They make one for android...

Just Google "Android Endoscope"

metal studs are, in fact, a thing. They're less common in residential construction (single family homes) and more common in condos, apartment complexes, and commercial spaces (where walls are less likely to be load bearing). As far as finding out what's really behind your walls, the best way is to take a look, you could drill a smallish hole in the wall, somewhere you'll be covering with a cabinet anyway, the either look directly in or use a [boroscope](https://www.amazon.com/USB-Borescope-Endoscope-Android-Inspection/dp/B074KXB3JM/) to look in behind the walls. You should be able to see either wood studs or metal studs within 8-12 inches to one side or the other of your hole. If you do have metal studs, you can use self-drilling screws to mount to them, though I'm not sure about how that would work with large items like cabinets, I'm by no means an expert on hanging cabinets or on hanging things to metal studs.

For a right angle 18650 light, I'd recommend either the Skilhunt H03 or the Armytek Elf C2 warm. Both lights share the following:

  • Magnetic tail with tailstand

  • Warm or neutral tint

  • Around 1" head

  • Water resistant

If you're looking to see what's behind your walls, I'd suggest something completely different. Get a borescope with LEDs on the end, there's cheap ones on Amazon that work either with or without a phone and have decent reviews, as well as brand name options. The pictures won't be as good, but you can use much smaller holes and you won't have to worry about dropping something into the wall. Often you can go down into the basement and drill up between the studs instead of having to put a hole in the drywall - no patch work necessary.

I have 4 foot one. I’m going to get a cheap endoscope/borescope and use it with a magnet on the end (if it’s a metal object) or use my grabber. Hopefully this works. Thanks for the advice! Here is the endoscope

Not OP, not an electrician but doing similar stuff at my house. I would recommend:

buy a borescope off amazon, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Depstech-Semi-rigid-Inspection-Waterproof-Adjustable/dp/B00STB0EW6/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1520957443&sr=8-5&keywords=borescope+android

Watch out for switched neutrals

circuits seem to extend themselves with Knob & tube over the years. Flip the breaker off and then check every single light and test every outlet in the house to see what all is on that circuit.

I have cast iron junction boxes that are screwed to the studs, then plastered over. They were a PITA to get out without a huge mess, oscillating tool was very helpful.

I bought one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/BlueFire-Android-Endoscope-Phones-Function/dp/B013HZCYXK

It's pretty cool, and a third the price of a plumber showing up, saying "hi", and leaving. However, it has a fixed focal length.

I would start by looking at the water situation outside the house. Are the downspouts moving water to at least ten feet from the foundation? Is your soil graded away from the house? Is the soil near the house well drained? If not, adding that french drain won't hurt.

u/Grizz1389 · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073ZFC59R/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Overall it's worked but it's a PITA to get started. The App it uses is garbage and it's hit or miss if it will actually run on my phone (Pixel 2). Sometimes it freezes and I have to start the connection and everything over again. If the camera has sat for more than a week I have to recharge it before it will work. The camera will still turn on and it will connect to my phone, but it won't send any video.

Over all I'm pretty disappointed, I was hoping for something that was a little less hassle to use. It seems like I spend more time futzing with the thing to get it working than I do actually using it.

u/EntrepreFreak · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Yup. Take the vent cover off, stick your camera (phone on selfie stick?) into the duct and snap a picture. The flash will light up as much of the duct run as it can and you'll see if there is a dead animal, old food, or something else in the duct.

You can also call an HVAC company or buy [one of these] small $15 cameras for your own phone. Check deeper than you may be able to see.

Previous hoarder may have all kinds of things in the vents. Old socks. Old fish. Old wife, etc...

Multiple ways, depending on the shot.

Stick a camera on a tube down the burrow. Like this:
https://www.amazon.com/BlueFire-Android-Endoscope-Phones-Function/dp/B013HZCYXK

Some times the animal is put in a specially made cage like a fish aquarium, so the animal thinks it's in a burrow but it's really in a giant glass cage and a normal camera can film from the outside.

Or even hidden cameras in a artificial den that's made to look like a real den.

u/nondescriptzombie · 2 pointsr/MechanicAdvice

You may notice plastic debris, but if you do hot oil changes you might not. The plus side of springs is that they don't really wear out (when you get good ones).

You might be able to pop off a valve cover and stick a cheap USB bore scope in there and give it a look.

u/phishook · 2 pointsr/HomeNetworking

I have this one:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013HZCYXK/

I have used it many times to inspect walls and ceilings before drilling fireblocks or cutting drywall.

I tape it to fishtape or fiberglass sticks and snake it where I need it. The only issue I have is the light on this one isn't as good as I wanted..But it's OK. I just use a well placed flashlight when I really need good light.

u/Firearm_Nut · 2 pointsr/Weakendgunnit

I could keep myself busy with it for a while. I also want one of these.

I just ordered this yesterday and I am waiting for it to arrive. From the reviews it sounds like people like how it functions. I liked this over others because the company claims it is stiffer than the others and it has blue led's so image you receive is not overblown.

