I'd wear it in a way that is hidden though, as there have been stories of people getting fired for it, and the TSA's official stance is that they are not needed or allowed. Which begs the question: what are they afraid of?

When I worked with a sports med doc and we did minimal fracture cases, I didn't because we didn't use fluoro as much...but I switched to a new job that's mostly trauma and foot/ankle where we use TONS of it. So I bought some glasses.

I have these that I got on amazon - I like them because they're not super heavy and bulky on my face. They were about $100 cheaper when I bought them though...

First the good news: You're not sitting still in a constant field since you're driving through it and you get moderate shielding from your cab.

Now the bad news: This isn't a medical x-ray it's a security X-ray used to penetrate metal, so it has a higher MeV than a normal x-ray. The TSA, the wonderful branch of government that they are, will not release any information concerning their x-ray equipment nor allow independent testing so nobody knows how high these things are really cranked up.

If it becomes a constant thing of passing through the scanners I would look into getting documentation of your exposure and start carrying a personal dosimeter to get a ballpark of what your dose is. Documentation wise, just anything that says, "Yes, driver X drove through a scanner."

For the dosimeter you can buy some fairly cheap wallet dosimeters on amazon. These are good for ballparking at best, but can be included in your medical records as a means to indicate potential precursors to cancer. There are others that you can reset yourself and reuse, but after a certain amount of time they are unreliable.

If I was getting X-rayed more than once a week I would ask my company to sign up for a dosimetry monitoring program. They will provide you with a more accurate film badge and cycle them out every quarter and give you quarterly dose reports and the documentation of exposure will be from an accredited monitoring program.

The X-Rays mostly come out from INSIDE the "dome" on the top of the vacuum tube, in the shape very similar to a half opened umbrella. Not much comes out the top - they're VERY soft X-Rays at 25kV, so VERY HARMFUL TO ORGANIC stuff because your body WILL absorb MOST of the X-Rays.

THIS ENTIRE PROJECT IS DANGEROUS:

It will kill you from the 30,000 volt power source.

It will give you cancer from the X-Rays (ionising radiation tears DNA apart).

If you don't have a Geiger counter and lead shielding, as well as high voltage experience, you're best bet is learn about radiation and HV and do little experiments weeks before you try something like this. I have had MOST success with the following (NOT SHOWN: the results.)

Canon 7D Mk 2, ISO 5000, F1.8, 20 second exposure using the 50mm £50 prime lens AT FULLY OPEN APERTURE.

Pre focus it on the screen using some newspaper or something laying ON the phosphor sheet to focus on.

Turn on "Manual focusing", set up the camera to those settings, turn off all the lights HIDE all your LED's in the room, they WILL light up the screen. (I left an orange power LED on and my screen looks pink!)

Turn on the X-Ray machine! Press the shutter, exit the room. Run back in and turn off X-Rays.

BOOM! Picture.

X-Rays make CUMULATIVE DNA damage - all the doses are added together even days apart, so be careful!

Here's two exposures UNEDITED - in Photoshop the noise can be reduced, and the green phosphor turned to blue, like the standard X-Ray sheets.

The X-Ray sheets online are black and clear - and the plastic sheet they're on is tinted blue because back then they thought the blue increased contrast to the eye - it doesn't.

If you turn the image black and white, fiddle with the contrast, and then colorise the image to Cyan..... you'll get the same X-Ray result!

The sheets from X-Ray cassettes are AWESOME. Plastic phosphor layer, and a BLACK back layer - the light you see isn't leaking from the blue light of the tube, it's only from the phosphor lighting from X-Rays.

(I used a paper card version for those first images, so they didn't benefit from this contrast increase)

Well, I don't know all of the variants used.
I do know some old ones, some standard issue ones, and some advanced ones.

The tags used for pets are around the size of a grain of rice. Doubt you have one of those.
Check your jacket and try to make your room use less consistent.

Audio bugs could be used on your phone by taking control of your microphone. Yes, hidden services could use your location, they track the 'cells' your phone connects to every time you change areas or use it. A competent, well-equipped group could track your phone if it was off or in airplane mode. Take the battery out, or remove the GPS temporarily. Some people go as far as to disconnect their cameras and microphones when not using.
Though, these are tech savvy people. The easiest method is the occasional use and burner.

Someone could install a small brick thing under your car, like what the FBI used to use.
A mechanic or trained eye would most likely notice. They were pathetically clunky in the day, but must be better, now that 'the internet of things' is beginning.

The best source of information, by far in this decade, is obviously a cell.
Most people are dependent on their phones.

The simple solution is to leave the item at home, if you're concerned, or, once again, get a throw away [burner].

I don't want to encourage unnecessary paranoia.

