in materials from the dollar store. The table top tripod lights ~$20 on amazon Took about 30 minutes to build & a prior 30 to plan. bonus It also collapses flat for storage.
Lightbox construction: 4.5x foam poster boards = box, 2x poster board paper = draper, shower curtain liner = light diffuser, & tape.

I got this kit for $45 which was a total deal.. At $80, not so much unless you are also getting RGB fans..
It could be anything from frosted glass to a translucent plastic panel to some satin cloth. If you're DIYing experiment covering your LED array with different materials.
I made a photo booth setup with an ipad and a large DIY ring light with flexible LED strips wrapped with a satin-type ribbon as a diffuser. So you can use a lot of different things to good effect.

I have a NZXT Hue+. Right now has Outrun themed colors. I can easily change the colors when I feel like I need something fresh. Sometimes I just have them set to white, sometimes I change them to fit the holiday, sometimes I do different game themes, or sometimes I just set it to a color that fits my mood. The outrun color scheme is that main one I stick with though.
This is the new version of the Hue.
Edit: You can turn them off. I see so many anti-RGB elitists. One of the things I see come up often is that the lights can be annoying at certain times (though personally they haven't annoyed me at all). If you set the color to black, it's just like having no lights at all.

I'm doing not really doing corporate, more artistic, story telling for brands. I'm also planning on picking up a Aputure 672S light (and stand, gels, bounce, hair light etc) and I already have a simple sound setup with shotgun and H2n audio recorder.

The simplest and most economical solution would probably be to use an LED ring, such as in this video. You can find very inexpensive ones on places like Amazon—something like this.

Here are the lights on Neewer's site They are actually "660's". Amazon has them for a decent price right now for $149 . You don't need a DSLR with a focal lens, but it does give you full control. I have shot full sequences on the iPhone alone and had great success.

I ordered a small photo box off amazon
and a couple spotlights. It makes all the difference in the world, cost about $30 total and its big enough for about 1 - 3 or 4 figures. I use an ancient 5 megapixel digital camera (top of the line a decade ago lol) and get pretty nice pictures. You can certainly get very good pictures without spending a fortune.