That's a retractable grabber.. about your best shot to pull it out of the booster, but unless you have a endoscope/borescope it's gonna be hard to find.. and a standalone bore scope is outrageous... heres one for your phone.. these two together is your best shot to get it back out.. but is it worth the headache? Or extra tools to get it out. I'm all about extra tools if I'll be able to use them again in the future

Probably a leak in the plumbing behind the wall. Not good. Best to get in there and figure out whats up before the problem gets worse. You can get a cheap USB scope and might be able to get it in to take a look at what's going on first without having to demo the whole wall.

u/AcidRayn666 · 2 pointsr/f150

id say go for the lower miles. get a car fax. get under it for awhile (when i buy used im under the truck for an hour or two) just looking. leaks, cracks, rust whatever. bring a flash light and an inspection mirror. i now bring a bore scope. push it down into the frame. cheap on amazon. hooks up to your smart phone.

power washing can hide alot. cant hide mud and muck in side a box frame, pull wheels off and look at the brakes.
get a cheap obd II scan tool, pc one is what i have. plug it in, read what it says.

I would just keep an eye on it and do a little inspection one a year or so. Or right after a rainy period and see if you see any moisture behind the insulation. Also if you have an Android phone pick up one of these. For the price they work amazingly well. The stock app sucks though, I downloaded "otg view" and it works perfect.

Mine measured in at over 32 feet. Here's a picture of my picnic table at about 8 feet, and here's a picture of my grill at about 13 feet away. Not great, but you can see what's going on. Here's a picture from about 2-3 feet away. Think it would work for what you need, but ultimately you're the only one who truly knows your use case. It's this one, but you'll find near identical listings all over the place. I'd just choose whichever one was cheapest.

u/LarsAlereon · 1 pointr/homeowners

Here's the one I got with a 32 foot cable, currently $22.99. It may not be the best or the best value, at the time I got it there was a coupon that made it cheaper.

u/Ahnteis · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Get something like this: https://smile.amazon.com/BlueFire-Semi-rigid-Waterproof-Resolutions-Inspection/dp/B075K836FX/r

Drill a hole (or use the one where the railing pulled out) and figure out what's going on in there.

u/controlmypad · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Pulling ethernet cable will be easier without an RJ45 end on it, so you may invest in a crimper set, but you can buy pre-crimped cables and only cut one side off to save you from having to do both. Most all of the holes have likely already been drilled in your stud out to the doorbell location and have room in each hole to string a CAT cable through there. So then it comes down to trying to minimize the number of access holes you cut. You typically need one hole per stud bay, but sometimes you can get lucky and poke the cable through a stud bay and avoid needing another hole there, if the holes are inline and you just get lucky.

You might invest in a cheap phone borescope, and some fiberglass "fiberglass rods".

You can buy/borrow a snake camera like this:

Maybe that will help you determine where that pipe goes? Otherwise there are PVC leak kits that are better than flex seal:

Good luck!

Pull the lid off? You mean to the septic? I bought a newly remodeled house and the septic is a little hard to get to, assuming that’s what you’re talking about. I think it’s legally supposed to be easily accessible.

You know if there is usually a filter between the toilet and the drain into the septic?

Just put an order in for this...hopefully it will help.

That is bad. That means your expensive cold air is being pissed into the wind. No telling how much extra you are paying during the summer to air condition the outdoors.

Might be worth doing some investigation, to see if you can seal up the leaks from inside. Maybe with something like this?:

If you actually dropped the clip down the ports, that motor is going to need a rebuild. Here's a cheap endoscope you can get that hooks up directly to your phone. You'll need to take a look to see what's really going on.

At this point, you have two options (on the assumption that the clip is in there and doing damage). You can either get yourself a junkyard 5.3 and swap it out (definitely the cheapest option), or undertake a rebuild.

N.B. Let this be a lesson to anyone else reading that isn't already aware. Always plug your ports when working on a motor. I use shop towels, works pretty good and doesn't leave behind a lot of fibers. If you don't, it could easily cost you your entire motor.

u/PuterPro · 1 pointr/CR10

You don't need a mechanic, you need a Priest. Ritual exorcism. Holy water and all that, lots of smelly incense.

OK. Golden rule in Computer troubleshooting - If the problem is repeatable, it's software. If it's random, bad hardware.

At this point I'm sorta thinking electronics.

  1. Bad Z switch (I got a spare in my parts kit with the printer) change it.

  2. Loose wire. Those JST connectors (small white ones used everywhere) are notorious for getting a connector pushed back into the plug housing when plugged in. Connects, but intermittently. Check the Z switch plug on both ends (open the control box) with an Eye loupe and pull each wire with tweezers, see if they move.

  3. Same on the Z motors.

That's all I got for now, still pondering, but the wires are a real possibility, I had one on a fan in my control box.

EDIT: I have one of these, very handy. Can actually discern layer adhesion. Used it twice to save a print by counting layers printed and editing the G Code to restart the print at that point.

Or just buy one of these and do it yourself!

u/tehboogieman · 1 pointr/MechanicAdvice

Can't say it sounds much different, but possibly a lack of power between 2,000-3,000 rpm and then there's a power surge above 3,000. I only drove about 15 miles total today, with short trips making up the first half of those 15. The trip back home was a straight shot at highway speeds.

As for fire, whatever is up there, I'm guessing twigs, leaves or seeds/shells. It smells like burning wood or leaves rather than plastic, oil or rubber.

Maybe I can run a scope like this one.

My first goal is to diagnose it properly, I don't really want to go too far based on my assumption without confirmation. I'm not getting a CEL or any codes from a scan tool which is why I'm assuming any issue is after emissions sensors. Should I check for a blockage using a vacuum gauge?

Take a video of it yourself and go to your next village meeting and show the video. See if the meeting is posted online or if transcripts are available. Get a copy of the meeting. Make sure your insurance company receives a copy too cause they will sue the city when you get a backup and put in for an insurance claim