I've got a couple of these and like them. They are above your price range, but were the lowest cost ones I felt comfortable purchasing. I've owned mine for nearly 2 years and haven't had a problem with them. I've even tested them extensively shooting them with dental x-ray systems to ensure they were accurately reporting.

I'm not any sort of expert on personal dosimeters, any recommendation I'd make would be based on the same googling you'd be doing. Honestly at that price point if you were otherwise happy with it I'd just buy another one. Only problem I see with it is a pretty low gamma energy detection range that tops out at 1.25MeV, but if you're just interested in knowing when you've entered a general increase in background it's fine.

The Thermo Mk2 EPDs we use at work are very robust but they may be more than you're looking to spend. I've always been curious about the ultra compact smartphone adapter detectors, maybe check those out? https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Radiation-Personal-Detector-Smartphone/dp/B00VVL3YH8 for example

Well, if the material is just zinc sulfide, then it won't be radioactive. The problem is that I have no idea what it is, so I can't be sure. If you have the funds, you can buy a geiger counter for around 100$ to be sure. Here is a good and cheap one.

I'm in California where our two largest concerns (mine, anyway) are earthquakes and fire.

For earthquakes it's standard preparation stuff because aspects of grid can shut down for short or long periods of time. There's also the "get out of the house now!" type situation which is really just shoes and a flashlight, or just your human body. If your bag is downstairs and you're upstairs you're not going to run to a bugout bag first. It's just get out (depending on the quake, the building, etc).

I do have a bugout bag primarily for fire evacuation, which has:

  • Important docs. Homeowners policy, our will, healthcare directives, passports, social security cards, etc.
  • A printed road map of the state (thin book).
  • A kickass little am/fm radio.
  • A handheld 2m radio programmed with area repeaters, I have a mag antenna in my truck.
  • Geiger counter. Way over the top for people to have but I bought one so where else would I put it.
  • 4 way water key.
  • Spare credit cards, some cash.
  • Medications we need.
  • USB chargers.

    I also have a google spreadsheet printed out that has the items we want to take. The evacuation orders can come at any time and you might be knee deep in some project or sick on the couch, you need to be able to mindlessly grab items that a smarter-you considered bringing. The bag is just the one that we're really screwed if we don't have. This is my list, it's taped under my desk at home.

    Edit: also, there's a column for different family members. My kids have stuff they're supposed to grab (a change of clothes, etc) while mine has the chainsaw and a shovel.

    It's possible you'll have less than 20 seconds to escape your home but chances are you'll have at least a few minutes, maybe even a few hours. Having a list of things to grab from the house thought out in advance seems reasonable to me. And some stuff that's super useful (like dumping everything from the medicine cabinet into a bag) is more of an instruction than an item, per say.

1 mSv/h is a very high dose, we are talking the Three-Mile Island incident here or 15 chest X-rays in a row.

Can't trust a third party, so buy a uranium ore sample, a 3.5mm to USB cable, and a Geiger counter with a 3.5mm out, then use that to get you some random ass numbers. I'm sure someone's written a program for that that takes the Geiger counter as input. Oh you may also want to fracture the ore sample in a semi-random way, and then use that instead of just the standard sample, just cause.

Total price, 450$, ish.

(disclaimer, I don't know shit about Geiger Counters or getting them to feed data into a computer)

Do you happen to know anything about these RADEX brand counters? I'm guessing the Ludlum 14c is way more accurate but these RADEX ones are tempting because they seem more portable and at least slightly cheaper assuming I buy it new.

You really don't want to risk something gimmicky for this. I'm also in the market for a radon detector, and I'm thinking of something like this one: https://www.amazon.com/RADEX-Advanced-Radiation-Detector-Software/dp/B00DAITFOG/

Minute-by-minute smartphone updates isn't something remotely useful for a radon detector, but being able to upload the data to a computer is, so I can have graphs of data over time.

I'm a little hesitant to make full on recommendations but it's possible that these measurements have already been done. Generally, x-ray devices are registered with the State. Depending on where you are it's possible there's already a report on file.

In any case, dental x-rays, even panos, are pretty low power/low dose. And a GM isn't the best device to measure exposure due to the low energies and short duration of beam engagement.

That device says it does integrated dose rate measurements but I would caution that what it will very likely be reading is going to be natural background radiation. If you really wanted to do some long term monitoring you may want to look at film badges, and have one at a work station and one in a control area away from sources.

You could also just see if the GM responds while the beam is engaged I suppose, but dose rates from dental x-rays to the patient are on the order of 0.005 mSv. The dose to someone a few meters away will be very close to 0.

Not trying to talk you out of it, just don't know that a low cost GM is going to give you great info on x-ray doses.

I assume mine works. It does have a test patch on the case. And does measure. But I do not have a Gama radiation generator to test with. But if I really needed one they can be found on amazon.
