Have you tried a chew tag necklace. I haven’t had to deal with it.. but I know they make things for kids who like to chew on things.

Look up "sensory seeking behaviors". Does he do any of those other things? If yes, then I'd consider talking to a pediatrician about getting him evaluated for possible sensory processing issues. If not, then I'd just get him some chew-safe items and keep a very close eye out to ensure he doesn't have access to dangerous nonfood items he is tempted to eat when left alone.

In terms of specific items: my autistic preschooler is an extreme, extreme sensory seeker who chews nonstop and will eat pretty much literally anything, and these necklaces have been a) fulfilling, and b) safe for her. She has had some of them for several months and has not managed to chew through them yet.

My youngest has one that looks like dog tags that we call his "chewey"... I've seen the lego looking ones as well. I think they are all on amazon as well.

Edit: This is what we got from amazon

I got a four pack of the crystal shapes.

I like a gummier silicone texture best but this material is nice too and much sturdier. Plus it is meant to be chewed so it is safer.

It's still marketed towards kids, but I got this leaf shaped one (https://www.amazon.com/Sensory-Oral-Motor-Chewelry-Necklace/dp/B0738YHCTY/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=1OVSU7CFFWE8A&keywords=leaf+chew+necklace&qid=1554309593&s=gateway&sprefix=leaf+chew+n&sr=8-3) and it's got nice little ridges for texture. It's also not like, super kiddy like some of the animal ones if you want more than a smooth stone style.

They do some special texture ones too :) here’s a good example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01DSXD1GU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_zf0YAbJ8218AB

I have Betron earphones and I love them so much because they block out the noise and the sound doesn’t leak at all, even at higher volumes :D

Something like this. I was recommended it by another Amazon member. It was very helpful :O. If I ever splurge...

I have a chew necklace! It's the blue stick kind from Amazon. I highly suggest trying it, since it's helped me very much. From anxiety to migraines, my necklace in my mouth soothes :) Try it!!

u/curiouskitten007 · 2 pointsr/Anxiety

I just saw this article on Buzzfeed (lol) about pieces of jewelry to help with anxiety.

ARK's Krypto-Bite XT Chewable Gem Necklace Chewelry (Extra Tough, Teal) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S00WLFY/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awd_x_sj3ZxbXTNYHBW

Check this out. Although the maybe kind of odd in theory, it could divert the nail chewy to a harmless piece you gnaw on? I don't know I thought it was kind of a smart idea.

I looked back on my Amazon orders and found the one I got for my son.. he was toddler age, so it stood up! (Hopefully the same quality now!) It's cute - looks like a swirl candy.. there are plenty of others, and styles if you search around. This is the only one I can personally vouch for. Hope it helps!! https://www.amazon.com/Disc-Pendant-Gremlin-Necklace-Sensory/dp/B00KCPH8BW

I have one, here are my thoughts:

If you like small spaces, it's nice to just chill in sometimes.

Air circulation inside is less than optimal. Breathing is fine, but the air gets stale. I work around this by having a fan blowing in my direction.

*It feels awesome and there are unlimited ways to use it. Some positions don't give lots of deep pressure, some do.

That list isn't exhaustive, but should give you an idea. They're relatively cheap, so I would recommend getting one, especially if you like your heavy blanket. This is the one I have: http://www.amazon.com/Abilitations-Dynamic-Movement-BodySox-X-Large/dp/B0042SR680/ref=pd_sim_328_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=31mJWDWTk%2BL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=045EV56SZJKB28AJ2E0H

These are both on my radar to try out!

I like weighted blankets, but often I like my legs to be free, and sometimes my arms. So a weighted vest seems a good idea to me.

I am leaning towards buying a sort-of weighted apron: "The Hug w/ Minky Cover" prototype from Huglife (I hope it takes off, as I'd love to see it in different color, fabric, and weight options - it's marketed as a general deep pressure comforter rather than to ASD in particular, so might be too light for my preference). Also expensive!:

https://www.shophuglife.com/

Alternative similar product "The Relaxer" is a bit cheaper and customizable in weight albeit still lacking the range of designs/fabrics that weighted blanket suppliers can offer:

https://www.therapro.com/The-Relaxer.html

My motivation for a weighted toy is that I enjoy the pressure sensation of my cat lying on me, but that's only on her agenda, so a weighted toy I can use any time. I also am considering a weighted cushion, as then she could just sit on it as well - I worry about her feeling left out if her spot is replaced with a toy, she already sits happily atop a large square feather cushion (not-weighted). The issue with weighted toys is they are often marketed at kids so they might not be weighty enough for me! I quite like the idea of a weighted turtle, such as these:

https://sistersensory.com.au/product/weighted-turtle-3/

https://www.sensoryoasisforkids.com.au/shop/sensory/deep-pressure/weighted-turtle/

I quite like this turtle shaped blanket (sadly much too light)

https://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Shaped-Weighted-Blanket-4lb/dp/B013PUXI8C

With the prices of weighted products, I wish I had developed a special interest in needlecraft!

Give him something to distract him from his tantrums.

You could try incentivizing it, or (with Dad’s permission) just flat out give it to him. Another option is to say that he can use it while he participated in scouts (but can’t take it home).

I’m not a doctor, or anything of that sort. I’m not trying to dismiss or diagnose anything. I’m just trying to think outside the cube... box on this one.

Another option, for the dad to buy, might be a weighted jacket (eg like this ). My wife and I got both our boys weighted blankets for at home, and at least for my oldest it seems to work really well when he gets super worked up. And he has not been diagnosed on the spectrum.

It’s at least worth discussing with dad. What’s important here is the boy’s well being and trying to find ways to get him to calm down.

If you remember, please update us. I’d love to know if anyone’s suggestions helped in anyway.

PACK OF 3 Chew Tube Clip-On Spiral Keychains Autism, ADHD, Sensory, Special Needs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N2GUQ1F/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9RH4AbAXKV56T
These have gotten a lot of use from my 2.5m nephew who has autism and is a big sensory seeker!

u/thejoycircuit · 1 pointr/TwoXADHD

I can't comment on what might be causing it, but as a chronic teeth grinder who has to wear a mouth guard, I ended up buying some "sensory" "chew" necklaces for use during the day. These look pretty non-descript, and holding it in my teeth keeps me from clenching down:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N996VZ0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They come in a lot of styles and colors, and are pretty cheap. When I am working at home at my desk (alone) I use one of the ones below, which are a couple of inches across:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XS4L6NK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1

I sometimes feel like a small child, but it keeps me from grinding and the various textures are fun.

This sounds like my 6 year old who has some sensory processing issues. She was in OT for a while and one thing they used on her was a velcro vest which could be put on her and tightened so that it felt almost like being hugged. We did not get one for home or school since her teacher would have to remove it every 30 minutes or so and put it back on after a similar time frame. It is something similar to this product.

Bear hugs also work, but that is really a very temporary thing.

I’m so glad you’re doing this for people. My 7 y/o has sensory issues and is being evaluated for autism and chews on literally everything and I want to get these chew necklaces for him but don’t have any funds at the moment.
If you can’t do it, it’s completely cool. If you can, message me and I’ll give you my address. I’m in Florida. I’m just glad you’re doing this for people. Thank you so much for helping someone out. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DXM357C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OUZxDbE76SHG4
